The blog for books and movies

This is the second story of Felix and Zelda.

They escaped from the Nazis but how long can they now survive when there are so many people ready to hand them over for a reward?

Thanks to the courage of a kind, brave woman they are able to hide for a time in the open, but Felix knows he has a distinguishing feature that identifies him as a Jew.

  2. my favourite book! this book is one of the saddest, fuuniest, loving books in this world. it is the second book in the once series. this is my favourite book in the whole series! it is about a bot named felix and he meets this girl zelda. but they are jewish but hitler is not happy. you never want to put the book down and it. always bring tears in your eyes. it terrible because it is what most likely happened to some kids during this time.
i 10000% recommend this book to everyone any age because it is a really good eye opener to kids and it show how lucky we are to be in this world that we are in today. ( even with crona)

  3. Then by Morris Gleitzman is such a good book and i love it as much as the first one. the detail and story line is so realistic you could think it could be an exact true story rather then just based off events. Then full on sad and an intense book all in one. My favourite character is probably Felix so far because he never gives up and stays loyal. My least favourite part in the book is when someone dies (no spoilers), but my favourite part of the book was in the is just the information that lyes between the lines. again i recommend this series for ages 10+ and this book is definitely a 10/10

He has lived in an orphanage since the war first begun and he knew nothing about the outside world and the hatrid towards jewish people, he encounters a younger girl (Zelda) which parents where killed by polish resistance is what Felix believes. He looks after the young girl and there friendship grows very strong as the embark on a journey in Poland. This was pretty much the best book I have ever read. It is so good.
At some times it is a bit emotional and sad. It has really strong words and really makes you feel really sorry for the Jews.
I have read this book so many times and that is not normal for me. I really love books like that. It also gives you a bit of an idea of what it was like back then for the Jews.
I felt really sorry for the characters and I was crying while reading it because it was so sad and emotional.
The Author (Morris Gleitzman) is my favourite author because he uses such strong words and his books are just so entertaining to read.
Anyway I would recommend this book for people 12 years and older.
    I rate this book 8/10.

After I read once, I immediately looked for the second book then, I hoped it would be just as good. It was even better! I really enjoyed it.
Then continues on from the first book called once. It’s about a boy named Felix and a girl named Zelda. They both fight to stay alive through world war 2, coming across challenges that you wouldn’t think anyone that young would come across. You go through another extraordinary journey of Felix’s perspective through the second stage ( book 2) of world war 2 I definitely recommend this book to everyone that loves thrilling and breathtaking stories

Be safe forever. Then the Nazis came. My name is Felix. This is our story.” This book is amazing you can never put it down and you just want to keep on reading until you have finished the book entirely. I strongly recommend this book I rate it a 10/10. I loved this book a lot. I recommend people 10+ to read this book and the whole series after it.

My favourite Character is Felix because he is caring about Zelda on the journey and is helping her get through it, and sticking up for her. My least part of the book is were they see a whole with dead children in their from the Nazis. I would recommend this book to others because it is a great book to read. After reading Morris Gleitzmans previous book ‘Once’ to this book ‘Then’ this is just as heart clenching, intensified, gorgeous book as the first of the series the whole series being the best books I have ever read. It continues to give you an insight to WW1 as the suspense builds up so does the willingness to finish the book. It is bound to give you many tears mixed in with the occasional laugh. It is a beautifully written book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good read.

  26. – This book is the sequel to the first book (Once). I think that both book are absolutely amazing and powerful but I would recommend to read the first book before you read this one. This book is about when Felix and Zelda flee from a death camp where all Jews are being kept as hitlers plan to run the world. As it becomes harder and harder to run away Felix and Zelda can trust no one and in the end they get to a town and find a lady who is happy to look after the kids but can they trust her?… As money is scarce and so is food almost everyone would hand in jews in return for a reward that could be a lot of money. In the end I would highly recommend this book for 12 -18 year olds as you will be still up in the morning reading it waiting for something to happen that you didn’t think would. I thought this book was so good because i couldn’t relate to the characters and it made me ask myself questions like…”If i was in that position, what would i have done?” I reccomend this book to everyone! But I advise you to read the first one (Once) so you understand the idea of the book. Once was the prequel to this book and is just as great so make sure you get that one down so you can read the whole trilogy.

The book “Then” which was written by the author Morris Gleitzman is a wonderful book that definitely tugs on a few heartstrings. The emotion, and intense story of Zelda and Felix is unimaginable. Trying to be a normal child was never an option all that was left was to try to survive. Felix was a caring, determined, innocent and persistent person who fights for his life. He looks out for others especially Zelda. War destroys the lives of others and all that is left is survival. It’s never finished until their is only one man left standing. This book tells the story of war, adventure and the ultimate sacrifice that could make or break the chances of survival. The Nazi’s are taking over and are ruining the lives of others.
I would recommend this book to those who want a story that is powerful, intense and that can make you think twice about what you have rather than what you do not.

It was gripping, and with every new page, I felt more and more guilty, because I was supposed to be playing with my sister, but I couldn’t! I couldn’t just leave in the middle of the most important 20 chapters! I love the way that whenever anyone dies, Felix says “Oh.” The only thing I HATE is the ending. It is so unsatisfying and annoying! Either way, I did love this book, and I think that everyone should read it, as long as they are above the age of 12, because there are some gruesome scenes in the novel. I am going to rate this book only ★★★★☆, because I didn’t like the ending.

Just innocent kids had to go through all these things, they couldn’t even help being who the are. When you read a book like this, you put yourself in their shoes. It is mighty powerful and emotional. You feel you are living through these tough times with these kids, Zelda and felix. it is pretty graphic in some parts of the book, but thats when you really realize how they were treated. You cry because of the bad things that happen and you smile, from the promises that are mad. i would rate this book 11/10. Age group: 10+.

  52. Then is the Sequel to the powerful book, Once, but is equally powerful. This book picks up from where the first book ended, with narrator Felix and his companion Zelda. Felix and zelda flee from a death-camp–bound boxcar. In the course of their flight there is always the danger of being turned in to the Nazis for a reward, as well as the worry of being shot or starving to death. Being a book lover, Felix takes comfort in the humorous tales of his favorite author, Richmal Crompton, a British writer. These stories provide a ray of hope for felix and Zelda especially Felix. As these give a sense of safety and remind them how wonderful life was before the war.

This book is so tense your just gripping the pages and almost reading ahead because your so desperate to find out what happens next! It’s just an amazing story and you can’t actually get your head around the thought that this is actually what happened! Hitler was a sick man and so were the Nazis. There were so little people that survived and so many that were killed or tortured. The other books in this series are Once and Now. The order of the series is Once, Then and Now. It actually dosen’t matter what order you read them in because they make sense all the same. But it is good to read them in order as the stories make more sense! I recommend this to Kids 11 and up as it is a really strong story and some may find it a little overwhelming.

This is by far the best out of the three book series I think most of the drama happens here. I wish I was Felix and I could feel, smell, see, what he is doing I can’t imagine what poor little Zelda’s feeling in this situation small, venerable, clueless she has absolutely no idea whats going on why there hiding on the run and Felix is pretty clueless himself. My favorite character in the book is Gina because she is so kind and caring to take two on the run Jews in when she is at an extremely high risk in doing so. I feel so sorry for the pig, dog, and chooks being taken away like that and I think that that Felix and Zelda are very lucky for not being found out about when the Germans were searching the barn as they were hiding in the hay and not being shot at. I nearly was in tears at the end of this book and was thankful I was not part of a situation like that. The sequel now is no where near as good as the first two but is a great, smart, clever way to finish up the three part series. I highly recommend these books to anyone 10 and up ready for a great read that they can’t put down. 🙂

This book is also really sad because Felix has no idea what is going on and is running around hiding for many days to find his parents but he doesn’t know what he is really hiding from, he thinks he is hiding from the Nazi’s because his family own’s a jewish book store. Sometime’s I think how would he know where and how to hide so well and as well as that keep care of a little girl Zelda. I am really looking forward to reading this book again. They are so touching and I love reading about history and even though its a fiction book it is based on things that really happened and it makes it seem so much sadder. The ending was so sad I didn’t expect it to happen. My favourite character is Felix because he is so Brave and strong and does anything to protect Zelda. I love learning about History and so I loved this book. I highly recommend this book for everyone even if you don’t like history the story is still written so well.

    Hi everybody,
This is the most gripping, heart racing book i’ve ever read and it nearly put me to tears. It really makes me think about the things that happen out of our perfect lives and thinking about what some people go through. It is really horrible. I rate this book 8.5/10.

this is one of the best books ive read in a long time. It is such a good book because everything in it you can imagine, and nothing in it is made up. It makes you think twice about what really happens out there in the world. I would recommend this book to grade 6 s and up becasue some kids might find the series abit scary. 10/10.

  64. Then is the second book in the series called Once. Then is better then the second book because you know who all the characters are and what has happened in the past. The best part in the book is when Felix, Zelda and another child called Chaya jump off the train and escape.
My favorite character is Zelda, because she has become stronger and braver in the this book. She is doing things for herself instead of asking Felix. I would change the part where Zelda gets hung. I bawled my eyes out. I would change the part where Zelda dies, and there friend. It’s so sad because Felix has to live with his friends wife, but at least that is a happy thing for him. I would reccomend this book to people, who know a bit about war. It’s really to read so anyone can read it.

  65. Then is a great book! It really touches you and makes you feel grateful that is wasn’t you that was out there, hiding from the Nazi’s. The kids are very brave and strong to keep on going through tough and scary times! It really makes you think about life was back then and how lucky you are now to be living in a free country and no one chasing after you. It is a great book and I strongly recommend it to everybody!

  66. Then is a great book. It is the follow up to ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman and once again he has written an amazing book. Then is such an amazing story and although it is fictional, there are probably many stories just like it. I loved reading about the Nazi’s and the Jews and I thought that it was very interesting. I also liked this book because it was about the history of WWII and it was very informative. Morris Gleitzman is a great author and this book is amazing. Start reading NOW! You won’t regret it.

  67. Then is such a heart gripping book.

Then makes you put your feet in to their shoes and makes you wonder what it would of been like for them, and once you have felt what it would be like for them it just breaks your heart.

It breaks your heart imagining what it would of been like for these two kids in such terrible and horrendous conditions and living conditions.

They run in fear all the time for nothing these poor innocent kids had no right to be treated like this. It is appalling and horrendous.

But it is still a great read for basically everyone you may think that you won’t like it but once you get in to it you GET in to it. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did 😥 🙂

  68. I read this book and immediately liked it. It was so confronting and I really feel for Felix and the hardships he faces with his friend Zelda. I loved it because you get an inside about history from the past and how many Jewish people had to sacrifice so much and go through so much just to stay alive

  69. ust recently I have finished reading a book called “Once & Then” By Morris Gleitzman. Once, and Then, are actually two books, but “Once” is what happens first in the story, and “Then” just continues the story to bring it to an ending.

This book is mainly about a Jewish child that was in an orphanage, and he escapes to try and find his parents. He encounters many problems on his way, because the story takes place during the time, of when Hitler and the Nazi’s were trying to make a ‘Perfect Race’ and killing people who were Jewish.

I thoroughly enjoyed knowing about history from the past, and how much some people had to go though on a regular basis, just to survive and keep their families safe.

Overall, this book is a must read!

  70. This book is a very gripping story about a boy called Felix and a girl called Zelda. They have both lost their parents in the war and are now looking for new ones. It seems like all hope is lost until they meet a lovely women called Genia. Genia has a husband who is a nazi but she still lovingly takes in Felix and Zelda. After a long time Genia’s husband comes back and sees Felix and Zelda, at first he sis angry and wants nothing to do with them but then he finds out that their parents are dead and regretfully accepts them. I don’t know how this story is going to end up but i am very excited to find out. This is a great book if you like a thrilling story about war and peace.

Then is about how Felix and Zelda have both lost there parents and try to find new ones then they meet Genia. Genia is a nice old lady who has a husband who is a nazi. In THEN he comes back to see Genia and sees Zelda and felix he is very confused until he finds out that there parents are dead, but he still accepts them. I am not sure how the story will end but i am difinitely looking forward to reading FINALLY (the third book of the series)

  72. Gosh…Then is the most heart touching book i have ever read. The prequel once starts the amazing journey of young boy Felix and adorable little Zelda. The two children embark on a journey to find Felix’s parents. The journey is so sad, funny and very touching. But wait till you read Then. it finishes the journey of the young kids. The things they have to go through is unbelivable. After i read the book i cried for ages. I would reccomend it for people who love stories told from childrens perspective. Its very sad so stock up on heaps of tissues. I wouldn’t reccomend the book for children under the age of 10, they wouldn’t really understand the storyline. HAVE FUN READING IT. xx 5/5 for sure.xx

  74. A book that I would recommend to everyone is called ‘Then’. It is the sequel to ‘Once’ and is soooooo sad. i cried so much. Its about how Felix and Zelda try to find new parents too look after them and save them from the Nazis.Dazed with hunger and exhaustion, they seek shelter in the woods, stumble upon a pit filled with machine-gunned children, evade a local man collecting Jews for bounty, and are captured by a farmer who locks them in a barn with her pig. Fortunately, the farmer despises German soldiers somewhat more than she hates Jews, and offers the children refuge, along with a slim chance of survival.Genia, provides a much-needed reference point of decency in this world turned upside down. As all three struggle to survive, the story leads to an almost unbearable ending, described in a voice so gentle and drained of emotion that I had to go back and read it a second time to be sure I hadn’t misunderstood.
A fabulous book that will leave you wanting more and you will read it again and again to make sure that you read right.
    I rate it a 1000000/10

  76. There is a sequel to the Morris Gleitzman book Once called Then.
It is Felix’s journey continued. In this book Felix is still trying to avoid the Nazi’s, hiding his true jewish identity. But one kid threatens to reveal his secret and Felix and his family are in danger. If you’ve read Once and enjoyed it then definetly read the second one. If you read Once but didn’t like it so much, consider reading the next book. It is an enjoyable book i thought and anyone who reads it would have to love the little girl Zelda.

I thought this book was so good because i couldn’t relate to the characters and it made me ask myself questions like…”If i was in that position, what would i have done?” I reccomend this book to everyone! But I advise you to read the first one (Once) so you understand the idea of the book.
