The blog for books and movies

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma,

and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries?

If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend.

But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace.

And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil – and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children.

Is Valentine behind the killings – and if he is, what is he trying to do?

When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace.

How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

  1. I thought that this was a really fun read. Whilst, the writing wasn’t excellent the storyline was enjoyable and it was definitely a page-turner. I liked the main character Clary – I thought that she was brave and clever without being unrealistic and annoying. I also liked the author’s illustration of Jace and Clary’s relationship. My favourite part of the book is when Cary and Jace visit the greenhouse in Jace’s ‘Shadow Hunter’ home. However, you’ll have to read it to find out why! If I could change this book I would definitely change the ending. The twist was unpleasant and had me feeling a little bit ambivalent about starting the next book. I would definitely recommend this book to others but I would warn them not to have their expectations too high. I think people who are looking for a fun, easy read who like sci-fi type books will like this book.

City of ashes by Classandra Clare
The second book in the mortal instrument series. Clary is haunted by her past. Jace and clary were falling for each other until a major bombshell is dropped. Clary has been forced to move on with her life after her evil father, Valentine returns. Maybe if her mother wasn’t still in a magical coma maybe she wouldn’t be apart of this mythical world. Clary and her best friend Simon could go back to being best friends but Simon wants their relationship to be more. But why is Clary staying. Is is because of her mother or someone else…..
I would dearly recommend this captivating book and the rest of the series as you are immediately drawn to it if you love mythical worlds. Be expected to see many plot twists with Cassandra Clare. This is a great read for those 13 and up. So please go grab this book and get sucked into it. (Before you get sucked into this book, make sure you have had prior experience with fighting/killing demons)

I loved this book city of Ashes! I loved this book because it is a great follow up from city of bones which is another great book. In this book Clary is struggling with her feeling for both Simon and Jace, she also has to overcome many hardships that stop her from reaching her goal of waking up her mother and finding out about the secret world that was kept from her. In this book you get to see more of Magnus Bane and because you saw more of him it made him my favourite character in this book. l liked Magnus because he is so cool, funny and l think he would be a great friend to have. I would recommend this book to anyone because it is interesting and has many twists and turn. I would give this book a 8/10.

  4. The second book in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Ashes, was really good also. So many crazy events happen, and not to spoil anything but when a beloved character becomes a vampire, that was my favourite part. Also, when Clay battles with her dad on a huge ship and she tries to kill him. It’s a dark fantasy book and it really is impossible to put down this book. My favourite character is, and will always be, Jace. There’s a lot of romance in this book and Jace was a big part of all the romance. He was still very loyal, funny, caring and such a lovable character. I could relate to Clary and Jace a bit in this book once again, because I would also go to great lengths to save family and friends. There’s no bad parts in the book, only good ones, so I wouldn’t change a thing. I would 100% recommend this book to others because it’s so amazing and hard to put down once you get to the action. The type of person who would like this book is someone who liked the first book (City of Bones) or who generally likes the dark fantasy, action, romance genres mixed into one amazing series.

  5. The City of Ashes is an amazing book! I first read City of Bones and was pulled into straight away. I was blown away of how Cassie Clare wrote this book, it is my favourite in the series, and how she was able to write her words making it feel like you are in the book. My favourite characters would have to be Simon and Jace. Simon because even though Clary is in love with her newfound brother Jace, he still sticks up for her, and as they become closer, Clary and Simon, he begins to question his feelings for her. He is a strong and loyal person and has been able to cope with every he and Clary have been put through, especially when he gets Turned….. whoops to far! I also like Jace because, he believes he has to save the world and is in love with the idea of dying. Even as he saw his father “killed” he was still strong and determind to get on with his life. He also treats Clary right by knowing her strength and not holding her like she’s a breakable porcelain doll. My favourite part in this book is the fight on the boat because that is when everyone is together fighting and many secrets are revealed, even though the characters don’t realise them until the next book. I would recommend this book (and the series) to ages 12+ and I would rate the book 10/10!!!

I really liked this book, because there are not too many books where the character wishes that EVERYTHING would return as it used to be, after discovering a fantasy world. But Clary Fray is one of those people. My favourite part of the book was when they had to enter the faire kingdom, as I thought it was cleverly written. My least favourite part or parts was the amount of time Jace was locked up. He seemed to be imprisoned for most of the book. I would recommend this book to others as it is a great read, but read the first one (city of bones) first, otherwise it’s too hard to follow. I would give City Of Ashes a 4 out of 5 stars.

City of Ashes is the second installment of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. It is about a teenage girl named Clary Fray, who has discovered that she is a demon-slaying, Shadowhunter. Her mother, Jocelyn, is still in a coma, Clary and Simon are becoming more than friends, but she still can’t deny her feelings for her newfound brother, Jace. She is on the hunt for a rouge shadowhunter, Valentine, who just so happens to be her father.

This is an awesome sequel to the book City of Bones. I have really enjoyed this series so far, as it is full of action, fantasy, romance, and its a little bit funny too. I think that this series is best suited to people 13+ I easily rate it a 10/10, and I can’t wait to read more in the series!!

  9. The city of ashes is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is the second book of the series and has some of the first books questions answered but in there place new questions are left. It is a mystery/romance/comedy/action/fantasy and has a little bit for everyone in it. If you like twilight you’ll love this. I recommend it to anyone 14 and up. And rate it 4.5 stars out of 5. Read it you won’t regret it.

  10. Clary Fray is having some major issues. Her best friend, Simon, is falling in love with her; her bad-boy crush, Jace, just might be her brother; her mom is in the hospital in a coma — oh, and did we mention that her dad is summoning an army of demons in a plot to take over the world?
It’s enough to make any girl want to scream, but Clary isn’t just any girl — she’s a Shadowhunting demon slayer, and in Cassandra Clare’s new book, City of Ashes, her life gets a lot more complicated.

  11. City of ashes is the GREAT book following city of bones. Join Clary and her friends as she deals with lots of problems such as understanding faeries, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, the silent brothers, Valentines evil plans and her feelings for Jace and Simon. As Clary comes to turns with her shadowhunter blood she discovers new powers that her and Jace have. Together with her friends and family as well as the clave, they try to get the mortal instruments back from Valentine before he takes over the world. I absolutley loved this book and everything about it. I couldn’t put it down until i finished it. At times i even thought i was going to cry. I recommend this book to whoever has read city of bones as you have to read that first to understand this.

    Enjoy!

City of Ashes – By Cassandra Clare.

The second book in THE BEST SERIES EVER.
The series is called The Mortal Instruments.
This is the sequel to City of Bones, and is equally jam packed with laughs and quirky jokes involving aqua trucks and sonic the hedgehog (YOU HAVE TO READ IT TO GET THOSE!)
Continues to follow the story of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Alec, Simon, Magnus Bane (aka. the coolest warlock ever) and new characters.
Instantly a hit, you will want to read it over and over again!
    Enjoy
