The blog for books and movies

Halley has always been close to her mother, a therapist who publishes books about adolescent behavior. But the summer before her junior year of high school, Halley begins cutting the umbilical cord. She and her best friend, Scarlett, start hanging out with Ginny Tabor (”a cheerleader with a wild streak a mile wide and a reputation among the football team for more than her cheers and famous midair splits”); Halley dumps her nerdy boyfriend (the son of her mother’s best friend) and becomes involved with reckless Macon, a boy her parents have forbidden her to see.

Then Scarlett discovers she is pregnant two months after her boyfriend Michael is killed in a motorcycle accident. Walking a line between childhood and adulthood, the two girls turn to each other instead of their families for support. Together they explore the meaning of love, sex and responsibility.

  1. Where to start? What to say? My emotions towards Someone Like you, are ecstatic. I absolutely loved the book, everything about it was utterly brilliant! My love towards this book grow every single second I read it. The ending was alright.. I loved how they left the most exciting part till last and they really emphasised the ending to make it enjoyable and easy to understand. The disappointing part was when the Author didn’t tell or explain to us what happens to the baby after it was born and what happens to it, it kind of just let us hanging. But I didn’t hate the ending, I loved it more than anything. The happiness coming from Scarlett made me smile, but it also made me feel bad for her, when the baby was being delivered, and she didn’t have her mum by her side. I want to read more Sarah Dessen books, they make me happy and smile, I encourage everyone to read them, it was amazing!

  3. Someone Like You! I have just read this book for Lit circles and i just love it. It is about two friends and their stories of their teenage years. This book has not only just romance, but shows how true friendship can last through tough times. It ranges from true love to break-ups, teenage pregnancy and car crashes. Sarah Dessen has written this book for great enjoyment but it also sends out good messages. With every turn of the page i just didn’t want to put it down, i just had to know what happened next. This book brought me from laughter to tears. I recommend this book to girls 12+ and rate it a good 9/10!

  4. I have really really really REALLY enjoyed Someone like you because it really tells a story of friendship and what has the possibility to tear it apart. Sarah Dessen really tells a tale of what being 16 and pregnant is like, and losing your boyfriend while being pregnant. I must admit, the ending was quite predictable, but I still enjoyed it. I wish I hadn’t read the book so fast because it was really good and very funny. There are parts in the book when you wish you could grab Halley and Scarlett and knock some sense into them!!! My favourite part of the book was when Halley looked back to the good memories she had and realised that maybe she should listen to people around her a bit more. I rate this book a 7/10 and recommend it for 13+ 🙂

  5. This book is a fantastic example of true friendship. I read this book for Literature Circles and I really enjoyed it. Best friends Halley and Scarlett are always there for each other. Scarlett has always been the confident and outgoing one while quiet Halley has always been known as “Scarlett’s friend Halley”, Although as the book goes on it seems as if these roles are swapped between the two girls. There are lots of examples of how strong this friendship really is throughout the book and how Halley and Scarlett are always there for each other.

  6. I love every moment in this book! I couldn’t put the book down the whole time i was reading!!!! Different parts in this book i was able to relate to, like how close me and my best friend are and how we have our fights and people come between us, but because we are so close (almost like sisters) we always find our way back to each other (: I read this whole book in 1 afternoon because i loved it so much! sometimes i wish my life was that exciting, but i would never want to be pregnant that young! I really loved how close Scarlett and Ginny are! This book, although it might not look like it, sends a message about life and how hard it can be if you don’t take precautions and it highlights many situations that can happen in a teenagers life. I really enjoyed reading this book and i would happily read it again! I rate this book a 9 1/2 /10 and i recommend this book for girls 12 and up (: x

  7. Wow! What a fantastic book to read! I have loved everything about it.
This book really takes you to another place where you can be in another world. One where you can really proceed on a journey with the characters. Taking a little while to start, the book really picks up about a third of the way in. Everything starts happening, new relationships, Scarlett’s pregnancy and over all their everyday ordinary life as a teenager, but somehow is is different.
Without fail each page I read of this book made it hard to put down. It was hard to connect with the characters at times because the things that happen to them are not my reality but thats what I liked most about the book. It opened my eyes to what some people a few years older than me do. Drinking, driving, dealing with a pregnancy and relationships with various people they are involved with.
The end of this book really delivered a shocking surprise. I would never have though that the book would end like this! I loved it! I loved how the author, Sarah Dessen, wrote the end of the book, with the accident, the prom and the birth of baby Grace Halley Thomas. What an honour it would be to have your best friends baby to be named after you as well!
This book highlights some important factors and situations of being a teenager. It creates an awareness and whilst you are reading it makes you think about the consequences of your actions and lets you imagine what it would be like to be in the position of the characters. This is what I enjoyed. Being able to put my self in the characters shoes and imagine what life would be like if I were them!
I would highly recommend others reading this book! It was absolutely fantastic and I hope there is a sequel!

  8. WOW! This book was really great! I can now say it would be one of my favourites. I do have to say that it was really hard to get into the book at the star, but when i got into it i loved it. At the end i was really surprised and shocked at what happened, because I didn’t see it coming and it left me with my mouth hanging and in the shape of an O. This book was eye opening as well, with what happened shows us how important safe sex is, and how we need to make hard decisions and not be forced into anything that you don’t want to do because you are your individual person and can make decisions for yourself. Someone like you is a book that is about teenagers who have to make big decisions and they have to really think and be careful of how they do the things that they were attempting. So al together this book is talking about how important things are and we have to be responsible with these sort of decisions we have to make once in our lifetime. But i loved this book and i would advise anyone to read it to get a insight of what can happen and what does happen in life!

  9. After a LIT Circles presentation:

Let’s get one thing straight, this book deserves more acknowledgement then you guys have probably given it during this presentation. LIT circles to us before reading this book has always been the last period of a Wednesday where we can just talk and chill out. BUT, while reading “Someone like You,” we have started to open how eyes to the world of consequences and the rewards of our young, and normally poorly judged, teenage behavior.

Scarlett’s boyfriend dies at the beginning of the book which left us kind of shocked from the get go. Then about a quarter in we learn that Scarlett is pregnant. If I could show you the reaction our group had you would laugh your socks off. We would of too, if this book hadn’t of been so intriguing. For about 3 seconds we would of had a reaction, then straight away we would have been concentrating on the book again.

Some amazing people made these statements:
“The section we read this week just gives you more to think about. This story isn’t one of those stories with no twist. In fact this book is so much like reality that you just want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I would love to put more of how we felt when reading “Someone like you”, But I can’t because you are just going to have to read it to find out.” Says Leana.
“Iwould defiantly recommend it to anyone who like a book that they can relate to and that actually wants to read a book with modern issues.” Says Brigid.

Summarizing what we thought about this book has been tough. It’s been tough just trying to express how deep this book has reached us. If I had enough money I would buy each of you “Someone like You”. But, because I don’t you will just have to take it from us that this book ROCKS!!! 😀

There are so many different emotions in this book and so many different little personal stories inside of one. it is really interesting and full of fun. i highly recommend this book and would give it a nine out of 10. I love this book because of all of the different characters and how they all fit together even though none of them really have the same personality traits. Read it, you won’t want to put it down.

  19. I recommend Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. To be honest i was not really intreged by the first few pages of this book, but i stuck at it becuase it was on the top 10 unmissable reads from the LINC. I kept reading and true to its word, it deserved to be on that list.
Scarlett and Haley are best friends but disaster strikes Scarlett and Haley needs to support Scarlett like she has always supported her. This book takes readers on an unforgettable journey of choices and rebellousness (if that is a word.) These two girls learn to be strong for one another through many difficult decisions.
For a truley satisfying and wonderful read, do not pass up this book.
