The director aims to show the
expressions of the characters and evidence of Maori
culture. In Whale Rider every Maori element and
symbol is emphasised. What I believe the message is, is
that we should hold onto our cultural identity but question
what traditions are worth keeping. In Pai’s speech scene
it is also telling us about what Pai believes is important
    about leadership.

The whale rider is a emotional story about the power of the younger generations and how they can change the history and traditions of a tribe. This movie is very inspirational and shows how most girls are disadvantaged and don’t get to show the qualities they have of becoming a strong chief that could one day lead their tribe. Pikea (the main character in the movie) tries to prove to Paka (her grandfather) that she can do what her twin brother (that died when she was born) was going to do and become the next chief.

  5. I really enjoyed this movie and I have learnt a lot about the Maori culture and traditions. The young girl Pai has been to hell and back in her lifetime having losing her mother and twin brother, and her dad taking off to Europe. She is left to her grandparents. Her grandfather Koro believes when she was born things went wrong for her family. I love all the characters because they are all so different. Koro has a new leader staring him in the eyes yet he still doesn’t notice. I enjoyed the movie and rate it 8/10.

Whale rider is such a great movie. It is about a young girl called Pikea, she is the daughter of a leader. Her mother and twin brother die in child birth, therefore making no obvious new leader. Pikea is not considered as she lives in a male dominated area and must prove herself to even become an option for the new leader.

My favourite character is Pikea, she is a young independent girl, she believes in herself and stands up for what she believes in. She is cheeky yet responsible. She knows she is worthy of becoming the new leader of her community and in the end she does just that.

The movie is really touching and meaningful, it teaches us about the Maori culture and highlights the importance and reality of gender equality. In the movie there is many hidden symbols and objects that are meaningful in that culture and in the movie.

My favourite part of the movie is near the end when Pikea returns home riding a whale, and you can see that Koro has made his final decision that she is the rightful leader and will take over.

I would recommend this movie to anyone over 10 for the best understanding but it is not inappropriate for younger ages!

The movie is mesmerising and really well written. The characters are great and suit every individual and the main character Paikea plays the role so well and is such a strong and motivational person to aspire to. It’s an emotional movie but is so amazing. I would 100% recommend it to anyone who loves just a really great movie. Definitely a 10/10

  9. I recommend the movie ‘Whale Rider’. This movie is a very emotional movie about a girl named Paikea who when she was born, her twin brother and mother died. After this incident, Paikea was considered a curse toward the family. Her grandfather really wanted to have a boy instead of a girl as it is known for a boy to become the next leader of the community. Pike wanted to change that tradition and fought for her rights to becoming the first leader that was a girl. This movie is very touching and moving. I rate it an 8/10 and recommend it to ages 13+.

Whale rider was a really great but a very emotional and touching movie. The most interesting bit about the movie was to see the Maori culture. The movie was about a girl named Paikea that has determination, strength and shows that she is a good leader. When Paikea was born her mum and brother died. Paikea grandfather (Koro) thinks that Paikea does not have what it takes to become a leader, but could Paikea prove him wrong. I would recommend this movie to everyone because its and amazing movie to watch

Whale Rider was a great movie to watch. The plot was interesting and it was very interesting to see the Maori culture. It is also a very interesting movie, that has a strong emotional plot. Paikea is inspiring character that was very great to watch. Paikea or shortened to Pai, wants to be a great leader, but because she is a girl and in her culture, Maori, it is the boys who are the leaders. Pai’s grandfather loves her, but really does wish she was a boy. Pai is upset about this but doesnt let her hold her back, instead it makes her more determined to prove everyone wrong. In the Pai was a great leader. This is a great movie to watch and to learn lots from. I recommend this movie to people from 12-14!!!!

Whale Rider is a beautiful movie about a little New Zealand girl who lives with her grandparents. It tells the story of the girl who spoke to the whales in a funny family, loving filled way. Pai is the name of the girl and she is an animal lover and her family have great relations to the whales. When the whales beach themselves it is a sad tragedy for the whole family and there is no explanation for the event however Pai has a way to solve it. Pai fights some social troubles such as sexism and ageism. However she overcomes every problem thrown at her and I think thats why the movie is so appealing to girls our age because we can relate to Pai and possibly see a little bit of ourselves in her. Its and adorable film and I highly recommend watching it to everyone with their families. 9/10

I love Paikea in this movie because she is so determined, strong minded and funny and is so caring for the wales. I could not stop crying when she sacrificed her life for the whales… and I never cry in movies. My favourite quote of the movie is “paka. The film ‘Whale Rider’ directed by Niki Caro helps us to understand the Maori communities connection to and protection of their environment. ‘Whale Rider’ also helps us to understand the Maori communities culture and how much it means to them. ‘Whale Rider’ is an emotional film and profoundly entertaining as well as being exciting. My favourite character in this film is Paikea, as she is a great role model and has numerous leadership qualities. Paikea never gives up, instead she persists as well as being courageous and extremely brave. Paikea shows these qualities numerous times throughout the film. ‘Whale Rider’ is an eye opening film, showing us that change isn’t always a bad thing and that by persisting as well as having self belief and working hard you can achieve anything and nothing is impossible. My favourite part in the film is when Paikea is riding the whale. While she is riding the whale Paikea shows courage and bravery, she expresses this by telling the audience that she wasn’t afraid to die. I would highly recommend this movie, as it is suitable for all ages and by watching it you can gain knowledge about other cultures. I would rate this movie an 8/10.

Pai has shown me that if you know what you need to do to make things right, do it, never give up on yourself. I loved how she showed so much persistence and courage in the film, she stood up to Koro and did what she felt was best for her community. She has taught me that by showing a little bravery, can make a big difference for the people around you. Whale Rider is the most emotional movie I have ever seen. It shows so much depth in the story and only the most observant watchers can see the true depth and emotion that others can not. I have been to the actual town and the movie truly captures the essence of the place. Although before the movie I had never heard of the legend of Paikea or of the special power that the whales had over the people. Hmmmm that explains why all the greenstone shops sold greenstone whale tails.

Whale Rider (The Movie) is an emotional rollercoaster. It is incredibly entertaining with an important moral and a beautiful story. The idea of a young girl becoming a leader despite unfair traditions is a wonderful concept, sending a message that everyone has equal rights and can be the person they want to.
The character Pai lives with her grandparents, after her twin brother and mother died shortly after birth. The whole movie is based around the relationship between Koro (grandpa) and Pai, signifying that we should always accept people for who they are, and not judge others by what they look like.
Whale Rider is a great film for all ages, and I would recommend watching it.

This movie is a very informative movie about Maori culture. I watched this in class for English, and it is very emotional. A young girl called Pai is born into the Maori tradition without a mother or a twin brother (they pass away). She is brought up by her grandparents. Her grandfather who was the current leader of his tribe, really wanted a boy so he could be the next leader, and holds a grudge against Pai for it. It is a movie about gender equality within the Maori tradition. It isn’t very funny, and has some emotional parts. It is not a movie I would probably choose to watch on my own terms, and I probably won’t watch it again. I rate it 5/10.

  31. Whale Rider is a very emotional movie about a girl called Pi, who’s mother and twin brother died at childbirth. Her grandfather is the head of their tribe, and it is supposed to be the eldest son that will take on the position after him, but his son refuses, and Pi is a girl, so her grandfather doesn’t want her ruling the village. It’s all about her grandfathers search for the perfect tribal leader, and realising that he had what he wanted all along, Pi. My favourite character in the movie is definitelyPi, because she stick to what she knows, and continues to try to prove to her grandfather that she is the best option for the tribal leader, even if she is aa girl. My favourite scene is when Pi and all of the other locals are rescuing all the whales on the beach, because you really see the community come together, and work as one to save the whales. It is when Pi’s grandfather realises that Pi would be an amazing leader, and realises that going against tradition can sometimes be a good thing. I would give this movie a 7 out of 10. The best age that i could recommend this movie for is children n20 years or older. It is also a movie that adults would enjoy too.

Whale Rider is a bit sad and times but still very great.
The Grandfather is so harsh and strict but it’s just because he thinks he has to follow what is believed which is that only males can be the leader.

Paikea is definitely a positive role model for young women as she is looked down on for being a girl but she shows that no matter what gender, race etc. you can be a leader if you just believe.

I absolutely LOVED whale rider. Before this, I had never watched it, and it has made a very good first impression. Pai, a Maori girl, was named after Paikia:the Whale rider. Her grandfather Koro is the leader of the tribe and is angry that a girl has been named after the Whake Rider. He is desperate for Maori tradition to be carried on throughout future generations.
This movie is so full of culture. It shows Pai using a traditional Maori weapon: the Taiaha, and also include the Haka: a traditional maori dance.
If you are looking for lots of emotion and meaning, this is the movie for you. Paid is a young girl with a strong, caring personality, and shares a deep connection with her community and culture.

  47. Whale Rider is a movie that touches every single one of your emotions. Happy, Scary, Sad, Angry and Worried. Pai belongs to the Maori culture on the coast of New Zealand. During birth, her soon to be chief brother passed away, to her grandfather Koro’s horror. Koro was the current chief and seeing as his son had no interest in becoming chief he was hoping for his grandson to become the almighty leader of the Maori tribe. His hopes had been shattered and now all that’s left is a young bright girl that goes by the name of Pai. Pai is the main character in the film and she keeps the tension going right through to the end. Koro starts up a school for boys to train them to become chiefs. Koro had no intentions of letting Pai be chief because she was a girl. After a series of shocking events involving the whales in the legend of Paikea, the great Maori Ancestor, Koro soon sees that Pai has all of the qualities of a leader. This film will leave you crying and laughing at the same time. With many inspiring messages and morals Whale Rider is most definitely the movie to watch.

I had learnt about the tradition and what the men can do and what they can’t do and the same with the women(girls). I think that this movie is really sad and especially at the very start of the movie. My class last year didn’t actually watch the very start of the movie when Pika’s mother was giving birth to her and her twin brother was being born because of had happened. 52. The movie whale rider is definitely one of my recommendations i watched this movie earlier in the year for english and fell in love. This movie would be suitable for teenagers as it is a powerful and meaningful story, About a young girl who is treated differently because of her gender and this girl is Paikea. This movie was touching as Paikea just wanted to do what the boys were doing. But Paka got in her way as the rules were women were not meant to do these activities and he was the one to implement that rule. But the big event is at the start when her mother passes away and her Paka is not happy as Paikea was a girl this was because boys were more preferred. The inspiring part of this movie is no matter how much Paka pushes Paikea back she still stays by his side. And it just shows how much times have changed in the treatment towards women’s and girls in some countries and seeing as we go to Sacred Heart as we are all girls we should all watch it. Because we are privileged and this movie makes us realize and respect our opportunities. I would rate this a 10/10/.

At first, when I was told we were watching this movie for english I thought it would be another one of those boring educational movies but after watching the first section (we didn’t have enough time to watch the whole movie in one period) I realised I was wrong. This movie is based on a real maori legend and was filmed exactly where the legend was told, also the background cast in the film are the actual village people, so the movie is almost like the tale itself, which to me means that the directors were really passionate about the filming of this movie and that it wasn’t just a half-hearted attempt.

The movie is filled with a haunting soundtrack by Dead Can Dance’s Lisa Gerrard, including samples of traditional Maori music by Hirini Melbourne. The cinematography beautifully captures the many moods of light and shadow on mountains and sea, as well as stock footage of majestic whales. “Whale Rider” is an uplifting tale of love, loss, and courage, about tradition in the face of change, and believing in yourself.

This movie is full of morals, traditions, and strong emotions. My favourite character is Paikia, she is very stubborn and stands up for watch she knows is right. She knows what is right and she won’t let even her chief/grandpa stop her. She gets pushed around for standing up for what she knows, and does and she doesn’t back down, this is a perfect example of resilience and why I love Paikia. This demonstrates that you can maintain tradition while still accepting new things. I love the story and moral of this movie, I recommend this for male and females over 12, because it may be a bit boring or hard to understand for anyone younger. I rate this movie a 9/10 because it was great but a little boring.

Whale rider is a really good movie. We had to watch it in english, and I was pretty happy about that. It was a very emotional movie. It is a movie about a little strong and determined girl named Pai. When Pai was born her Mother died giving birth to her and her Brother. Paka (Pais grandfather) was so sure that Pai’s brother would be the new leader of the town. Pai’s brother sadly died after he was born. Paka was very disappointed about the death of Pais brother and he treats her with no respect because of that tragedy. Pai trys her hardest to show Paka that she is good enough to be the new leader but he just ignores her and tries to find a new boy leader. In the end Paka finds out that she could be the new leader and that she is good enough to be the new leader and that she should be the new leader. Pai then leads the town and everybody is happy. This movie changes the way everybody thought about ‘only a boy must run this town’. It also changes the viewers opinion of the movie. I would keep the idea about showing it to year 7s because we are not to young to know any of that stuff and we are not to old to watch that movie. I would rate this movie a 8/10.

I really enjoyed watching this movie for english this year even though it was quite sad!. The movie is about a young girl named Paikea who’s mum and brother died during child birth leaving her to grow up with her Dad and the rest of her family. One of her family members was “Koro” her grandpa, he was really tough on Pai as she was a girl meaning that she can not carry on the tradition of becoming the next leader for her community which he is desperate to find, he see’s Pai as bad luck and all Pai wants to do is to be treated equally, and she doesn’t mean to cause trouble. This movie is excellent and I definitely recommend this movie to anyone but this movie is really good when you understand it properly so it comes down to maturity. 8/10

  64. I really enjoyed this movie, the things i liked where when Pai was in the hospital and Paka apologised to her and she woke up from her coma/concussion. If I could change the ending I would make it so Hemi and Pai were bests because that would be awesome!! I would also make it so when Pai was on the whale the whale realised she was on there and took her back instead of her almost drowning in the water. If I could change one person I would change Paka because he never really believed in Pai because she was a girl and he was looking for a boy. Because Paka believed that the leader organising was handed down from oldest son. This is called patriarchal. It is a pretty unfair way of deciding, but this is what he believes. All in all i love this movie and could watch it one hundred times over. I defiantly reccoment this movie to others. Great movie!!!!

  74. I enjoyed this movie, but it was sad too. It is about a young girl named Paikea and when she was born her Mum and her twin brother died. She grows up with grandfather and her grandmother and she lives a tough life because she grows up in a place which is a male dominated area for the leader, or chief. I liked it because I found why I need to appreciate different communities and the way people live. My Favourite part of the movie would be at the end (Which i don’t want to spoil!) My Favourite Character, by far would be Paikea because of how much she tried to prove herself to be the leader, because her brother died at birth, and her grandfather was really upset, that they had no leader, but she wanted to prove her self! My least Favourite part of the movie would be when all the whales come into shore and they try to push them back in and keep them alive. I recommend this film for ages 12 and over, because I found it hard to understand, and needed to ask questions. This movie is a very inspirational film and touches your heart. Enjoy Watching Whale rider!

This film opened up my heart and I viewed things in a different perspective. I’m very proud of the things I have achieved in life and those who have supported me throughout my journey. Paikea – the main character played in this film, is the strongest character, and believes she can do anything. All Paikea wanted was a family, and she begins to feel unwanted because of her gender. This is a very inspirational film and I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend this film to anybody over the age of 12, because i agree that this film is hard for young people to understand. This film touches your heart and will stay with you forever.

  76. We are watching this in english at the moment. It is a sad movie and makes you angry and look at the world differently. It is all about a little girl named Piekea who is a marie. When she was born her mother died giving birth and so did her twin brother. No one wanted her because the community needed a boy to lead them out of darkness. Her farther moves away and her grandma and grandpa take care of her. The grandpa only wanted a boy. Paikea shows all the charaistics of a leader but yet she is not accepted. Her grandfather took lots of boys out on a boat and threw his whale tooth necklace into the water, the first boy who found it would become the male leader. Not a single boy found it in the water. The next day Pies uncle took her out and she dived in and found it. She also defeated a boy in tyre iron which her grandpa got very mad at her about he said she had ruined the ansisters tradition. All she wanted was a family. This is a very inspirational film and i absolutely love it. I would say this movie is for 12+ because younger people may not understand. I rate this book 9 out of 10 because there is always room for improvement. I highly recommend it.

I thought whale rider was quite a good movie but at times it wasn’t very exciting and I know they were trying to stick with the truth but they could have added a bit more Hollywood glamor to it. It’s quite a tear jerker but it had lots of meaning to it and it teaches you a lot about the different modern day tribes in New Zealand. The main story line is about a girl known as Pai and her struggles against her grandfather and exclusive tradition. It fits in perfectly with our charity theme this year which is empowering women. I liked this movie a lot so I give it 3 and a half stars.

Its about somewhere on the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs have always been the first-born and male. Many generations later, the contemporary tale revolves around a young mother whose male newborn twin dies in childbirth. Her young husband flees New Zealand in grief, leaving grandparents Koro and Nanny Flowers to raise the sole survivor, a feisty little girl named Pai, who radiates with life and energy. It’s no wonder that her grandmother and the entire community love her, but alas, the grandfather she worships is too busy mourning the loss of the baby boy he expected would lead the tribe to better days. This movie shows many life lessons, things that we can all relate too and learn from. It shows that Koro rejects Pai to be the leader because she is a girl, but that isn’t the only message that this movie sends out. It doesn’t matter what color skin or where you are from, all that matters is that your a good person. Paikea proved Koro wrong and showed him and her community that she could be the leader. So the life lesson is that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from, because there is always people who will think you cant do it, but you dont have to be a certain somebody to prove everyone wrong.

I believe Pai is a great character she is very determined and strong, but sometimes you have to just feel sorry for her for all that she has been through; her mothers death and even her brothers death as well. For this fault she is treated for something useless from her grandfather, yet I love her grandmothers character even though she does do some things wrong her grandmother is still always there for her. Her grandmother doesn’t care that she is a girl like her grandfather all that she cares about is that she is a part of the family and she matters the same as everyone else. Koro her grandfather is a very angry person and always makes pai feel unwanted and useless. Flowers her grandma is very caring for her though and believes in her. I would highly recommend this movie because once you start watching you need to keep going.

My favourite character is Pai because she is very brave and always forgives her grandfather even though he is very mean to her.
I think this is a good movie about culture.

I really enjoyed this movie, because I love that Pai doesn’t ever give up even in the worst of situations, I don’t like how Paka is mean to Pai and doesn’t let her be the leader, my favourite part in the movie is when Pai beats the boy when they are fighting with the sticks, I recomend this movie to 12 and over, I rate this book 7/10

  118. best movie of all time i thorght it would be different but turns out to be the best ! i love how paka stands up for her self and just doesnt sit back all sad like i am a girl so i cant join she fights and make sure that girls can be apart of it to and enjoy life with be equal to the boys and say it doesnt matter if the next chief is a girl or a boy even though all the boys would love it if any boy that could be chief was. my favourite part is when paka beats the boy i forgot his name but beats him when they are fighting with the sticks and than koro comes and sees and tells paka off but she still knows that he loves her and she can stand up for herself there was some sad parts in there and i rekon the most sadiest was when she got on the whale.

  119. i real enjoyed this movie. It is about a girl that can talk to the whales and she is try to prove her point to her grandfather Koro that she is good enough to be the chief. She can’t be a chief because she is a girl and you have to be a boy to be a chief. My favorite part of this movie is when they are at a meeting and all girls must sit at the back and Pai sits at the front with the boys. That is where Koro tells her to sit at the back and she doesn’t so Koro tells her to leave. The thing i would of change about this movie is that at the start that Pai’s mother had not of died giving birth. I recommend this movie 12+ because i don’t think younger kids would understand it that much. I rate it 6/10

It is set in New Zealand and it is about the Mauri clan. The movie is very special in it’s own little way and i highly recommend that you rent it asap and enjoy.

  121. To be honest I didn’t really enjoy this movie. I watched it for English but it is not the type of movie that I enjoy watching. It was a bit too boring and for me. It was upsetting how Pai was always sad and her grandfather was mean throughout the whole movie. What I did like though was that I learnt a lot about Maori culture and their traditions. I never even new that Maori people existed until I watched the movie Whale Rider. I think that this movie would be more appropriate for someone who is more into romances and sad, true stories.

  122. Wow what a great movie! I was told not long ago that we were going to study this movie in English. With complete honesty i thought to myself that it was going to be completely boring! But no, after watching about 5 minutes of it you just cant stop watching it, Its great. This movie is based around the tradition and culture of New Zealand. It is very interesting because at the same time you are learning new things which is great! The only thing i didnt like was because we couldn’t finish this in one period. We would always have to stop it when the bell goes but you just want to keep watching more! I highly recommend this movie for just about anyone, including adults, elderly, and teenagers!

  125. the first time i was told “your studying the movie whale rider” i thought i wasnt going to enjoy in at all but if im totally honest its a good movie. its is soo full of emotion and the fact you get to learn about a different culture at the same time is such a bonus. Pai is a young girl struggling with her family. First she has no mother because she died in child birth and second her grand parents blame her for the death. somehow she overlooks that and show them that she is a strong brave talented person.

  126. We watched this movie for english. I was expecting it to be a little boring but then once I had watched I realised there is much more to this movie then meets the eye.

Paikea (the main character) was one of the twin born, but her twin brother died at birth as did her mother. Paikea was known as bad luck, people in her life blame her for the deaths.

She is named Paikea and it was meant to be the next cheifs name but her father knew she was the next chief even though it is against the tradition. Koro (her grandfather) battles many issues with all of this but eventually accepts it and realises the truth.

I believe this book is suitable for children at least 12+ because they need to understand the meaning behind the whole movie.

I loved it an hope to watch it again some time.

Pai then lives at her Grandparents house and tries to show Koro(her Grandfather) that she can do the same things as boys. The movie was really interesting and it is set in New Zealand. The movie was sad but it was good to learn about different cultures. In the end Koro and Paikea are talking to each other again and it is a happy ending. I would recommend this movie to people 11+

It Opens your eyes to other cultures and peoples views.

Pai’s mother died at birth, along with her twin, who happened to be a boy, This boy would have become Chief of the village, but he died and Pai didnt, this makes her a Living reminder and symbol of bad luck,
As No Male heir was able to become Chief , Koro Pai’s Grand Father sets up a school to teach the local boy’s how to become Chief, Pai Trys to be a part of this but her grand father refuses her even though she has the best quality’s for the job.

This is a fantastic movie, and the ending is really cute, if you have not watched the movie, watch it for yourself x

  129. I think that this movie is very interesting.
We had to watch it at school to write things about it that would be assessed.
It’s about a young girl named Paikea, who at birth had her twin brother die as well as her mother.
Her family wanted a boy because of their traditions, they wanted a new leader and it had to be a boy.
So Pai was unwanted because she’s a girl.
Even though Pai is a girl, she shows the perfect qualities of a leader but her Grand Dad, Koro still really wanted a boy leader so he sets up a school for the local boys to learn how to be a leader, Pai tries to be at the school but obviously, Koro won’t let her.

but it is a pretty good movie because it teaches you about culture and tradition and not to judge others.
i would recommend this movie to any one especially those who can handle a sad movie.

Whale Rider is a movie all about New Zealand culture and how the main character Paikea tries to prove to her grandpa that she is worth something and that she isn’t just some annoying kid.
Paikea is very serious about her culture and her traditions.

  133. I have been doing film texts in English and studying this movie. It’s a really inspirational and moving story line about a young girl called Paikea, who has the courage, determination and strength you will be astonished to find in a girl her age, when she was born her twin brother died and took their mother with him. Her grandfather Koro thinks she doesn’t have what it takes to be a leader and anyway she’s broken the tradition: she’s not a boy!
Will she prove him wrong? Or will she be kept in the dark?
I recommend this most definitely to anyone, anywhere.

  134. Fantastic movie of tradition New Zealand culture and beliefs and a girl Paikea who believes she is the leader, the whale rider. But her Grandfather Koro does not believe that she is. After all it is always a boy leader so how could it be Paikea.
Paikea is determined to prove that she is the one but will Koro ever believe her?
But at the same time she’s going through difficulties with her family and the whales.
I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

She grows up with grandfather and her grandmother and she lives a tough life because she grows up in a place which is a male dominated area. Her Grandfather is trying to find a new leader and never considers Paikea to be a leader. Paikea’s Grandfather is mean to her. Paikea believes that she is a good leader and never gives up. I think her determination and positive attitude is what gets her through. It ends in a very good way so watch the movie and you will find out. It is a very emotional movie. My favourite character is definitely Paikea because of the courage and determination she show during the movie. My favourite bit would have to be when paikea calls the whales for help and they all come on to the shores. I really loved this movie. I liked the story behind it and i recommend this movie to everyone.
