The blog for books and movies

Twelve-year-old Carley Connors can take a lot. Growing up in Las Vegas with her fun-loving mother, she’s learned to be tough. But she never expected a betrayal that would land her in a foster care. When she’s placed with the Murphys, a lively family with three boys, she’s blindsided. Do happy families really exist? Carley knows she could never belong in their world, so she keeps her distance.

It’s easy to stay suspicious of Daniel, the brother who is almost her age and is resentful she’s there. But Mrs. Murphy makes her feel heard and seen for the first time, and the two younger boys seem determined to work their way into her heart. Before she knows it, Carley is protected the boys from a neighbourhood bullly and even teaching Daniel how to play basketball. Then just when she’s feeling like she could truly be one of the Murphys, news from her mother shakes her world.

  1. I loved this book, for the most part at least. I was reading this book for lit circles and I was super glad I was selected because it was recommended to me by many people and it was my first preference. One of the Murphys is about a 12-year-old girl named Carley Conners who was in an abusive home. One night ambulances were called and rushed to the scene with the siren screaming and the lights flashing blue and red and in a moment it was over and Carley woke up in a hospital room with bruises and an aching headache and a social worker waiting for her to awake to tell her the news that she would be placed in foster care until her mum was ready. To cut a long story short she ended up in the care of a gorgeous family but she felt like she didn’t fit in. She finally made a friend who was the complete opposite and when she finally felt loved she heard the news her mum had recovered from her addictions and her abusive boyfriend had fled the scene and she said her goodbyes and shed some tears and headed off with her mum with her new family embedded in her heart. As I said I really enjoyed this book but I definitely think there was room for improvement at the end as it was boring.

  2. One for the Murphys is a gorgeous and heartfelt story of a young girl who goes to live with a family called the Murphys, after being abused by her mother’s boyfriend. It follows the life of Carly as she navigates her way through her emotional journey of wanting to be loved and cherished just as every child does. Mrs Murphy is such a kind and genuine character that I think everyone immediately loves. She has Carly’s back in every situation and just wants what is best for her. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think that if you enjoy inspiring books, you should give this one a try! I give it a 6/10! Very good!

When I was told we were doing Lit circles and I would be reading one for the Murphys I was less than excited. But once I started reading and understanding the life of Carley I just couldn’t stop. It was so hard to have to put done the book at chapter… Carley’s adventures through foster care, abusive parents and well just becoming an adult is fascinating. This book is relatable to what many teens are feeling or have felt. I now LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

I would recommend this to anyone 9+ because anyone younger may not find it interesting or relatable. I rate this book a 10/10!!! I think anyone that reads this book will love it whether they are 9 or 14!

  6. One for the Murphys is one of my favourite books of all time. Filled with drama it is about a teenage girl called Carley and her journey through abuse, the foster care system and a new family. The stories about her past broke my heart and you get so attached and intrigued. This is the first book that I’ve read in awhile that I can truly say I couldn’t put it down. Every chapter and character has had so much thought which makes the story feel real and like it could go down many different paths. If you like stories about hardship, drama and books that force out tears then this is for you. 10/10!!!

I absolutely love this book as it is such a heartwarming and lovely book about belonging and what it is like to be in a foster family. Carley is such an intelligent and great person, but finds it hard to accept being away from her biological mother at first and that real loving families do exist. A rollercoaster of emotions, this book really teaches you about what it would feel like to be in the shoes of a foster child, and the emotions each one goes through to belong in families. I would really recommend this book to anyone, as I think it can teach people a lot of important messages, and open people’s eyes to different experiences. It has been a while since I have read this book, but I definitely love it and would love to pick it up again soon!!

Wow, this book has been such a great book. I loved it when they had a leaving party for Carly. I thought that that would make her feel really good and I thought that I would love for someone to do that to me if I was leaving a house that I really loved. All the obstacles that Carly had to face to be with a happy family made me feel so happy for her when she was finally settling in with the Murphys. but when she had left, it made me feel so bad for her and I just wanted her to stay with them and then for her mum to get better and then to move in near were the Murphys lived so that they could still be family friends. When Mrs. Murphy said that the girl in the story that she had told Carly, that it was actually her, I almost fell off my chair. I was so surprised!!! when Carly kept running away from her mum in the hospital, it was making me sooooo angry with her and I had to stop reading it and leave it for a while.

One for the Murphy’s has to be one of my favourite books ever. I honestly think everyone should read this book, it is such a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking book. It follows a girl called Carly, who is placed in a foster home with a family called the Murphy’s. At first, Carly doesn’t enjoy her time their, and has trouble getting along with one of the brothers, Daniel. But by the end, Carly starts to feel like one of the family. My favourite part of the book is the end. Without giving anything away, this part definitely left me in tears, and I really recommend it too everyone of all ages. I rate this book a 10/10!

  13. One for the Murphy’s, what a great book that everyone deserves to read. It defiantly educates us all as readers on how child abuse is so harming and how orphanages work. Carley the main character is a very humorous and intelligent young individual this helps her keep her emotional walls high and thick, she always likes to keep strong. The day she becomes a foster child, and moves in with the family called the Murphy’s, she feels the sense of blindside. This loving, caring family shows Carley the stable family life she never exactly thought existed, she thought her and her mother were the perfect match but she eventually realised after all maybe they weren’t. The Murphy family defiantly changed my thoughts about this story, they even made me feel connected, safe and heart warmed. They treated Carley like the daughter they never had, it was just so beautiful to experience and follow the story with the characters, I felt rather connected. Despite Carly’s resistance, the Murphy’s eventually show her what it feels like to belong, until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She’s not exactly a Murphy, but the gifts they’ve given her have opened up a new future. This book is a very heartwarming and exhilarating, it really had made me think and wonder along the way. The ending was a bit disappointing but I still enjoyed it, I recommend this book to all ages. Overall I would rate it a 8 out of 10, it sure did hit the spot for me. Do your self a favour and read One for the Murphy’s, you won’t regret it!!!

One for the Murphy’s is a great book about Carley that moves into her new families home The murphy as she came from a foster home. This is a sad and happy book. It was lovly seeing Carley getting closer to the family. This book is an easy read. i would recommend this book to 11+ and people who like a guessing book as most things are not guessable.

  15. One for the murphy’s is a great book with a sad story. I found this book just perfect for because it wasn’t too hard but it was too easy. I learnt new tings from it and I really enjoyed reading it. I rate it an 8/10 because I liked how they descried the personalities of the characters and the different things they did.

  16. One For The Murphy’s
This book is a whirlwind of events all happening in a young girl named Carley’s life. She is a young girl growing up in Las Vegas with her mother who is single and wild, Carley shortly moves back to Connecticut where her mother meets a man named Dennis. Dennis is an abusive and rude man who wants nothing but money.
Carley has a fearless attitude and a bold confidence which doesn’t help her in situations, Her mum and herself were put in hospital by Dennis and her mum was injured very badly.
Carley was sent to a newly found home as a foster child she was sent to the Murphy’s household. This is the home where the perfect family live and Carley hates perfection.
My favourite part of the book was when she and her friend Toni watched the baseball with Mr Murphy it was a fatherly moment for Carley who had never experienced a Dad before

    I loved this book and I rate it a 8 / 10

This is a beautiful book. Overwhelming, emotionally gripping, surprisingly touching. I did not expect to find my emotions running up and down different octaves like piano notes.
YA reading, for tweens. But just as heartwarming and uplifting for adults.
It’s a short book, a quick read, but one that had me leave everything to finish it. I just could not walk away.
After closing the book I wished reality was not so removed from fiction in this case. If all foster parents were like the Murphies, there would not have been so much heartache in the world of lost children. My heart just broke for this young girl.
I absolutely recommend this book to EVERYONE.

One for the Murphy’s is such a great book and I loved it. It was a little bit sad in a few parts especially when carley’s mum and boyfriend (Dennis) betray her one night and so she then ends up in a foster care home and the Murphy’s take her in. The Murphy’s do such a great job at looking after her and make her feel a like a real part of there family. This book is such a great book and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone.

  19. I just finished reading one for the Murphy’s for my literature circles group and it was such a great book, full of surprises. This book is about a girl called Carley Connors and she lives with her mum. Everything changes one night when Carley’s mother and her mothers boyfriend (Dennis) betray Carley and then she ends up in foster care. Carley goes to stay with a family called the Murphy’s who love Carley, but she thinks the Murphy’s are too perfect but overtime Carley found a place in her heart for the Murphy’s and Carley loves them all like a real family. My favourite character is Carley because throughout this book I see how much of a determent and strong character Carley is. I rate this book a 8/10.

One for the murphy’s is by far one of the best books i have ever read, its such a wonderful tale of a young girl who is abused by her parents. The book shows how someones life can go from disaster to happiness by just one person impact. Carly, being the main character in the book was sent into foster care and sent away from her family. This book is enticing and addictive but also sad heartbreaking and emotional at the same time. Carley forms a strong bond with her foster mother who she calls Mrs. murphy and is very close to. Over time Carley learns how to let her feelings out and open up to someone she doesn’t know. Because Carley’s mum never talked to her about her feelings she was changed by the end of her time with the Murphy’s. Overall this book is a great read i i think you will love it !

This book is such an emotional journey. I love this book because Carley is such an emotional person, by the end you can clearly see that. It is such a struggle for Carley because her world turns upside down when her mother betrays her. When she hears news from her mother she doesn’t know which way to turn because she loves her mother inside but she has learned to love the Murphy’s and treat them as her family. This book is so heart-warming and mysterious. I absolutely love this book, I would rate it a 9/10! I would recommend this book for ages 11+.

For literature circles, my group and I are reading one for the Murphy’s. At first I found that the book dragged on for a while but after 2 or 3 chapters I started to like it because it had me always wondering what Dennis did to Carley and her mum. I find the book a little bit sad and depressing because there are very little happy moments in the book but I like that it is a change from what I usually read (happy and adventurous books). My favourite characters in the book is Mrs Murphy and Michael Eric because they both are most of the time happy and Mrs Murphy is so caring to Carley and I like Michael Eric because he is always nice to Carley and he sounds so cute. My favourite part in the book was when Michael Eric wants to play with Carley so they played superheroes also when he wanted to keep Carley’s teddy Mr Longneck. In the book I imagine Mrs Murphy really pretty and elegant with brown long hair and with fairish skin. I also imagine Carley to have brown hair and fair skin with freckles. Overall so far I have enjoyed the book and can’t wait to read more.

  24. i am reading the book ‘one for the murphy’s’ for lit circles.
so far One for the Murphy’s is an amazing book and i can’t take my eyes off it! One of my favourite characters is Mrs Murphy as she seem absolutely lovely and sometimes seems a bit to nice. Carley is also one of favourites and i think that after she becomes more settled in with the Murphy’s she will fit in just right. At the moment she has a really close bond with the youngest son Michael-Eric and Adam, I think that after time she will become closer with Daniel as they don’t get along so well now. I absolutely LOVE this book and i think you will too.
