The blog for books and movies

Once I escaped from an orphanage to find Mum and Dad.

Once I saved a girl called Zelda from a burning house.

Once I made a Nazi with toothache laugh.

My name is Felix.

This is my story.

Everybody deserves to have something good in their life.

At least once.

this book is about a boy that is jewish and escapes from an orphanage when the Nazis were in power and find so many people on the way that are nice and look after him but in the end he has to either leave them or the are gone forever. I have read this book 2 and i love it so if you liked it there are 7 or 8 books in the season and they are all as good as the first on. I would recommend this book for kids over the age of 10 because there is still some bits that kids do not want to hear.

  2. Once- what a heartwrenching book. This book follows the journey of Felix, a Jewish orphan, through World War II in Poland. We travel with him as he makes friends, loses them, witnesses horrific trauma and finds himself in life-threatening situations all the while trying to look after himself and his dearest, and possibly most dangerous friend, Zelda. In the past, I have found that Morris Gleitzman’s books are a bit hit or miss, but Once is a truly enthralling book that will reduce you to tears as you discover what life was like back in WWII, and how brutally unforgiving some people were. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone over the age of 11, as some of the themes can be a bit confronting. An incredible book, and if you enjoy it, the rest of the series is just as amazing.

absolutely amazing I love this series so much it is my optimal of sob stories. I love the story behind why morris wrote this book it is just as inspirational as the book is, Morris Gleitzman is an amazing author who has taken a different perspective on such a dark time. of such a sad and innocent boy Felix gives us the illusion that everything can be saved even when he doesn’t understand the real problem he just knows that it doesn’t need to be burning books. I also love the way that Felix isn’t afraid of his opinions and the love that he and Zelda get in such a hard time, which really does show that even in a dark time there is still room for happiness and kindness.

  5. one of my most favourite books of all time! i first started reading this book with my whole class last year but they were going to slow and i needed to know what happened! it is about a boy named felix and it is a world war and he is not safe. he escapes his orphanage and runs away. this book goes through a little boys naive eyes and really shows you how hard life was back then for all the jewish kids and parents.
this book really teaches you how lucky we are to be in this safe and happy world.

  6. I really enjoyed reading Once, it is probably my favourite Morris Gleitzman book. It is sad, emotional, surreal and horrific. The book follows a young boy Felix who recently escaped from an orphanage, yet he was completely oblivious to the war taking place. Throughout the book, his innocence is taken away as he witnesses horrible acts and events. My favourite character is probably Zelda, she is so brave, courageous and independent despite the fact that she lost her whole family. The only thing that I would change about the book is the ending. I loved reading this book and I would also recommend the sequels. 9/10!

  7. This is such a great and emotional book to read and i just have to continue the series. a great thing about this book is that Felix is a lifesaver and is such a kind hearted boy who waits for his parents to come back although it is really sad what happens thats what gives the book some character! Felix was just a little boy and clueless about was coming to him which led him to want to find his parents along the way many things happened in such detail which is why i think you should give it a read. considering the circumstances of the book i would recommend for people 10 years + and I would rate this a 9/10

i love these sorts of books because it is about the things that happened back in the olden days and is based on world war 2, its about how Hitler wasn’t very nice to the jewish.

i would recommend ages 11+ read this because there are some scary scenes but its also good for older people to read.

I really enjoyed the book ‘Once’, it really inspired me to learn more about WW2 and what happened in it, I loved it so much that I ended up reading the whole series! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about WW2 or get an introduction to it. I think this book really got me interested into the WW2 kind of genre, If I had to choose an age audience I would probably say kids from 9 or 10 to even adults! Looking through the world in a young jewish boys eyes in the middle of a war-torn time kind of made me feel more grateful for the things I have and made me think about what life would be like without these things, in a way, this book made me a happier and more-grateful person, I absolutely loved this series and I hope you do to! I give this book a 9.85/10.

  11. Once, by Morris Gleitzman is one of the saddest books I have ever read. The story follows a young orphaned boy called Felix, during the time of world war 2. One day he finds a carrot in his soup and comes to the decision that this is a message from his parents. So he sets out to find them. During this time he saves a girl from a burning house, almost gets shot and helps sick young homeless kids. This is one of my favourites books. I recommend it to anyone 12+ 9/10!

  12. I thought this book was one of the saddest i could ever read but at the same time I still really enjoyed it but I wouldn’t recommend it to younger children. It was really sad how Felix thought his parents were alive but they weren’t. There were so many tragedies in this book but the one good thing was that Felix lived. I think that the orphanage was a sad place and that the children and lades that worked there deserved much better facilities. I also find it quite weird of how dentists operated at the time. The describing of teeth being pulled out sounded very painful and stressing. In this book you could get your cries and laughs and I really enjoyed it. Overall I would rate this book a nine out of ten because I loved it.

This book puts you in the mind of a boy named Felix who is a Jew. I have read all the books in this series and would happily read them all again. These books take you on a journey and show you what really happened in the eyes of a Jew in WW2. This book made my cry, laugh and fall in love with all the characters. I promise that once you read Once, you’ll want to read all the other books because of how incredible they are. This book is and will always be my favourite book. I would rate it a 10/10

  17. This is one of my favourite books! But definitely one of the saddest books that I have ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed how this book was set in a little boys perspective, which is very different compared to other books written about this time. I love the amount of detail that the author has put into this story. It really made me think that I was in his place, living in a war torn country. I also love how in the story Felix took in Zelda like she was his own daughter, protecting her from harms way. Overall I recommend this story to anyone who isn’t afraid to have a good cry while reading it, but I would give a warning because some parts are a bit heavy. I would give this story a 9.5/10

What a book! This is one of my favourite books of all time, it has everything, from action to friendship. The story is set in the war, so there is obviously plenty of action and suspense. My favourite aspect of the book is that it’s filled with history, and I have learnt so much about the war from reading not only this book, but the rest of the books in the series. Felix is so incredibly brave and innocent at the same time, and I was able to experience war from a different perspective outside just statistics. My favourite character is Zelda, as she brings so much humor and innocence to the storyline and puts a smile on my face whenever she says something. I would recommend this book for anyone over 12, as there is some pretty heavy material.

Iv’e read this book so many times and i definitely recommend it! it has so many different amazing characters in it and thats what makes the book so intreating to me. Felix’s naivety to the realities and danger surrounding him makes you want to shake him at times but simultaneously you also want to protect him from the evils that he’s facing. His eternal optimism keeps you hoping that everything will end the way Felix hopes it to. this is definitely one of my favourite Morris GleItzman books so far i cant wait to read the rest of the series.

  22. Once is a gorgeous book, written by the very talented writer Morris Gleitzman. It is the first in a series about a boy called Felix who lives in an orphanage after his parents took him there in fear of his safety as he is a jew. However, when Felix receives a carrot in his soup he holds a strong belief that it is a sign that his parents are coming to get him. Set in world war 2, this book displays the lives of the innocent children and many others who are effected by World War 2, especially those who are Jewish, living in Germany, under Hitler’s reign. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested and fascinated by the events of world war two, and even those who are just looking for a good read. I loved every word of it.

I loved this book because it was written in a older time about the jews. It’s different from all the other books I’ve read, but it wants me to keep reading more and more once I finish the chapter.
What was your favourite part of the book/movie? Why?
It would have to be the start where Felix escapes the orphanage to find his parents. Because he comes across different challenges but that doesn’t stop him.
Who was your favourite character? Why?
Felix because he was adventurous brave and has a great heart.
Would you recommend this book/movie to others? Why?
I would definitely recommend this book to others not just to teens but to adults as well, it is one of my favourite books I’ve read so far, so go check it out.

I recommend Once to any reader that loves adventure, mystery or just wants to read an amazing book. I absolutely loved Once so much that I had to read the next book. Once is not only about surviving as an innocent Jewish boy, it also shows you how lucky you are and how grateful you should be. The book is so touching that I admit I shed a few tears. Not only is the book spectacular, but as you read on in the book, you might realize how different and unique Morris Gleitzman’s writing is. I am not sure if this is an advantage or a disadvantage because I tend to find that some people like it and some people don’t. Personally, I loved that way he wrote the book because you never know when something new or terrifying will pop into the book which gave me the sense of Mystery. Overall, this book is definitely one of my all-time favorite Morris Gleitzman books. The story-line is so touching and the way the book was written is a beautiful finish. All I really have to say about this book is that it’s a dream story that became real.

  28. I recommend a book called Once. This book is in a series. It is written by Morris Gleitzman and is a book that you can never put down. I loved reading this book it is so inspiring. This book is placed in a Jewish orphanage in WW2. This book follows the story about a young Jewish boy named Felix. He has at in the orphanage for exactly 3 years and 8 months for his parents to come back for him. Felix has loved books all of his life, he remembers when his parents read to him at night. So to forget about the bad things that are happening he wraps himself up in books to keep him happy and safe. One day Felix decides to take matters into his own hands and runs away from the orphanage to go look for his parents. Unfortunately, it’s in the middle of 1942 when Hitler is looking for Jews and murdering them. Felix is just a 10-year-old boy who thinks Hitler is good and he will help him with the situation. While in the real world Hitler is murdering Felix’s own kind. Before long Felix meets a little 5-year-old girl whose name is Zelda. Felix finds Zelda unconscious outside a burning house, and finds her parents shot not far away. So Felix takes Zelda with him and tells her stories to forget about the past and to take her mind off of her parents. Together they try to find Felix’s parents and to try to get to the Nazi camp. The two have to jump massive hurdles and have to overcome their fears. I love this book because it is so inspiring and is based on a true event. I love how creative it is and how it is suitable for children. When I first picked this book up and started to read the first chapter, I seriously could not put the book down. I had to finish the chapter off and start a new one. This book is in a series called the Once series after this book there is Then, Now, After, Soon and Morris Gleitzman is working on a book called Maybe. I rate this book a 10/10 because of how it is so capturing. I would recommend this book for ages 12+.

  29. This touching novel is about a boy named Felix. His parents place him in an orphanage in war-torn Poland, they tell him that they must leave to fix their book business. Felix is determined to escape the orphanage he lives in to save his Jewish parents from the Nazis. The book doesn’t show you Felix’s emotions it tells you.The book tells the reader that he likes to make up stories and is considered by others to be quite good at it. Felix always carries a notebook in which he writes down his stories and hides it inside his shirt for safekeeping. This book is so heart wrenching and is probably one of my favourite Morris Gleitzman books. I would recommend this book to the anyone who is about to do the ‘Boy in striped pajamas’ assessment task as it relates to the topic.

Morris Gleitzman is my favorite author and always keeps me engaged and he NEVER leaves me bored. He uses clever and complicated words and they are so eye-catching and mind bobbling. Felix is the best character I think ever invented. He makes me want to be a better person every day. The way he is kind, and always is helping people and putting them before himself and always finds a positive in a terrible heartbreaking day. I love this book so much that I know everyone will too.

  31. This touching novel is an inspiring story about a young Jewish boy named Felix, who lived in Poland, and is on a quest to find his book-keeper parents after he sees the Nazi’s burning books from a Catholic orphanage library in which he stays. He finds a girl called Zelda in a burning house with her dead parents, and he takes her with him and protects her from confronting her parents’ death by telling her stories. Together, they strive to stay alive, but not really understanding whats going on. This is defiantly one of my favourite books because I’m really interested in knowing about the dark period of time known as the holocaust, about how hard and difficult it was for all the Jewish people, and if it is still to this day. There are 4 other books apart of these amazing series; Then, After, Now & soon. When I was only in year 3, I began to develop a strong interest with these series, and have continuously reading them over and over since. I recommend them for anyone who loves a bit of fear, sadness and history, as these books really teach you a lot. My own personal rating would be a 4.5/10!!

I absolutely love this book. It shows you a truly saddening perspective of what is happening around Felix in these hard times. Although all of this is happening in front of Felix, he still manages to stay positive and strong. This book teaches you a lot of things, and I recommend it to anyone that is interested.

I would recommend ONCE by Morris Gleitzman. It comes in a set of three books ONCE THEN and NOW all by the same author with the same story line. It was set in 1942 where world war 2 (mostly known as the holocaust) took place. Its about a young orphan who wants to find his long lost parents so he escapes from the orphanage to search for them. I never cried while reading it but it was quite sad. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book so much and it’s a book that you will certainly enjoy!

  57. The book Once is a very, very good book, the book is always taking unexpected turns and never fails to entertain you. It shows you another angle about what it would be like to be a jew when hitler was around, it’s something different than what you would see on just a normal TV documentary. Felix was both the main character and my favourite character, he was just a young boy when his parents abandoned him at an orphanage in the mountains, throughout the book Felix goes on a journey to find his parents, but sends it hard as that he is a jew in the time of hitler. I would have preferred a different ending but found the one that Moris Gleitzman had written was was very much thrilling and breath taking.

My favourite part of the book is when Felix saves Zelda from the burning house because once he had saved her he didn’t just leave her there, he waited until she woke up and then made sure she was alright and then took her on his journey to find his parents. I do recommend this book to people because it is an AMAZING book that you won’t be able to stop reading!

Felix and Zelda are such loveable characters, and I love having an inside view on what it must have been like back in the Nazi times. I am very interested in Hitler, and reading this helped me learn more about the reality of the history and I loved every minute of it. 100% recommend reading this and the other books in the series. 9.5/10

I love this book by Morris Gleitzman and especially the following books in the series. I thought this book was very intriguing and teaches us a lot about history and World War ll. I recommend this book to anyone who likes an adventure and books that touch your heart. I also HAVE to recommend the following books in the series: Then, Now and After. If you read the whole series, it gives you a deeper and clearer understanding of Once and the story behind it. Morris Gleitzman usually writes humorous books such as Bumface or Extra Time. So this series was a bit of a surprise to me because its a different genre to his usual books.

I really love this book, it is about a jewish boy named Felix who has been living in an orphanage, he leaves the orphanage to find his home town including his parents’ boom store, stranded. He starts an amazing journey to find his parents and on the way saves a little girl named Zelda from a burning house. He finds himself and Zelda running from Nazis trying to not get killed. They meet amazing characters along the way and this book really hits you on the more emotional side of World War 2, there are 3 books following and they are all just as good and thrilling. I definitely recommend this book for ages probably 10+

This is an amazing book about a jewish boy called Felix in the 1st word war. He leaves an orphanage, which is parents put him in, and leaves to find them. He befriends a girl called Zelda, who is the daughter of a Nazi. My favourite character in the book would have to be either Felix. He protects Zelda as her parents died in the house fire that Felix rescued her from. I would rate this book 10 out 10. I think Morris Gleitzman did a fantastic job. The next 3 books are amazing too. It would have to be one of my favourite series. Felix is lucky, as he doesn’t end up in a concentration camp, but is still forced to flea when the Nazis invade his place of hiding. I have read many other books by Morris Gleitzman, but I think that this is one of his best books yet. You would love this book if you like history and adventure. I would recommend this book to children 10+. It is about war, and it might frighten younger children. Happy Reading!

  67. I have read many of the Morris Gleitzman book and this is one of my favourite’s by far. It is the first of the series. Once is an amazing and harrowing story. Felix, a jewish boy in Poland in 1942, is hiding from the Nazis is a Catholic orphanage. Felix know nothing about the war and thinks he is only in the orphanage while his parent travel. When felix thinks his parents are in danger, Felix sets off to warn them. He is headed straight into the heart of Nazi-occupied Poland. When Felix’s journey get’s increasingly dangerous, he begins to see horrors that stories can’t even explain. Despite his grim surroundings, Felix never loses hope. I love how Morris turns a painful subject and turns it into a story filled with friendship, love and even humor. I would rate this book 81/2 / 10 and would recommend it to all ages.

This book is my favourite of the series. I read it I think in grade six with school and this series is the best. Once especially taught me a lot about world war II and from a young child’s perspective. Zelda and Felix are so good together and you grow such a connection with them in the book that it feels like real life. It is so sad, but I think that is what makes the book so good. It is amazing how two kids have so much determination and can protect themselves so well against the nazis. Felix being a Jew, made it so much harder for him, but it is so good seeing how he fights to stay alive, whilst looking after Zelda who is only 6. I would recommend this book to anyone from grade 5 and above and I would rate it a 9/10.

Once is a tragic story from the era of the Jewish and Nazi revolution. The main character is a orphan boy that is also a Jew. When Felix is eating his soup, he finds a carrot, which is very unusual to find in your soup at the orphanage. Felix jumps to the conclusion that his parents are still alive and have sent this carrot as a message. So Felix escapes from the orphanage to begin his adventure of finding his parents. This story is a tear-jerker, the odd horror, adventure and excitement. I would recommend this book for anyone 12+ and rate it a 9.5/10.

It makes you feel many emotions that you would not normally feel when reading a book and ever since I read the first page I knew that it was going to be a really enjoyable read. As the second world war was going on Felix had no idea about it and one morning decided to finally go find his parents, but along the way a lot of things happened and suddenly everyone hated Jews and wanted them all to no longer be apart of the worlds population. As Felix was in Nazi Germany many things happened like him finding a 6year old girl who survived after being in a burning building. Her characteristics were very funny and sometimes Felix could not be bother with her but in the end they stuck together no matter what and were each others family. This is a heartfelt and emotional book. It is about a boy named Felix, who is an orphan. Felix knows only few things about his life and parents. His parents were Jews and they owned a bookshop. One day Felix escapes the orphanage he is homed in. He is on a mission to find his Parents, convinced they are signalling for him. On his journey, Felix finds a little girl named Zelda. Her family is lying around her, dead. Felix takes Zelda on in his travels. As they adventure together, through highs and lows it is an amazing and intriguing story. It is written so well and I would say a 10/10 absolutely.

Once by Morris Gleitzman is a well written book, with lots of descriptive language that really helped me to form the storyline in my head. I just couldn’t put it down!
The storyline, however, is really sad. How the author described the events in the book was really into depth, which made me cry. I really felt as if I was Felix experiencing what he saw the horrible Nazies doing. Felix had so much courage, looking for his parents, even though he had no idea what was really happening around him until later in the book.
What made me smile though, was Zelda. Her famous line she said “Don’t you know anything?!” made me smile even in the saddest parts of the book. She was definitely my favourite character because of the light she provided to the book.
I would rate this book a 10/10, for it’s depth and great description in the storyline. Although it is rated a children’s book, I reccommend Once for people of the age 11 and up because there is a lot of horrible things the Nazies did to the Jews and to anyone who helped them

If you read this, have some tissues next to you because you will need them!

I think that the orphanage was a sad place and that the children and lades that worked there deserved much better facilities. I also find it quite weird of how dentists operated at the time. The describing of teeth being pulled out sounded very painful and stressing. In this book you could get your cries and laughs and i really enjoyed it. This series is amazing. It is about a 12 year old boy called Felix and a six year old girl called Zelda who are in the Nazi War. Felix is the son of two jewish book owners. He gets sent to a catholic orphanage and waits for three years for his parents to pick him up – it never happens so he goes to find them. When he arrives back home he finds it is in the hands of someone else. He comes across Zelda in his search for his parents in her burning house. Her parents are dead. Her Dad was a Nazi soldier. I feel that the author really captured what a child’s mind is like. The story is one of my favourites and I recommend this to anyone!

  97. At my sister’s school, they had to read this book. I picked it up off the ground (because my sister is a pig and doesn’t pick up her things) and started to read it. I couldn’t put it down! I know that it is based on real past events called the Holocaust, when the German Nazis (soldiers of Adolf Hitler) set up a Death camp during the time of World War II, to eradicate all the Jews that were living in Europe. The Nazis murdered six million Jews, including one and a half million children. These events interest me quite a bit, and i love reading books about them.

I think that so far, my favourite character is Zelda, because she is so cute yet annoying, when she tells Felix “Don’t you know anything?” at the end of each sentence. I love how innocent Felix is, and how he makes up all different stories that account for reasons why the Nazis are burning all the Jewish books and separating the children from the adults in the Death camps. I think that i read this book in a little less than a day, but i was so sad when i finished it, because i want to read more! After you read this book, you must read Then and Now (I haven’t yet, but I’ll get onto that). There are many graphic scenes in this novel, and even though my 11 year old sister read it, i recommend not reading this book until you have somewhat of an idea in what happened in the Holocaust. I recommend people ages 13+ should read this, but anyone younger than this wouldn’t understand what’s going on. I think that this book deserves ★★★★★ five stars, because i think that it is written in such a way that it’s easy for younger people to understand, and is also appropriate for older readers as well.

I love reading books about refugees and nazi’s. but this book is just one of a kind. I would rate it a 10/10.

I thought this book was really good. I have read this book twice and I enjoyed it more each time I read it. At first a didn’t get it as it is quite a mature read but once I read it the second time it all seemed to make sense. I really like how Morris Gleitzman built up the relationship between Felix and Zelda, In the end they turn out to be very sibling like. They both cared for each other. I thought that the storyline was very well structured, it all fitted well and I really like how this book had history in it. I didn’t even know that much about how the Jewish were treated by the Nazi’s until I read this book. It really opened me up to the history of the war. I rate it 9/10

This is a really good book to read, I actually enjoyed reading this very much, this book is about a small, innocent child during the holocaust. The young boy Felix, who was jewish and his parents put him into a catholic orphanage to protect him and keep him safe when the soldiers come to take the jews away. Felix still believes that his parents will come and get him, but when they fail to do so, he rans away from the orphanage trying to find them. Great read, definitely recommend

It is very heart wrenching book and it will change the way you see things in real life. At some points it is so hard to imagine how hard life was for little Jewish boy named Felix in a time when Hitler was slaying all Jewish people and putting them into concentration camps. Felix never new his parents because when he was very little they put him into a English orphanage to keep him safe. Felix always new he was different to everybody else but he never knew why until one day the Nazis came to there orphanage and burned all the Jewish books. His most trusted friend, which was a lady who worked at the orphanage told him that he was a Jew and that the Jewish people were getting killed. He asked if his parents were still alive because all his life he was told that he was english and his parents died in a fire.
Felix ran away from the orphanage looking for his parents and hoping that they were still alive. On the way he met a little friend and started their journey to find his parents and live happily ever after.

It was one of the most inspirational books I have read, I know there are a lot of books about Hitler and the second world war but because this was written by a little boy I could really feel pain and in some ways relate to him. I know I’m not in a war but this book can really inspire people to look on the bright side of life even if it is not going to plan.

The characters really made this book the best it could be, I never got board of Felix and Zelda’s adventures. There was so many twists and turns in the book that I could not stop reading.

Even though this was about a war this book was a positive and funny book with characters that have amazing personalities. I recommend this book to all agers and I cant wait to read Then and Now.

Wow, this book is amazing. I don’t know where to start. From the changes of the lie=ves, from innocent little kids, to weird things that happen. It is all about how Adolf Hitler changes Felix. From the first time he saw book being burnt by the Nazis, to when he is taken away. You really get a feel of how it was like to be in the holocaust. I love this book, but sometimes it can be a bit graphic. So I would recommend this book to 9+. I would also rate it 10/10. I enjoyed the whole series of these books and I sugest you keep reading!

Felix is just so naive all the time. his parents had sheltered him all his life and now the are nazis every where trying to kill him because he’s a jew, but when he sees blood or hears gunshots he thinks they are hunting! I can’t stand him! At the end of the book it starts to get more exciting and your left with a cliff hanger at the end but I couldn’t enjoy this book. 3/10

Once is a sad, exciting and hard to take in kind of book. I found it very difficult to imagine what it would have been like to live in that kind of place at that time. I love this book because it is a way to explain what happened to Felix and his Family and why it should never occur again. My Favourite part of this book is when Felix tells stories to all the other children making them feel better. My favorite Character is Zelda because she is so strong for her age and she is very persistent and would put herself first even if it ment Death. I would recommend this book to anyone from ages 10+. The kind of people that would like this book would be history-lovers and people who love a good read that they can’t put down.

this was a very good book, I found it quite easy to read, it was a little sad in some parts.

it is about a little boy named Felix and a 6 year old girl named Zelda, Felix lives in Poland. it is set in the year 1942, Felix is the son of Jewish parents who put him in a orphanage his parents run a bookshop in Poland. The Nazis are taking all the Jews to sending them to Concentration Camps and they are trying to kill all of the Jews, if you dont like books about this kind of thing, its probably not the best book to read.
    i enjoyed reading it so I think i would rate it a 8/10 🙂

This is a book about a boy and his journey to find his parents.

The boy’s name is Felix. Felix lives in Poland. The year is 1942. Felix is the son of Jewish parents who run a bookshop in Poland. The Germans are under Hitler’s control and are rounding up Jews to send to Death Camps.

The story begins in an orphanage in Poland where Felix has lived for three years and eight months, after his parents could no longer afford to keep him. They said they would come back for him when they had got over their financial problems.

The orphanage is run by nuns. One night at dinner when Felix is collecting his bowl from Mother Minka, the head nun, he sees something floating in his soup bowl that could mean savior from the orphanage! There then begins a perilous journey to find his parents on which Felix meets new friends and allies to help him through the rough times ahead.

This book tells more than Felix’s story. It is an amazingly powerful and tense recount of what people would have felt and experienced when the Nazis were in power. I found this book very moving.

I read this book for Lit Circles. And this is a really good book. Straight away the book was interesting and kept you wondering about what was going to happen next. Felix is completely unaware about what is really happening and assumes that bad things that happen, are actually good. I can relate this book to Boy Overboard. The theme of the Natzis and riots. Although I have never been in the same position as Felix, I can imagine what he would be feeling and I be feeling the same. I think that he is really worried about people finding out that he is not really an orphan. Morris Gleitzman really describes the characters opinions and feelings so you can really put your self in their shoes. The author uses lots of adjectives so you can picture what is happening in your head. This makes the book so much more interesting and I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I feel like I am apart of the book, and every dangerous and scary situation that Felix, Barney and the others are in, I feel like I am there. I thought Felix had great courage to be prepared to leave Barney and Zelda when they had the opportunity to, after finding out that Zelda’s father was a Nazi solider. I think the Zelda and Felix will be best friends forever, after both of them surviving the jump off the train. I have truly enjoyed this book and it would have to be on e of the most engaging and interesting books I have ever red. I would recommend this book for people over the age of 12. His personality was outlined perfectly and I felt the feelings he did. I felt his strong fears, his incredible and wild imagination, his powerful courage and most of all, his on-going hope. However, my favourite character was Barney because of his generosity and dedication to others. I often wondered about his decisions and if he ever considered leaving the children to seek freedom for himself. But, somehow I think he wouldn’t ever consider this. I believe that his sense of guilt would send him back to the helpless kids. Whilst reading this book, I found it extremely hard to put it down and my eyes were glued to the pages.
This book also inspired my interest in The Holocaust. ‘Once’ is a deep book, so I would recommend it for people who are 12-18. I am so excited to read the next book ‘Then.’ I predict that Felix and Zelda will live happily together, but maybe get caught by the Nazis again. I have a big hope that Felix will find his parents, but I highly doubt this will happen in the difficult circumstances. I have loved this book and could call it one of my favourites. I would rate it 10/10.

I loved the numerous times Felix helps and cares for Zelda. I don’t think Zelda actually realises how lucky she is to have Felix as a friend. If they didn’t have each other they would probably already be dead. There probably wasn’t one event that stood out the most for me in this book. The whole book was always exciting and Morris Gleitzman captured what jews went through really well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is very interested in history and wants to know how the Nazi’s treated the jews and what the Jews were treated like. I give the book a 9/10 and it is probably suited for ages 10 and up. Overall I loved this book and could easily read it again and again. I love Zelda’s sense of humor, she is an amazing funny girl, and she is like a sister to Felix. This story basically sums up life for Jews in hiding. It is horrible. And it is worse in a Concentration Camp. I think that it really puts into perspective how scary it was in this time and how cruel the Nazi soldiers were in this time. I would definitely recommend this book to others. I think that the author was really clever the way he ended this book as it leads into the next book ‘Then’, which means you just have to get your hands on the next book to be able to read what happens to Felix, Zelda and the other characters. Now that I have read the book ‘Once’ I am really keen to read ‘Then’. This book is very sad but at the same time quite scary. This really makes you think about how all the Jews would have been feeling at this time if you were in Felix or Zelda’s position. By reading this book you can really see how dangerous things were for the Jews in this time. Felix and Zelda like to take a lot of risks and are prepared to risk their life for others close to them. I enjoyed doing my activity this week because I was able to choose some of my favourite parts of the section. I also enjoyed reading this section of the book as it was very intense at times especially the parts when the Nazis found Felix when he was in a bedroom, looking at books but soon fell asleep. This gave the Nazi’s time to roam around, looking for other Jewish people, hiding around. It was also very intense when a Nazi then knew that Zelda’s father was a Nazi and Barney was telling him about it all. Then, that Nazi let them two go but they refused to and came on the train. I think that later on, when Felix, Zelda and Chaya jumped off the train was a HUGE risk. I think it was very silly of them to go and risk their lives to do something when they could get killed!!!! Luckily, they didn’t and were safe in the meadows. Although it was a pretty bad decision, I still think that was what I would’ve done because I wouldn’t want to be stuck on the train, and having to die anyway. That was their only chance to escape although it was a risk. I really want to read the next book and I have enjoyed reading this book very much!!!

I am beginning to not like this book. Its starting to get really predictable and I hate books like that. I am so glad the Felix had realised that is parents probably are dead. He is my favourite character because I think that he treats Zelda as if she were his daughter to something, he looks after her so well and will put himself in danger to help her. I really want to read Then to figure out what happens next in Felix’s journey. I was slightly disappointed with the authors choices, eg: Zelda getting sick was so predictable and typical it ruined the book for me. Overall the book was okay, it was really exciting in different parts, and in some parts it was really predictable and boring.

I loved learning about felix’s imagination & how he calmed & made Zelda happy when he told stories to her. It shows how nieve he was to what was going on & why the soldiers kept targeting him as well as others. It also shows us that maybe the people really were nieve & didn’t understand what was going on so they told stories to make the story come true & alive. My favourite character was Zelda as she was usually always bright & confident when she spoke to others. I loved this book but think people should read it from the age of 11 on.

It is a really strong book, and has a strong message. I loved this book it was one of my favorites. It was set in Germany during World War II. It was about the friendship of two friends called Felix and Zelda. I have loved this book for a long time. I was amazed to find it had my name in it. My favorite part was when Felix would make up stories to make the other little children happy. My favorite character was Zelda because, she was a very mischievous little girl. She is only 6 years old and is already surviving in war. I can relate to Felix, because I love telling stories to other people and, he loves English and so do I. I hate the part where Zelda is lying down on the ground at the start of the book, her house was burnt and all her chickens where shot down dead. Zelda was badly hurt though. I would change the part where Felix runs into the Nazi and the Nazis find the cellar to where the children and take them to the “Death Camp”. This book is for people who like a bit of history, and like serious things. I would recommend this book to people who are ready to get the tissues and bawl their eyes out!!!

Its really sad at some times because the Nazi’s are really mean to the Jews. I think that everyone should read this book and then read the following book ‘Then’.

My favourite character was Felix because he was always so brave and had such a good imagination to take Zelda’s mind off things. I don’t have a least favourite part of the book but there was many parts in the book were I was shocked of what happened, and many parts were so sad. If you like books all about the past, and history then I would reccomend this book, even if you don’t know anything about it, then read it to get a better understanding. I loved this book and the next night I was reading the following book, ‘Then’.

  169. Hi,
I am going to review a book called “Once”.
This book is about a young child called Felix and he is on a search to find his parents. This story was set in Germany and Poland. Felix has Jewish parents who own a bookshop in Poland. Felix has been living in an orphanage in Poland and his parents said they would come back for him when they got more money. One night at dinner he saw something floating in his soup bowl that could mean that he is free from the orphanage! There, he begins his search to find his parents, while on the way he met a new friend, Zelda. She had lost her parents too. Together they push through to the end. My favourite character would have to be Felix, because he never gave up, and whatever he put his mind to he tried his best to complete. I found this book very inspiring and it will be a book that I will remember forever!

  171. The first book by Morris Gleitzman and I thought it was beautiful although I would’ve liked another ending. Felix is such a strong character with so much to live for but so much trying to stop him. During the time of the Holocaust when many Jews were being killed Felix escapes from an orphanage to try and find his parents and he is confronted with many troubles. Good read!

  172. Just recently I have finished reading a book called “Once & Then” By Morris Gleitzman. Once, and Then, are actually two books, but “Once” is what happens first in the story, and “Then” just continues the story to bring it to an ending.

This book is mainly about a Jewish child that was in an orphanage, and he escapes to try and find his parents. He encounters many problems on his way, because the story takes place during the time, of when Hitler and the Nazi’s were trying to make a ‘Perfect Race’ and killing people who were Jewish.

I thoroughly enjoyed knowing about history from the past, and how much some people had to go though on a regular basis, just to survive and keep their families safe.

Overall, this book is a must read!

He wants to go and look for his parents but it’s too dangerous. Felix gets put in a orphanage, he thinks that his parents have done this though so they can get out of their troubles. The rest is up to you to read though! It’s so good. So I recommend it to you!

Morris Gleitzman has written many great books including this one which would be one of the best! I encourage you to read it if you haven’t done so yet.

Felix is Jewish and is living in Poland during the holocaust. He does not understand what is going on though. He avoids the truth imaging better things than what could be happening. When Felix finds a carrot in his soup, he believes it is a sign from his parents and escapes from the orphanage to find them. he does not understand that his country is at war and that as he is a Jew, so therefor is in great danger.

This book is quite adventurous and hard to put done once started but overall its fantastic!

For literature circles i am reading “Once”, and it is about a small jew called felix and he lives in an orphanage, he receives a full carrot in his soup, he thinks it is a sign from his mum and dad, he is so excited that the next day he sees a truck coming, obviously thinking that it was his mum and dad he got sad when it was men in uniforms and they were burning all the jewish books so he sneaks out of the orphanage and goes on this adventure and finds lots of things such as food, water, friendships, the german nazis and he find love and friendship. Felix doesn’t know what happens to jews when they run away so he is in for an adventure. I can’t relate to any of the characters. So far it has been a really fantastic book, i love this book. i recommend this to everyone because it is a book that really gets you emotional that you will never want to put down. i am still reading it so i will tell you more once i am further in the book or once i have finished it.

  192. When I started reading Once, I couldn’t put the book down. It was a page turner like no other. It is about a young Jewish boy who has to be put in an orphanage to be protected from the danger outside caused by Hitler. The young boy, Felix, is stuck in the orphanage while his parents are outside being harassed by the Nazi soldiers. He finds a carrot in his soup one day, which is very rare. He believes that this is a sign that he has to go out and find his parents. So he did. While he is out he sees things that are terrible, but has no clue about whats happening. He doesn’t understand how dangerous it is, but he will soon find out. Join Felix on his quest to find his parents and discover what is happening to the other Jewish people. I recommend this book because it is amazing and you will be touched by Felix and his innocents, just as much as I was. START READING!!!!

The book is about a young jewish kid living in poland during the holocaust. This boy, Felix, doesn’t know whats going on. He has an extremely creative imagination and uses it to avoid the truth. Felix was taken to a catholic orphanage by his parents they told him they’d come and get him later. That was four years ago and when some Nazi soldiers come and start burning the books he much adores he decides it’s time to find them. My favourite character was the young girl Felix met on his journey, Zelda. Anyone ages 10 and older could enjoy this book and i reccomend that you give it a go.

  195. With all the millions of books and movies, shows and articles, true stories and documentaries about the second world war out there, you may ask yourself “What is the point of reading a book about something that has been covered on so many different levels?” You would be right to ask yourself this but the way “Once” is written makes this book original and tells the story of the second world war in a way you will never forget. I first read this book in grade 6. Back then, I had no idea what the second world war was about. I knew Hitler was involved, but not who was targeted, why it hapenned and what hapenned to all the prisoners.
If you have little knowledge of the second world war, then read this book. It is written from the eyes of a young boy who knows nothing about the second world war even though he is living in it. You learn about the war through his experiences and realisations as he suddenly begins to understand what is hapenning around him.
Felix lives in a Polish orphanage. He doesn’t know that he has been left there to protect him from the Nazi’s as his parents just left him there nealy four years before hand. When Felix finds a carrot in his soup, he believes it is a sign from his parents and escapes from the orphanage to find them. Little does he know that the country is at war and that as he is a Jew, he is in great danger.
I have read this book three times and each time I have enjoyed it more and more. It ended rather abruptly which I was very disappointed about until I found out that Morris Gleitzman has written a sequel to it called “Then”. I highly reccommend “Once” as it is very easy to read, gripping, heart wrenching and informative.

  203. This quickly became my favourite Morris Gleitzman book although I would have liked another ending. Looking at the world through the eyes of an innocent boy gives this book a different perspective when compared to many other books set in this period. Felix’s naivety to the realities and danger surrounding him makes you want to shake him at times but simultaneously you also want to protect him from the evils that he’s facing. His eternal optimism keeps you hoping that everything will end the way Felix expects it to.
