Her duties include feeding the imperial dragons, lacklustre animals living in a fortified pit. When the female dies and her body is mutilated by the imperial dragonkeeper, Danzi (the male dragon) escapes with Ping and a mysterious stone which is very important to the dragon. They must reach the Ocean, but Danzi is old, sick and injured, so it is up to Ping to keep him going. Along the way, she discovers some surprising strengths within herself.

This is a fantastic book about friendship and adventure. I love the way the author, Caroline Wilkinson has wrote this story. It is so descriptive and you can picture each scene in your head as you are reading. Ping is a slave to the Dragon Keeper at the Imperial Palace. Each night she feeds the dragons since the dragon Keeper can’t be bothered. There are only two dragons left and when one of them dies Ping escapes the palace with the remaining dragon, Danzi. Danzi is looking after a precious and mysterious stone and it must be taken to the ocean. So Danzi and Ping go on a journey together and discover the big world! My favourite character in this book is Ping since she is so brave and adventurous. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

  2. I read this book, Dragon Keeper, in Yr 6. I was recommended this book by the librarian as she knew I was into fantasy drama. I was interested by the front cover as this girl, dragon and purple stone had not yet had a clear explanation to me yet. The book looks big and long to read but that makes the story even better as the novel has the best storyline. Ping has been a slave ever since she can remember and never known her real name. Her duties at the palace is serving her master and feeding the farm animals, including two imperial dragons. She hears a big, low growl from the dragon’s chamber and finds the female dragon is dead. Her master is actually in charge of them and he would be arrested if the officials find out he has not uphold his duty so he cuts up the dragon and disposes of the body. The male dragon starts communicating with Ping and explains a quest of the purple stone that needs to be taken to the ocean. They set off on their quest and Ping finds inner qualities that she never knew existed. I rate this book a definite 10/10 and everyone is welcome to read it. Make sure to read the sequel series too!

  3. The book is about a slave girl and a dragon, who travel through China to reach the ocean, carrying a purple dragonstone with them and encountering many dangers on their strange quest, and journey of friendship and self discovery. A slave girl Ping escapes from the palace of Huangling with the dragon Danzi, carrying the dragonstone towards Ocean. They encounter both Diao and The Necromancer on the journey, but overcome these evil men, and also meet The Emperor. Ping makes a number of strong friendships on their journey, with Wang Cao, Danzi, Hua and the Emperor, and she treasures those friendships. think that Dragonkeeper is a superbly constructed book. Its vocabulary is very rich and full of descriptive language which helps build an image of the towns and villages of old China, in which the story takes place. Its strong themes of friendship and self-discovery are well developed by the plot, which moves at a varied pace, but is always interesting.
The protagonist, Ping, can be doubting, brave, kind and awesome, and as a reader I found parts of myself that were identical to Ping – I identified well with her.
I recommend this book because it is a terrific book, and I want to share the joy it gave me. It is exciting, it is hard to put down, and it makes you want to read the following books by the same author. I think that, because of some violence and more difficult vocabulary it should be read by children from 8 years old.

  4. This is a wonderful book!
Though it looks long and tedious, there is always something interesting going on! This book is set in Ancient China, with emperors and best of all dragons! Ping was sold by her parents when she was a baby to the fat mean horrible dragon keeper. She looks after all the animals, and two dragons. When one dragon dies mysteriously, this leads up into a great adventure when Danzi ( the remaining dragon ) and Ping have to escape to safety. This book is about friendship and daring, as they are being followed by a cruel dragon hunter, who wants to kill Danzi. My favourite part is when Ping has to learn to use her chi, and Danzi is always trying to make her do it properly.
I loved this book and recommend it for 10+ 9/10! 😀

He is the dragon who is very old and I think the people who would like this book would be teenagers and people who enjoy reading about dragons. My favourite part of the book would be when Ping reuses Danzi from the cruel Dragonkeeper. I would rate this book 9 out of 10

  6. I recommend the Dragon Keeper series by Carole Wilkinson. This book is a fictional novel that is set in the Han Dynasty times. It is about a slave girl, Ping, who saves the life of an old dragon that has been kept in captivity over 100 years by a very cruel person. Ping and the dragon travel all over China to an important destination whilst trying to keep a mysterious stone protected. They both face a lot adversity and tough situations. Will they make it out alive? In this engaging book it tells you a lot about great survival skills and different charms/spells in China. I love this book so much I have read the whole series, I hope Carole another book for the series. It is so enticing and engaging, I would literally read it for like 2 hours each night. I just wanted to keep reading and reading! In this novel it also used a lot describing and interesting words. I recommend this for 11+ years old because there is a lot of violence. I rate this book 10 out of 10!

  9. I really enjoyed Dragon Keeper. I didn’t like how her master treated the dragons though and how gruesome he was to them!! I liked how Ping cared for Danzi and looked after him on the journey across China, it was a fantastic book and you just can’t put it down, especially once you read the sequels to it!! I like how they have their adventures on the way like mysterious cities they come across and Dragon Hunters and just the way they have to find food and things they need to live!
I love this book and will definitely read it again in the future.

  18. I have never really liked books about ancient China but this one is fantastic. You can picture every scene Caroline Wilkinson creates in your head because her writing is so heart felt and descriptive. Anyone into adventure, ancient China, mystery or anyone who is just looking for a great read will really enjoy this.
Ping is a slave at the Imperial palace. Her master is the “Dragon Keeper” but he is lazy and so sends Ping to feed the dragons in the pits herself. The dragons have all but died out and the remaining ones are in a terrible condition owing to the dragon keeper’s negligence. When one of the two remaining dragon dies, the final dragon, Danzi escapes the Imperial palace with Ping. Danzi is protecting a strange stone that he says Ping must help him carry to the ocean so Ping with no other alternative follows his lead and is introduced to a new world as she relishes her freedom.
This book is really about self discovery and contains some good messages about believing in yourself. I personally thought that Dragon Keeper was much better than its sequels, “Garden of the Purple dragon” and “Dragon Moon” but some of my friends disagree. Give this book a go it is a really interesting read.
