The blog for books and movies

Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:

Break into the notorious Ice Court
(a military stronghold that has never been breached)

Retrieve a hostage
(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)

Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.

I expected the Six of Crows hype to be true, but this is great! Everything about this book was great:

Storyline, characters, world-building, writing. It’s hard to imagine Six of Crows receiving critical reviews from readers. Backed by the most unique crew imaginable, Kaz Brekker’s never-ending storyline unfolds into one of the most entertaining and original stories I’ve ever read.

Six of crows is a fantasy novel that follows a group of criminals who band together with one objective: pulling off an impossible heist. With each characters perspective brought to life, you truly come to understand and empathise with each person. These anti heroes become the villains you love, hoping they get away with their crime. While Leigh Bardugo’s writing can be a bit slow to read, the plot is incredible a long with the beautiful world building. This book can be read with no pretext, however I would recommend the Shadow and bone series before hand as it allows a better understanding of the Grisha Verse world.

  3. A classic! I got into this series/universe early last year and I haven’t been the same since. As the first book in this duology (but not of the series), it made a brilliant first impression with an interesting take on each character. The multiple perspectives were generally well written, though sometimes it was hard to follow. The next book was even worse with this. My favourite part of Six of Crows was the relationships the characters were developing and already had with one another. Diving in, I already knew a bit about the series, but I think it’s easy to follow (until the Ice Court heist) if you don’t know much. Speaking of which, the Ice Court was almost impossible to understand, and while I value the map provided and appreciate the time and effort, it did little to help. However, moving past that, Leigh Bardugo finishes the book with unresolved issues (that will be resolved in the next book) and as I read that next book, I realised some clever links. Bardugo definitely planned ahead, and for that, I would absolutely recommend this book, and, more specifically, this series, to anyone.

This book is my favourite book ever, it’s so SO good! If follows a gang and group of outcasts in Ketterdam who call themselves the ‘crows’ and go on a heist for a large sum of money. This book has absolutely everything, there’s action, mystery, suspense, romance, with super high stakes, and so much going on throughout every chapter! My favourite character would definitely have to be Kaz, because he’s one of the most intelligent and clever and cunning characters I have ever read about. BUT all the other characters are honestly all so amazing too – one of the things I love most about this book is that all the characters are so diverse and multi-dimensional, and have amazing backstories that eventually fall in love with every single one of them. Plus their character developments are amazing! I would read this book a hundred times if I could, and would definitely reccommend this book to anyone above the age of 12 who likes fantasy books!

  5. This book was AMAZING! My favourite character was for sure Inej, i loved how strong she was and she always put family first. Family to Inej was not necessarily people related to her but friends too which I loved because you don’t have to be related to be family. I especially loved Inej and Kaz together because he did everything for her even when it became difficult. Inej helped him overcome his challenges and he made her stronger for it. I also loved Mathias, Jesper, Nina and Wylan because they didn’t care about each others backgrounds and religions. This book is 5/5 and i would recommend it to anyone that loves fantasy books.

Six of Crows is an thrilling, fantasy book about a group of dangerous outcasts who go on a deadly heist that, if they succeed, could make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. The book follows Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, Matthias, and Wylan, who all bring something different to the mission that could be the difference between success and failure. I love how each character is different, and they all have their own backgrounds and unique talents! It’s such a good book and whenever I picked it up, it was hard for me to put it down. It had so many twists and turns that made it such an exciting read! It’s a part of the Grishaverse and takes place 2 years after the events of the Shadow and Bone trilogy.
I would highly recommend this book for people who love fantasy and heists. 10/10!!!

  7. I can’t recommend this book enough! This is a young-adult fantasy series based in the Grishaverse, a world full of wars, kingdoms and Grisha, those who posses the power to manipulate certain elements. There are 3 orders, Coraplaki, Materialki and Etherealki. This book follows the events and world setting of the Shadow and Bone series, so I recommend reading the first book first so you can understand the terminology, tie ins and how the Grishaverse works to get the full experience and beauty of Six of Crows. This book follows six main characters, Nina, Jasper, Wylan, Matthias, Inej and our fave criminal Kaz Brekker. These 6 characters come from all walks of life to come together to pull of one impossible heist. Everyone thinks that they will fail. They think they will fail. But this books takes you on an unforgettable journey of finding self love, respect, courage and sacrifice. Each character, goes through their own incredible struggles but in the end come together for laughs, banter and crime for the greater good, (Kaz might disagree ;)) I absolutely adore this book and highly recommend to anyone interested in fantasy. 100/10!!!!! The only thing I didn’t like was how amazing Leigh Bardugo is for creating this masterpiece!!!!!!!! Plus it’s now a newly released show on Netflix called Shadow and Bone that stems a bit from the books just to include our favourite crows, a huge plus I’d say. I believe this is suitable for mature high school readers and above of course! Some themes of gore, fights, drug addiction, crime, religion.

I cannot recommend this book series highly enough! Taking place in a rich fantasy setting, this novel combines the unusual combination of magic, crime and romance (which develops further in the second book) to create an epic story. More so than anything, what I really love about this book the most are the diverse and three-dimensional characters that are seemingly lumped together to form great relationships. These aren’t your typical heroes – they reside in the moral “grey zone” and can definitely be questionable. However, this allows so much character development and these flaws make them even more likeable. One character that definitely grew was Matthias, who learns to overcome his hate due to his sheltered upbringing and find his true love. The group dynamics and banter provided a lot of humour and was one of my main causes for really enjoying this book. Overall, I definitely suggest giving it a read!

  9. SIX OF CROWS BY LEIGH BARDUGO is fantasy novel about an impossible heist. There are 6 diverse characters who are Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa, Nina Zenik, Jesper Fahey, Matthias Helvar, and Wylan Van Eck. Kaz is the leader of the gang. He is known for being cruel and being crippled. He is always underestimated but that doesn’t stop him from succeeding in his schemes. Inej is his spy and is known as ‘The Wraith’. She is small but is definitely not fragile. Nina is a heartrender. She has the power to kill someone as easy as a flick of her wrist because of her magical ability. Jesper is the sharpshooter and has the best aim out of everyone. Matthias is the ex convict who is thirsty for revenge. Lastly, Wylan is the runaway who had a privileged past. But although he had all the privilege he needed, he still didn’t have a great family life. The impossible heist begins to achieve all the riches they wish. This book has great representation of people of colour, the disabled, the LGBT community, sex workers and religious elements. This is one of my favourite books because the story was so interesting and the humour had me cackling. This storyline was so unique and the dynamics between all the characters really just had my heart to the fullest. 98% from me and 100% recommendation.
