The blog for books and movies

There are many types of battle in Afghanistan. Imagine living in a country where women and girls are not allowed to leave the house without a man. Imagine having to wear clothes that cover every part of your body, including your face. This is the life of Parvana, a young girl growing up in Afghanistan under the control of an extreme religious military group.

When soldiers burst into her home and drag her father off to prison, Parvana is forced to take responsibility for her whole family, dressing as a boy to make a living in the marketplace of Kabul, risking her life in the dangerous and volatile city.

Pavana is such a great book to learn what it is like being a girl that to fit in has to be a boy. it really shows how differently Men and Women get treated which is quite unfair and very cruel.
I recommend this book to people 12+.

  2. Pavana is an inspiring book that shows an inside to the struggles and the lifestyle of a third world country where women and girls differ because they aren’t men. Under the eyes of the Taliban controlling their every move; declaring that women can’t work and punishing people who don’t abide their rules, Parvana risks her life to help her family after a devastating realisation of the world she lives in. This book is no fantasy tale but what it is, is a story of a girl who fights. I recommend this book to anyone who likes an inspiring story.

  3. The book Parvana really inspired me to be strong and brave. I LOVE this book because it really is descriptive and it makes you feel like you are actually in this book. Like you are Parvana. I would definantly recommend this book to those who are going through war or have experienced it. An age rating for me would be about 13+. My favourite part of the book is when Parvana and mother go to the jail and try to save father. That was very brave of them despite the outcome.

Pavana is an inspiring book and lovely to read. It is about a girl named Pavana who lives in Afghanistan with her mum, dad, older sister, younger sister and younger brother. Her family struggles to even keep themselves fed and healthy, everyday Pavana and her father would go out to the market to sell the things that they don’t need anymore so they can earn some money to buy food for the rest of the family. One day after Pavana and her father had been out in the market and they had just had dinner, the Taliban barged into her house and found that her father had books that they did not like and took him away. Now that her father is gone there is no one to look after the family so somehow Pavana and her family have to come up with a way no make money for food. The woman are not aloud to go outside without a man because of the Taliban. This is a great book to read and keeps you on your feet, I would definitely recommend if you like a very inspirational story.

The book is about a girl and she is living in Afghanistan and it shows the struggles of people living over there and the families living in those types of countries.

This book has more then 1 and it is great! they have a different problem and this that are bad for women in Afghanistan. It goes through the rules along the way and shows you have much girls are limited to and what to do. But of course Parvana does not follow by those rules and she is a very courageous girl.
I love this book and I can’t wait to read ones like it.
I recommend this to people who like reading about true storyies and people that sad but thrilling books

This story is a story of hope and the hardship of a young girl caring for her family against the Taliban. It’s a story that will make you cry and think about how lucky we are to live in such a lucky country. Even though it’s not a true story I’m sure many people out there in Afghanistan are in the same situation as Parvana was in the book. I defiantly rate this book 4 stars out of 5, and believe me if you love sad, heart-wrenching books this will be the one for you.

  11. Parvana is one nail-biting book! I really enjoyed reading this book about the story of Parvana. Parvana is a story of a girl who is undercover as a boy who strives to protect and feed her family under the rules of the Taliban Government. It is truly scary when you can picture Parvana speaking to a real life Taliban soldier when she is undercover as a boy. Parvana just waits until someone find out or sees that she is a girl. My favoutite character in this book was mainly Parvana herself as she is so brave and shows so much courage in so many different ways. I can relate to Parvana when she is scared. I really liked this book and I would recommend it for girls who are 10 years old and over. 10 out of 10!!!! 🙂

    Week 1:
Parvana is such a great book so far. This week I was Word Puzzler. For being Word Puzzler I had to make a word puzzle. The word puzzle that I made was a crossword. I feel lucky for what I own and that I am able to have friends and socialize with other people. At the start the book was a bit boring but I forced myself to keep on reading. When it came to the end of what I had to read for the week, I couldn’t take my eyes of the book. I think it would be very difficult to live under the Taliban there are so many rules it isn’t far for everyone that lives under the Taliban government. If there was no thing as the Taliban Government Afghanistan would be at peace but unfortunately there is the taliban government in Afghanistan. I can’t wait to read more into Parvana! This book has such a great flow so far and I am hoping that it will become even more interesting.
    Week 2:
This week in Parvana was really good I really enjoyed it. I was Text Selector. For being Text Selector I had to find 5 quotes in the book and what page number it was on. I feel so lucky that I don’t have to dress up as a boy to go outside to get everything for my family and for my family to always rely on me, personally I wouldn’t like my family to always rely on me. Something good about Parvana’s life so far is that she is always with her family, she loves, cares and cherishes her family. She always is spending time with them, everyone in Parvana’s family knows each other better than themselves. The most horrid thing about Parvana’s life is that the Taliban can do anything thing they want to do, they take away family members for no real reason and that puts families into depression. With what we read this week we got introduced to a new character named Mrs. Weera. I can’t wait to find out what is going to happen in the next 39 pages or so in the book for the coming week I can’t wait! Hopefully through this next week Parvana gets more interesting because I am absolutely am loving this book it has to be one of the best books I have read this year so far! Can’t wait to read more of Parvana.
    Week 3:
This week I was web builder. This task was very easy and fun to do. This week in Parvana was very interesting. At the end of chapter 11 I got scared. In the chapters that we read for this week we got introduced to a new character named Shauzia. When Shauzia came along she put some more character into the book which was really good, I hope that she doesn’t disappear during the rest of the book it would be really upsetting. I am happy that Parvana found one of her old friends and that they stay good friends for a very long time. Somethings that really scared me was when they went to dig up the graves for money and Parvana didn’t really know where she was and also when they eventually got enough money to buy the trays with straps to go around their neck and they went to the satdium and they thought that it was going to be a soccer match but it actually wasn’t it was something where all the men go and some men get their arms cut off. Hopefully in the rest of the book there is a nice and happy ending.
    Week 4:
This week I was Discussion Director. This week the book was great I loved the ending it is making want to read the Parvana’s Journey, the 2nd book from Parvana. What I found very happy for Parvana and her family was when her father came back home. Parvana’s dad doesn’t know why they let him go and why they even arrested him in the first place. What made me scared and sad was when Parvana found the girl that is hiding in a room without head covering. When Parvana got her out of the dark room and took her back to Parvana’s house the girl started to talk. One thing that the girl said was that she left Mazar because the Taliban came to every door step and killed everyone, even the girls family. Parvana got scared because that’s where Fatima, Nooria and Parvana’s Bother and Sister. Parvana and her dad set off to Mazar to rescue Fatima, Nooria and Parvana’s Bother and Sister. What I hope will happen in the next book is that Parvana and her family will arrive back safely to Kabul, they live a nice life, The Taliban will be gone and that in 20 years time in spring Parvana and Shauzia meet up in France.

My thought of what the ending was going to be sort of happened so I was really proud of that because it means that I followed and predict the story well which is good.I really didnt like the ending because parvanas family just disappeared and you don’t know what happened to them and it just ends. I really liked that her father came back to her so that she wasn’t alone for the rest of the book but I don’t understand how and why her father got out of jail, because in our days here they don’t just let people out of jail especially if they just sit out of jail because they cant walk.I also really liked that the two people brought him home because not many people would go out of there way to help some one get home. Besides that I really loved the book and I really want to read parvana journey.

Parvana was a really gripping story that makes you want to take a stand against the Taliban! I found the last few chapters really gripping and the last page made you want to read the next book in the series, Parvana’s Journey. The story was all about courage and trying to stand up for yourself in dangerous situations, and the book really gave you a wake up call and makes you appreciate everything that you have so much more than you used to. It’s about trying to survive in a dangerous and awful environment and being that desperate to survive that you would do anything. Parvana as a character is brave and courageous, a girl dressing up as a boy, to earn money for their family while her father was in jail. She has a kind and caring personality, but also has a bit of bite in her too, which makes the book much easier to read than having a main character with a curl-up-in-a-ball-and-lie-there-for-eternity person! All in all, I really enjoyed reading Parvana and I can’t wait till I can read the sequel, Parvana’s Journey!

Parvana is an amazing book full of excitement but extremely sad and horrifying moments. I felt an emotion in almost every single chapter that i read. It is a story about a girl named Parvana and her family who went through many troubles through their lives and were to live under many rules as well as all others that lived in Afghanistan. Parvana lost family members throughout the book and some of then returned. The family finds it hard to cope through life having their father away. Considering he was the only one who could do the shopping (only men could shop in Afghanistan) the family made a clever but terrible decision to make life a bit easier for them. Parvana and her friend Shauzia do many things throughout the book that help the family with money problems but one in particular is really shocking. I would recommend this book for people that are at least 10+ because of the violence with the Taliban and because some things in this book are hard to understand. I felt during this book that I was really in the scene and I could feel the emotions that she as feeling and I was scared for her when some pretty horrible things happened. Lots of surprising things happen throughout this great book but I must say get out the tissue box because it at times can be quite sad.

The book shows her struggles to make a life for herself and her family under the harsh rule of the Taliban. The Taliban are very mean and very strict. 1 thing that does happen in the book is that the Taliban go into her home and her father is taken away by soldiers and taken him to jail. What will happen next to Pavana. Will she survive the World of Afghanistan. I would rate this book a 9/10.

I read this book in year 7 for lit circles, I am so glad I got giving this book as it is probably the best book I have every read. This book shows how unfortunate it is to live in Afghanistan where women have no rights what so ever. It truly is amazing to see how one brave young girl, on a fight to survive in Afghanistan, can also save her whole families life. My favourite character is defiantly Parvana, all throughout this book she show great courage and hope even in the toughest situations. My favourite part of this book is when Parvana showed huge courage and dressed up as a boy in order to survive in the tough conditions. The saddest part in the book is when Parvana’s Dad gets arrested by the Taliban and taken away. It is a truly amazing book about one girls courage and hope to survive. I really recommend this book to everyone! It is a sad book but a really good read. I give it a 10 out of 10- It is truly amazing!

  34. I really liked Parvana It is a great book and really shows how other people in Afghanistan are so much less fortunate then us. How could you just start to imagine turing into a boy, cutting off all your hair and seeing some very explicit things. My favourite part of the book would have been when Parvana helped her mother go to try and get her father out of prison and walking all that time and then being beaten and told to get out of here that i thought was just terrible. My favourite character would have to be Parvana because she helped her family go through very hard times in their lives but sacrificed her own life for her family which shows how much she loves and cares for them.I think that it would be really hard for some people to turn into a boy and especially cut all of your hair off but i think that if it was for my and your own family then that is the only thing that matters trying to get your family through rough times just like Parvana did. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read short books with harsh and very bad conditions of what it is like somewhere other than your life in Australia.

Along her journey she finds a life long friend, who is also doing the same. I would never be able to do that. This book keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out more. This book is about a girl called Parvana who lives in Afghanistan fighting for a feminine point of view… I love this book, it just goes to show how brave some people can be even if they don’t have the luxuries that we do. This book is a great book for people who like to read about unfortunate situations. I would rate this book 10/10 because of the way the Parvana talks about her life.

  58. I learnt so much just from reading this book. From her experiences, the cultural side of the book and how they treat women in Afghanistan.

Parvana has had such a difficult life. Having your dad being taken away from you would be horrible. I can’t even imagine how she felt. She was beaten up for trying to set her dad free and had to dress up as a boy and cut all of her hair off so she could get food and make money for her family to survive.

We think our lives are hard having to go to high school, having homework and things we NEED to do.
Some people don’t even get the chance to learn and go to school.

This book is truly amazing and you’ll learn so much from it, I know I did. You’ll love it.

  60. If i had of never read Parvana i would not know about the stress, heart-ache and pain all the children, families and parents go through, during time at war. Parvana is written by Deborah Ellis, who wewnt around to Concentration camps in areas around Pakistan and Afghanistan and interviewed Mothers living in the camps about the horrors and trouble of their Journey to get this far. Parvana is a young girl who lives in the Afghanistan capital, she has one dream to run away to France and live there forever. There she would be away from the war. But it isnt that easy. She once was a happy young girl at school with all her friends like every girl at shc but when the war came her life would never be the same. She and her family have to fight for survival but things never get easier they just get harder. Pavana is a young girl who fights for survival. All girls living in war zones are heroes and survivers!

She and Parvana find them selves digging up bones, selling things on trays and witnessing cruel things like peoples arms being cut off. In Afghanistan, women are not allowed to go outside without men, and the soldiers catch you, you can get taken to the jail. Parvana was just sitting in her little house with her mum, dad and two sisters when her door swings open and the soilders searched her house and took her father away. I am not going to say anything more you will have to reads it for yourself. i think that you should read it! 🙂 😀

  64. Parvana is a book about a young girl in her teenage years. She lives with her mum, dad and two sisters. Parvana is put at risk when her father is taken away by the soldiers.
This story is set in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, there is this rule that if you’re a girl and not with your father, husband or brother, and the soldiers catch you, you can get taken to the jail. Parvana was just sitting in her little house with her mum, dad and two sisters when her door swings open and the soilders searched her house and took her father away.

Parvana and the family had no Idea what happened. Everyday things where flowing through their minds. Parvana didn’t know what was going to happen, as they did not have another boy in the family. So the mother asked for one of the girls to dress like a boy. They all said no.

Parvana’s mum didn’t know what to do so she just put her foot down and told Parvana she looked like a boy so she would have to shave her hair off. Parvana wasn’t too happy about the situation, but she just did it for the family.

Everyday, Parvana took off with her little bag and went to the market, where her dad used to work. Parvana was looking around, making sure people wouldn’t notice she was a girl. She had a clothe around her head. She sold a few things everyday and would go to the fruit stalls and buy some fruit for the family.

Recommendation: This is the best book I have ever read. It tells the true story of a girl in another culture, and how she lives. It is suitable for year 7 and above.

They are to remain shut inside or if they want to go out they need a note from a male giving “permission”. All the windows in houses must be painted black so no one can see the women and if they do go out they are likely to be attacked by Taliban.
Parvana’s life is completely changed when her father is arrested and there is no man left to take care of her mother and sisters. With no other option, Parvana dresses up as a boy and provides for the family in the same way her father did.

  79. Parvana is a young girl living under the hard conditions of the Taliban in Afghanistan. When her father is forced to leave she becomes the breadwinner of the family. She is forced to become a boy so she can work and earn money for the family. Whilst she does this she somehow stays true to herself and in the end believes she can to it. In english we had to write the next chapter for an assessment task and it just showed how well written the story was. Love the point of view that it’s from. Reccommend to all!!!

  80. Parvana is a great and interesting read. The style in which it is written is easy to read but still interesting. The story line is quite gripping and you really fall in love with the main character and can feel all her pain.
Parvana goes through many hardships with them all starting because she is a girl living in Afghanistan. Her family has it okay considering what other families are going through. All of this changes when Parvana’s father is taken off to jail for going to school in England. Her family quickly runs out of food because only the man is allowed out of the house by himself. No one is able to go outside because they are all girls and need a male to get out. Parvana’s mother and her good friend come up with a plan. To turn Parvana into a BOY!!! Well make her look like one at least.
I definitely recommend this book to read.

“Parvana” is a very informative book and I recommend it to people who don’t know much about Afghanistan so they know the kind of horrors that girls around our age are facing in the world. Parvana ends a bit suddenly which is why it is great that there are two more books after it. Give it a try. It is a very easy read with only about two hundred pages and fairly large print. Even people who don’t consider themselves “big readers” are sure to enjoy this.
