The blog for books and movies

Matilda is an extraordinarily gifted four-year-old whose parents, a crass, dishonest used-car dealer and a self-centered, blowsy bingo addict, regard her as “nothing more than a scab.”

Life with her beastly parents is bearable only because Matilda teaches herself to read, finds the public library, and discovers literature.

Also, Matilda loves using her lively intelligence to perpetrate daring acts of revenge on her father.

This pastime she further develops when she enrolls in Crunchem Hall Primary School, whose headmistress, MissTrunchbull, is “a fierce tyrannical monster . . . .”

I loved reading this book, it was a book that was recommend to me a few years ago. Which was great because, I actually really enjoyed reading it. It is a book that you can read at any age in your childhood from 8-15 and beyond most likely. I think everyone would really enjoy it. As I did, it is a simple and an easy read. But at the same time still very interesting and fun! It is a great book to read if you are looking for a chapter book that is not to long but still a decent amount to read at the age you are. The story is a about a young girl named Matilda, she is adopted and family and dumb people who are not very nice to her. They don’t let her go to school till later than a child should. She turns out to be very very smart and always had, as she had to look after her self at a young age! It is a great story, it has its high and low moments. I would definitely recommend it!

The novel, Matilda, by Roald Dahl will forever be a childhood classic. There are many life lessons amongst this book, and thats why I think it is a perfect book to grow up with. It is about a little girl named Matilda, who is an extremely smart young girl. However, she certainly does not fit in with her family, who only care about money, food and television. She ends up going to school for the first time, which of course was a very exciting thing for her. She shocks Ms Honey and her classmates with her smartness and matureness, especially for someone who has never been to school! However, the issue is the evil and mean principle, Ms Trunchball, constantly bullies her students, so Ms Honey and Matilda try to get back on her by playing little games. This is a book that could be enjoyed by all ages and i rate it a 9/10; I could read this over and over!

Matilda is such a good kid’s novel to read for fun. I love the way that it was based and Setout. Matilda is very easy-going and determined to do the right thing, even though she has a family that is not a very good influence on her. This book got me hooked and I had so many thoughts and opinions on this novel.

Matilda was a very empowering and inspirational book to read. My favourite character would have to be Miss Honey since she is so kind, caring and respectful towards everyone. I love how she took the effort to make sure everyone’s okay and how she took care of Matilda very nicely. My favourite part of this book would be when Matilda proves to Miss Honey that she has superpowers, this part made me happy that she finally gets to prove how talented she is to others. This book shows how fun and important it is to read and learn new things, it also shows that you should be kind to others even if you don’t know them that well. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves Roald Dhal books and a magical storyline. I would give it a 8.5/10!

I read Matilda by Roald Dahl. This book is a classic and you’ll never regret reading it! Filled with laughter, fun and cheekiness. I certainly didn’t enjoy the character Harry Wormwood. As he didn’t treat Matilda as a real person, just because she was a child! I would recommend this book towards young kids, to show them they can be and do anything without anyone stopping you!

  7. Matilda! What a classic. A girl with magical powers from young age figures out how to use them to stand up to her family that don’t like who very much. That girls name is Matilda. Her whole life ever since she was born she felt useless, she felt like her family didn’t care. She started making pancakes at the age of 5! The funny thing about Matilda is she loves reading and uses her powers when she doesn’t need too. Everyday after her mother went to the lottery she would walk to the library with a little trolley and borrow a tun load of books. While her mother was at the lottery, her father and brother go to the family owned business of car dealership. The only thing about that is that all the car parts are stolen and the cops are out to get him. I’ve read and watched this movie over 10 times and can’t get enough of it. This is a type of story you will never get over. I recommend this movie to any age 6+ as it is enjoyable for everyone. I rate this book a 10/10 and higher if I could.

  9. Matilda by Roald Dahl is such a heartwarming but unpredictable book. It is about a girl named Matilda and the twists and turns in her life including her evil principle and mean parents. This is a must read as it is so amazing to read. The movie is also amazing as it follows the storyline of the book nearly perfectly and the actors portray their characters greatly. This Movie and Book are such great pass-time things to watch/read. Totally recommend.

  10. Ahh Matilda, such a classic from the one and only Roald Dahl. I have read this book about 10 times and I still can’t get enough of it. The book is about a young girl named Matilda and all she wants to do is go to a school and learn but there’s just one problem…her family don’t really raise her in a so-called ‘learning environment’ as for the Wormwoods a happy evening revolves around watching tv while eating junk food. However, one the other hand for Matilda it’s reading and studying! Throughout this beautiful book you will see how Matilda overcomes her challenges and obstacles by being her own person and embracing an appropriate approach for her learning and fellow peers.

Matilda grows up to love books but from a young age. She is known as a bookworm, Matilda also loves attending school and loves her teacher Miss Honey. I believe throughout the story Matilda portrays the message of ‘you are not alone’ as she goes through some hardships but then she discovers she is not alone and she has many supportive people around her to look after her.

It would have to be one of the best books by Roald Dahl. Another thing is that mostly when you read a book and then watch the movie they are completely different but these two aren’t that much different. I love how they turned it into a movie because it just makes it all more real and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to ages 8-12 because one you get over 13 you don’t want to read those types of books whereas if you are below 8 then you won’t be able to understand it as easily. I would rate this book a 7/10

Matilda is a gifted young girl with an unfortunate family. They are all horrid to her and just don’t understand that she is talented and smart, way smarter than anyone in her family. When she finally gets her dream (to go to school) she is one happy child. Her brain finally gets exercised and someone finally realised how smart she is, her teacher Ms Honey is one of the loveliest ladies that you will ever meet. Unlike the principle; Ms trunchbull is just like her name, you do not want to get on the wrong side of her!

This is such an awesome book and it is a childhood favourite of mine! I would recommend this book for year 4 – 8 (meaning school years). This book will make you laugh, feel sympathy and bond with all the characters, apart from her family and Ms Trunchbull! Go on a journey with Matilda and face her ups and downs, face her mountains that she gets over in no time at all and just enjoy the book. This was a easy read for me but it was much enjoyed!

And of course she’s the smartest one there ! she is placed in Miss Honey’s class and she is a wonderful teacher ,who loves Matilda! Then Matilda discovers she has powers , and starts to use them . On her parents , and even Ms Trunchball the meanest principle you will ever meet ! The whole story is fun , and interesting ! It’s an easy read ! I’d rate this book an 10/10 !

  22. Matilda is a small girl. Her fathers is mean and is always picking on her, for wanting to read or learn. So when her Mum and Dad both leave for work, and her brother for school she secretly goes to the public library and borrows several books. Her father notices these books and decides to send her to school as she has wished. But this school has a horrible principle, named Ms Trunchbull. She is cruel to all of the students, as well as Matilda’s teacher Ms Honey. All through the book Matilda finds that she has secret powers, so she uses them for the greater good of the school.

I really enjoyed this book, from when I was little to now. I would recommend this book to year 6’s and up because it is a heartwarming book, that teaches a lot of life lessons. Like how you have to be yourself even if people are telling otherwise, and always do the right thing. My favourite part of the book is when Matilda stands up to Ms Trunchbull (the evil principle) for the rest of the students at her school. I can relate to this book, because Matilda is so invested in going to school. I think that sometimes I can be so involved in my work that I forget all of my worries (sometimes, depending on the subject!).

As a child I loved this book and was one of the first Roald Dahl books I ever read. I have read it multiple times and it never failed to have me sitting on the edge of my seat. Matilda is extremely intelligent and I loved seeing all the different things she was capable of. She is unique and not like the other children her age as she outsmarts her own family who do not support her at all, she will make trips to the library and read all ay long until she would go to school. I disliked how her family would get mad at her thinking she was trying to be smart and naughty however she stayed strong and I was inspired by how strong and capable she was. I felt sorry for her for having to live with such careless and selfish people but Ms Honey was like the mother she never had. I absolutely love this book and would recommend it for everyone as it is a nice easy and quick read. I rate this book a 10/10.

Matilda by Roald Dahl is must read for all ages. Amazingly well written by a very well known author, this book includes so many things that every little girl would love to read. Matilda is such a sweet, intelligent character, who’s parents don’t care about anything else but money and TV. After finally letting her go to school, Matilda finds herself in Miss Honey’s class, and is soon the smartest little girl in her grade. Miss Honey is blown away by her new student, and realises she must tell someone about Matilda. But after telling the principal Miss Trunchbull, miss honey soon realises Miss Trunchbull has quite a distaste for the child.

  27. Matilda is a heart warming novel to read, the author is Roald Dahl. I really enjoyed reading this novel, the book made me think and made me very grateful that i have a loving family who cares for me. In this book I was really intrigued with how Matilda loved reading at the age of 3. She taught herself how to read. At the age of four Matilda had already read all the children’s stories in the library. She is very smart and her adoptive parents are less than encouraging.
Matilda attends school,’finally’ and meets a lovely teacher Miss Honey, who she adores. However school is not so peaceful, where there is a frightening Miss Trunchbull, who you should stay away from and do not want to get in her way. My favourite character is Matilda because i wish i had the passion for reading that she had, she is always so calm even in the toughest situation. My favourite part of this novel is at the end where Matilda goes off and lives with mrs Honey.
I believe that the younger generation would enjoy this novel more than a teenage generation, i remember reading it at a young age. (in primary school)
I also really enjoyed the movie they made, for Matilda.

I really enjoyed this as I love the way Roald Dahl writes and the storyline of this book. Matilda is a young girl who loves to read but her stubborn parents hate the concept of a book as they love to watch television. Matilda as a 4 year old girl sets out to the library on her own and reads every book on the shelf, Mrs Phelps the librarian helps her to borrow them so she can take them home. She one days sets off to school and her kind and loving teacher Miss Honey soon realises Matilda is far ahead of the other children. She wants to move Matilda up to a higher class but the ghastly principle Ms Trunchball refuses as she is a horrid women. This book is a great read with one or two unexpected twists.

Matilda by Roald Dahl was an exceptional book about a young girl with an incredible mind. She is extremely brave as well as smart for her age. She dealt with a lot of things children that young usually can’t comprehend. I really in joy the way Roald Dahl writes as he takes you to another place and makes you feel like your really there. Matilda was always different to her family members; they all enjoyed watching T.V and eating dinner out of trays. Matilda would have much rather be reading a book than watching people on the television. She eventually got to expand her reading repertoire when her mother went to bingo. This meant she could escape to the library. She eventually gets a chance to go to school but she only faced more troubles there. I love how this book ends as its extremely heartwarming. I would rate this book an 8.5 out of 10 as it was quite good but it’s not my favorite.

Matilda by a British writer named Roald Dahl is an amazing book filled with imagination and creativity. I really enjoyed reading Matilda and it is one of my favourite books which I have read many times.

My Favourite character is Matilda Wormwood who is an intelligent and independent young girl who is very talented. Before Matilda is old enough to start school she is self taught and has the ability to look after herself like a thirty year old. Matilda’s favourite hobby is reading. Matilda discovers literature by herself and finds a local library which she continuously visits. Matilda soon goes on to read books made for adults, such as Moby Dick and much more.

Matilda comes from a family of four including her mother Mrs Wormwood, her Father Mr Wormwood and her older brother Michael Wormwood. Matilda’s Mother is almost never home as she is always at bingo with or out with her friends, leaving Matilda to do all of the house work and to make two meals a day. Matilda’s father Mr Wormwood is a car dealer who sells used cars and makes them look as good as new. Michael (Matilda’s brother) gets favoured by his parents while Matilda gets treated very badly. Matilda’s mother and father describe her as useless and do not care about her at all.

The chapters of the book lead you to an amazing ending which will blow you away!

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of reading Matilda and I would recommend it for anyone above the age of 7 or 8. I would rate this book a 8/10.

I hated Ms Trunchball because she is so mean and not a very nice teacher. I also liked Miss Honey because she is incredibly nice even though she had a very troubled past. I could visualise all the characters and I couldn’t stop reading. I rate this book 9/10.

I love the part when Matilda first discovers her powers because it’s so exciting. My favourite characters are Matilda and Miss Honey because they are both so kind, caring and curious.
A scary character in the book that I didn’t like was Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey’s Aunt, because she was mean and didn’t care about anyone else but herself. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good book.

I read Matilda when I was eight and it’s still one of my all time favourite books. I love the characters and the plot, and the way that it is written. I love the part at the end where Miss Honey takes Matilda in, and when Matilda first discovers her powers. Another good part is the one where Matilda starts taking revenge on her family by playing pranks on them. My favourite characters are Matilda, Miss Honey and Lavender. I love Miss Honey because she is so sweet and kind. Matilda’s family are the worst, they’re so mean to her and don’t support or encourage her in her reading. It’s a really nice and heartwarming story, and it makes you appreciate the people you have in your life. I would really recommend this book to people aged 7 and up, and I rate it 7.5/10. It’s a great book for kids and anybody would love the classic Roald Dahl story.

The story I believe anyone can relate to one way or another whether it’s through characters of even the plot. It also has a really good message behind the story. I absolutely love this story and think that it’s completely timeless. I love the fact that it was turned into not only a movie but a musical too which I can’t wait to see once it comes to Melbourne!! I would give this novel and 8/10 and for any age group

It has a great ending, which i’m sure you would love! I would give it a 5/5.

  56. Matilda, by Roald Dahl is one of my all time favourite books ever.
Matilda Wormwood is misunderstood by her parents since the day of her birth. Matilda is an exceptional, gifted, and almost supernatural child born to very average, unintelligent, and unimaginative parents.
It is not until Matilda attends school and meets the lovely Miss Honey that anyone begins to nurture her talent. Matilda has to survive a place ruled by the frightening and larger-than-life Miss Trunchbull who see’s her as “a nasty little worm”.
This story is heartwarming, a surprise mix of humour, adventure and mystery.
I loved how they turned this amazing book into a movie and they followed the story line very very well and there weren’t much differences between the book and the movie.
I would rate this book a 8.5/10 and would recommend it to any age because it is a good book to read for all ages. Matilda provides a strong message to children. You can do it.

This book is amazing and I have loved it from the age of 7, I saw the play in London last year and it reminded me how much of a family favourite this book is. I would recommend this book to anyone from the age of 6-20. I would rate this book a 10/10

I am in love with this book so much. Matilda is about this little girl and all she does is read and learns. Her family hates her so she goes to school and impress her favourite teacher Miss Honey, who is a very sweet and likes Matilda. Matildas principal Mrs Trunchball, is a very scary teacher, she throws children and puts them in this closet that has nails and pins hang out of them and smoke coming out. Matilda has special powers for good and for bad. My favourite part is when Matilda puts the hair remover jell in a bottle and he uses it and half his hair falls of. I give the book a 10/10 because it such a funny book by Roald Dahl

Matilda is a sneaky little girl who thinks she has been put into the wrong family because all her family would do is slave over the television all day an all night if they had the chance, but Matilda is quite the opposite she would rather sit in the library and read all day and night! So when her dad says when people are naughty, punish them instead of when kids are naughty, punish them so Matilda had an idea….. Whenever her dad or mum did something bad she would do something bad to them. See what she does in the book or movie. I recommend this book to ages 6-12. I give this book/movie a 9.5/10

I think that this is a great book with lots of emotion, passion, and standing up for what you believe in – even if it makes you a little bit scared. The problems that Matilda faces as a young girl are horrible and this just makes her stronger and smarter, which is what i love about this character! My favourite part of the book is when Matilda finds out about her powers, and then when she meets Miss Honey. This is definitely the cutest book ever and I can read it over and over again without being bored. It is the captivating, inspirational story of a little girl who has a horrible life. She is living with people who don’t love her. They are lies, cheats and bullies. But then Matilda starts to read. She reads and reads and reads. She discovers her magical powers.
Matilda has a teacher called Miss Honey. Miss Honey is clever, kind, beautiful, understanding and all the kids love her. She is impressed by Matilda’s knowledge and they become friends. There are a lot of adventured along the way.

I would love to recommend the movie AND book Matilda! Matilda is about a little girl who absolutely LOVES to read, write and everything in between. She is very, very, very bright and smart (at a very young age) which makes her unique and different. By this age she would just be starting School but she hasn’t because of her Parents (who don’t care what she does) so she begs them to let her go. At School Matilda makes lots of Friends and has the best of times. Her School Principal (Mrs Trunchbull) is SO mean and doesn’t care what the kids do (as long as they are having a miserable time). I don’t want to give away to much though, so you better watch it! I recommend this move to anyone aged between 6-14 but I think anyone would love it because it is a real Family movie! I give this movie 8/10!

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a different and creative read, but a funny and inspirational story line. Matilda is a great book its written by one of the best authors Roald Dahl who is brilliant at writing books. I’ve read this book 4 times and never got sick of it. Matilda’s father is a crook and a cheapskate her mothers is silly and dumb and her brother is fat and stupid. My favourite characters in this book is Ms. Honey Matilda’s teacher Ms. Honey is so nice and sweet but her aunty is evil Ms. Trunchbull who is the principle of Matilda’s school. My favourite part in the book would have to be when Ms. Trunchbull calls up Bruce Bogtrotter and makes him eat an entire chocolate cake and he finishes the cake with a massive BURP! that was funny. I didn’t like the part where Ms.Trunchbull locked Matilda in the Choky (which is a cupboard with nails in the door and pipes leaking water and its dark and cold that would’ve been scary. I love the ending to this book was great i love happy endings and this one was good. I saw the movie Matilda it was great i thought it would’ve been cheesy but it was wonderful. I absolutely love the part where Ms. Honey adopts Matilda, it’s such a cute scene!
I read the book first, and then watched the movie, and I think I like the book better! I still like the movie a lot but they are a bit different, so I like the book.
My favourite character was Matilda, I don’t know why, I just liked her.
But my least favourite character was Miss Trunchbull. I didn’t like her one little bit.
The story is about a little girl called Matilda, she was very smart, but she didn’t grow up with a good family, so you could say that she raised herself because she wasn’t anything like her mum and dad and brother.
She started at a school, and met Ms Honey who was her math teacher I think.
She then met Miss Trunchbull and she was very afraid.
In the middle of the film/story she discovered she had powers and she used them against Miss Trunchbull.
At the end of the book, her dad got caught for fdoing something illegal with the car place he worked at. So her family ran away, but she had just settled in at her school and she didn’t want to go, so Ms Honey adopted her.
I love this film and I think all ages should read/watch it.

The main character in this book is Matilda. Matilda is a five year old girl who is very clever but doesn’t gloat about it. She is very small for her age. Matilda is my favourite character because she is kind, brave, smart, loyal and cares about others.
Another one of my favourite characters is Miss Honey. Miss Honey is a Grade prep teacher. She is a sweet young women who always helps children.
I would recommend this book for girls or boys between all ages and rate this book 9/10. It is a great book that I’m sure you would enjoy it.

  100. i recommend the movie Matilda its about a young girl that is treated badly by her family. As she grows up she does things on her own and she is so smart when she grows up that her parents don’t belive her. she wants to go to school at 6 years old but her dad says no. while Matildas parents are at workl and her brother goes to school she goes to the library and borrows books and takes them home and reads them but when the dad gets home he goes into her room and wrecks the books so she can’t read them because Matilda doesn’t like watching T.V so her parents tell her off so then she can watch T.V all the time and then she goes to live with her teacher witch is like a second mum to her its a really interesting book

  102. I would like to recommend “Matilda” by Rohld Dahl.
Although some of you may have seen this movie, I strongly suggest you read the book!
This is a story about a young and intellegent girl named Matilda who is neglected by her parents.
When Matilda finally starts school, she realises she has a power that no-one else has.
Matilda used this power to humiliate the cruel princible, help her new teacher (& friend), and find things out.
During this story, the author uses fantastic words and a great story line to put this book together and make it awesome.
I like how in this story, it shows abandonment, loneliness, determination, self esteem, courage, happiness and love.
This is a good read for people between the ages of 9/10 – 14
    Enjoy!

  105. Matilda is by far my favourite Roald Dahl book af all time. It is about an incredibly bright young girl called Matilda, whose family are a bunch of liars and cheats and who value television over academic success. Life isn’t much better for Matilda at school, as the evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull prevents all types of fun learning activities and instead prefers a strict curriculum based on discipline and cruelty. However, when Miss Honey comes along, Matilda begins to feel happy and flourishes both academically and socially, and even stands up for some of the victims of Miss Trunchbull’s harsh punishments. And when Matilda develops a strange ability to move objects with her eyes. And that is just the beginning… An absolute classic that could be enjoyed by readers of all ages, I give Matilda a 10/10

  107. “Matilda” written by Roald Dahl is one of my favourite childhood books. Matilda has been called a cheat, liar, ignorant and stupid but the truth is that they are really the stupid ones and Matilda is a child genius! Matilda has always hidden, described as useless and used as Mr and Mrs Wormwood’s personal slave. So when Matilda is allowed to attend school she is over joyed with happiness, that’s until she meets Miss Trunchbull the strictest, evilest human living! But with Miss Honey’s help she might just survive or will she?

She goes to the library every day when her parents and brother are out, eventually her father gets sick of her so he sends her to school, just like she always wanted. She has the nicest teacher, Miss Honey and she lloves her to bits. Matilda finds out she has powers and starts playing tricks on people who have ever been mean to her. 111. Matilda by Roald Dahl has always been one of my favourite books and one I’d recommend to year 7s and 8s. I really enjoy Roald’s style of writing and it enables me to escape into a word where there are no horrible worries (usually). Matilda is my favourite of his books because of the story line and the characters.
Matilda is an exceptionally smart girl and always has been. She goes everyday to the library while her mum is out. Her parents don’t care about brains; only money and the TV dinners. Matilda ends up going to school and once again is the smartest. She is in Miss Honey’s class who loves her like a daughter. Matilda starts to play little tricks on her parents and eventually on the evil principle Ms Trunchball.
The ending is great and it’s a fantastic, quick easy read.
