The blog for books and movies

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and deliver them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule-but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her-even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she’s always known.

    I love this book.
This book is about Luna. Luna was born in a sorrowful town where they leave a baby out in the woods for the witch. That year Luna was the child. Unknown to the sorrowful town, a different sort of witch (Xan) comes and takes the children, and takes care of them, before giving them to another family. This time, Xan accidentally gave baby Luna a drink from the moon instead of the stars on the journey back to her house. The moonlight enmagics Luna. When Luna’s magic starts to emerge, Xan locks it deep inside of her, only to emerge when she turns 13, and can understand the power and beauty of magic. When Luna comes to her 13th birthday, her magic begins to emerge. Although, Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the sorrowful town is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Sadly the bad witch has entered the forest too, and the man can’t seem to tell who is good and who is bad. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her. Can she do it?????
I loved reading this book. Although, I must admit that at first I was a bit hesitant, because I’m not really a fantasy or sci-f reader. But, this book is extremely exciting, and despite Luna being the main character, a lot of the other characters are discovering constantly and learning about themselves and those around them. They are constantly forming new opinions, and changing their point of view. This book was thoroughly enjoyable, and exciting. I would recommend this book even for adults.
I recommend this book for ages 10+ (but can go all the way to adults).
I give this book an 8.8/10.

  2. The girl who drank the moon, by Kelly Barnhill: For all those people who would like to see a whole new verdant and enticing world unfurl before their very eyes.

My poetic take on the story:
    There is no suspicion
    If there is no division
These people are deprived of knowledge
A lie they don’t even acknowledge
For what is a world with witches and dragons
If all that it brings is a world that blackens.

    blurb:
The girl is special, she drank the moon, she is a girl sacrificed to a witch, whom they say is evil enough to destroy them all. A carefully constructed community built on lies, must break through the blanket of sorrow that crushes them all, because it is the very thing that keeps the monarchy afloat. A witch, a dragon, a monster, who all work together to contain her power, must now work to set it free. She is the child of a witch and a monster but who is her true family? Luna goes on a mission but discovers that it may lead her to something more, her true family. Luna discovers that there is more to her confused village, and on a voyage with dragons, magic, wizards and volcanoes, that she may be capable of much more than she originally thought.

My take on the story, how it made me feel.
The girl who drank the moon, is written with such a bewitching plot that you won’t be able to stifle the compulsion to keep on reading. The book is a must read, Kelly Barnhill, weaves words together so well that you instantly get caught in the flow of the story. I was reading along and was so swept away by the story that I didn’t realise that I had chewed through half of the book. Kelly Barnhil has created such a creative and contrasting world to what you read about in your everyday fantasy book. This is a book I will never forget, and is probably one I will cherish and re-read to the end of my days. I highly recommend you read this book, even my parents read it!!.

  3. I really recommend a book called “the girl who drank the moon” by Kelly Barnhill, it is a wonderful sci-fi book, about a little girl who lives in a sorrowful town and gets found by a which who accidentally feeds her moonlight which makes a normal child magical, She befriends a dragon and a bog who help her to find where she came from and how here mysterious mother came to find magic from the corners of the earth, this is by far my favourite book and I would definitely recommend it.
