The blog for books and movies

Anna Goldsmith has moved with her family from her posh school in Surrey to a small Yorkshire town and the local comprehensive. Anna worries she won’t fit in – she’s a bit too brainy and her accent sticks out a mile. But Anna’s got everything going for her; she’s attractive, sporty and musical, and Hayley Parkin, the most popular girl in her year, wants to be her best friend. So Anna reckons she’ll be fine. Except that Hayley – charming and gorgeous with a year round tan – is not all she seems. Soon she’s playing power games; freezing Anna out one minute, then nice as pie the next. Anna is totally confused. As the school year progresses, Hayley’s behaviour gets more erratic, and the sarcastic remarks get more personal. Anna is sliding into depression and despair. Melanie – her other best friend – tries to understand, but she’s caught in the middle, and Hayley’s playing games with her, too. Can Mel help Anna before she goes and does something really silly…?

I quite like this book. This book may seem a little sad at some points but is a naturally beautiful story. My favourite part of the book is when Melanie (Anna’s best friend) is helping Anna through all her hard times. I think that Melanie opens Anna’s eyes to suicide and the serious and real effects. I think that if I could change anything in this book, it would be the fact that Hayley bullies Anna for being too brainy. I feel that Sue Mayfield could’ve picked a different reason. But overall this book was very interesting and remarkable. I rate this book a 7/10🙂

  2. I really enjoyed reading this book and i was hooked and didn’t want to put it down. This book is a very serious book and it is about things that happen to kids our age. Some things were quite visual and i couldn’t image how upset Anna must of felt to do things like what she did. This book really made me think. it made me think of how i might treat people and even if i mean something as a joke to they take it has a joke. I recommend this book for ages 13+

  3. The book blue is a great book, lots of exciting moments and interesting scenes. My favourite character is Melanie because she is Ana’s best friend and she sticks with her no matter what. Ana doesn’t have the best relationship with her mother (Francis) Which is said because I don’t know what I would do without my mum. I dislike Hayley a lot, she is just a very rude and selfish person and I don’t like what she does to Ana, But I will admit the book wouldn’t be interesting without Hayley. If I was Francis and I saw my daughter in hospital almost dead, my world would end and I think its extremely sad that Ana thought that her parents didn’t approve of her and that they liked her brother better. Overall the book is a great eye opener to the effects on bullying and suicide. I would recommend this book for people who have a friend suffering from bullying or if anyone just wants a great and emotional read.

  4. The book Blue is amazingly well done book, it is a must read by everyone! It has such a great message which is so important to our day now! It is such a harsh, drama like but so emotional trilling book! The way it was written wasn’t holding back, it was out there, it was harsh and gave a great message to the youth of today, it made me cry and made me feel a mixed of different feelings, but my far it was one if the best books i have read of my time! it was not a long book, and its easy to read! it was amazing! 10/10 and i strongly recommend this to everyone !!!

  5. I think this book is alright. It”s just not one of those books that grab you by the throat and never lets go. It’s more like those books that all you do is read the words on the page and it just goes on and on. But i have to admit there are some parts of this book that do make you ask questions and want to read the next part. My favourite part of the book was probably when the main character Anna and her best friend Melanie were walking and having a pretty deep conversation. I like how this book really shows the affects of bullying and how words can really hurt someone. My favourite character was probably Melanie because she is very relatable because she is just a normal school girl, not too popular, but not too low on the social scale. She never stands up for Anna when she is getting bullied but I can see why, because she doesn’t want to be a loser. If I could change one thing about this book, it would probably be changing the cover on the book because sometimes the cover can be the difference between someone reading it or not. I recommend this book to anyone who needs an eye-opener on bullying. I rate this book a 5/10! 😦

  6. Blue is one of my favourite books ever. Although this book gave me excitement and drama when I read it, I didn’t like the open ending. When I read books I like to know what happened and how it ended but this ending didn’t give me much detail about what was going on. Blue has been an emotional roller coaster for me with lots of happiness and love but mostly sorrow, grief and misery. Anna has gave me the inspiration to stand strong during tough times and to speak out and never be scared to. I now know the affects of what bullying can do to someone making them feel depressed and upset. This book is filled with so many life lessons like being yourself, stand up for yourself, do whats right and to never be the outsider. If I ever see a situation like Anna’s I would never get lost in the crowd and not stand up for that person. My favourite character during the book was Anna because she had such an interesting story, moving happily to a new school then going downhill when she met Hayley. She tried to stay strong which is what I found fond of her. Although she had done may bad things to herself throughout the book it was for a reason which made me realise the affects of what bullying can do to a person. Hayley was definitely my least favourite character because she was such a cruel person to Anna. I am never a person that is into reading books but after reading Blue, I am going to start reading more. 9/10 and I recommend it to girls 13+.

  7. This book was amazing but not as I had expected it. I didn’t like and enjoy this book as much as I would of liked to. It was a bit weird but interesting at the same time. I thought the book ‘blue’ would of been more exciting when bad parts come, but it wasn’t. I am sick of Anna because she doesn’t believe in herself and she doesn’t take herself for granted. I think she needs to be more strong and tell someone about the bullying. Hayley is so mean towards Anna and who ever gets in her way. I don’t like Hayley because she makes Anna feel very bad about herself. I think Hayley is trying to make Anna kill herself. Melanie isn’t a very good friend, she’s a bystander. Melanie doesn’t stand up for Anna, because she doesn’t want to be bullied herself by Hayley and other people. Anna’s family would feel so bad about themselves because they didn’t know what Anna was doing to herself and why she did it. I am going to take away a few things from this book, like not being a bystander if my friend gets bullied and not to get into a situation when i’m not needed. I love this book and I would rate it a 7/10 🙂

  8. I have just finished reading the book ‘Blue’, it was one of the most emotional books I have ever read. Unlike most books ‘Blue’ grasped you from the start of chapter 1, instead of starting with a normal plot Sue Mayfield began the book right in the middle of the drama or problem. ‘Blue’ is a book about a 14-15 year old girl named Ana, she has just moved. This girl Hayley befriends her but later on completely gets turned off Ana and begins bullying her. The book is told in the perceptive of 2 people, Melanie (Ana’s friend) and also in the perceptive of Ana through her diary. This book is a great read, filled with so many emotions and so many things that many young people are experiencing today. I believe that Sue Mayfield wrote this book to be able to connect with young readers or young people experiencing bullying or who know someone who is being bullied. I wouldn’t recommend this book to very young readers as it describes in a lot of detail some parts and aspects of self harm, I would recommend this book to readers over the age of 14. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, thank you Sue.

  9. I am reading this book at the moment, and it has been one of the most heart-wrenching stories I have ever read. I have to say that it can be extremely sad at times, and can be hard to read because of how sad it is. I like this book because I think it really makes you put yourself in other peoples shoes and helps you to understand what some people go through in their lives. It is a story about a girl named Anna who is friends with a girl named Hayley, and then Hayley completely turns against Anna and stops being nice to her. The book has two different perspectives in it, and one of them is from Melanie’s perspective on the whole thing. At some points Melanie gets stuck between Hayley and Anna, and that is very hard for her. I love the part at the start when Melanie calls Anna her best friend, because it shows that Anna does have people that actually are kind and care about her, unlike Hayley. I would recommend this book to people 13 years and over who are able to handle sadness and bullying.

  10. Blue is a really interesting book. It is very sad and I found some of the stuff quite hard to read because the book is about bulling and some of the things that are done to Anna are so mean and cruel. Anna starts abusing her body and it gets really sad and a bit ugly. Even thought the book is so sad its a great story and it helps you realise how bulling doesn’t just affect the person getting bullied although it affects them the most because it affects the way you act it can hurt your whole family. It also hurts you friends as they can’t be themselves and they don’t know how to cope with the situation. The book blue is amazing but the hardest thing to understand is that the person bulling Anna is one of her good friends. You can learn so much from blue and it is a great read that keeps you wanting more. I give blue a 8/10 and recommend it for girls 12+

WOW! What a fantastic book! I loved this book so much and I would definently read it again and recommend it to others. However I would recommend it to school students from Yr 7 to Yr 12. This is because it can get a bit upsetting and disturbing at some points. I would definently recommend you read it as you learn such about bullying and the damage that it can cause on a person’s life. I thought that this book was very enthralling when the first page began with Anna trying to commit suicide. Throughout the whole book it took you along the journey of Anna’s struggle and her fight against bullying. It puts you in each characters shoes and describes everyones point of view. I love the way the book is set out with each chapter a different person telling different parts of the story. I learnt so much from this book. I could not understand how someone like Hayley could enjoy watching someones life slowly falling apart from bullying. I have no idea how Hayley could possibly be so mean to Anna. I was so upset by the fact that such an intelligent, kind and caring teenager could be bullied so badly to the point of cutting herself  and to the point where she wants to die and end her life. However it was so enthralling. The book describes everything so well and you don’t want to put it down. Every week I wanted to keep reading to see if Anna would finally stand up to Hayley. This book is an amazing book which is very enthralling and you can learn so much from it. I would definently recommend it.

  12. This book is completely and entirely taking over my mind. I have physically had to pull myself away from reading it. Every chapter I have read has made me so angry and annoyed at Hayley because her bullying gets worse and worse. I have felt like screaming at Hayley so many times. The cruel, mean comments are so terrible.

I think I can relate to this book I have been bullied before and I can see how Anna must be feeling. The feeling of not wanting to go to school, not wanting to face the bully and just the overall feeling of sadness. It shows that the author has done a great job of showing how small, subtle bullying can build up to cause so much pain for poor Anna, as it happened to me. It reminds me of how real and bad bullying can be, and that it is a problem in society that does not get talked about enough. It also reminded me about bystanders, the people who get away with what they do. Bystanding is as much as a problem as the bullying itself, as people who surround the scene make it worse for the person being bullied. I remember when I used to get bullied how when people surrounded the scene and laughed when I got made fun of, and it made it so much more detrimental.

To end up this journal, this book reminded me of a saying; “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” This saying has been said a million times, but to me it isn’t true. Sometimes words hurt even more than sticks and stones, they tear your heart apart and break all your confidence down. Blue has shown me that the quote that has long lived in our minds is not exactly true. I give Blue a 8/10.

I really enjoyed this book. I would rate it 7 out of 10. The thing I liked most about it though is that it is definitely not a book I would just pick up off the shelf and decide to read. This is the thing I love about Lit circles. You read things you wouldn’t usually read. However this book is quite confronting. Within the first chapter you find out that Anna tries to commit suicide. Then later in this book their is a quite “squeamish” part which made me feel slightly ill. For these reasons I would suggest it to be read by students that are 12 years old, and older. It would be great if whoever is reading this book has a friend who is being bullied because they will realize that this is a serious matter and not something that should be left alone. One of my favorite parts of this book was when Anna’s mum started reading her diary and had her first insight into Anna’s life. Her mum finally realizes how miserable Anna’s life has really been and how blind she has been through all of this. My favorite character would definitely be Anna, she goes through so much and is so strong, except in the end it is all to much resulting her to go to great lengths like committing suicide. Except she is a really inspirational person, she does tell her mum about the bullying trying to make a stand and she does some amazing work. Throughout the book their is some great poems which I found inspiriting and I am sure that anyone wanting to become a writer would find them inspiring too. I can really relate to Melody in this story. I have had friends who have been bullied before by other friends, and like Melody I too didn’t do much about it. One thing I was annoyed with in this book is the way it kept changing between past and present text. It annoyed me because I had to reread parts so that it made sense. The ending also annoyed me. I won’t tell you what happens except I will give you a hint. It is devastating but not how you would expect it.

I read this book because someone told me from lit circles it was great, and it was. I will always remember all of the plot because it’s really deep and touching. I remember reading this book without laying it down once. It so real what’s happening to Anna, Teenagers and even adults can be so mean without even noticing it. It’s all fun and games until someone commits suicide.
What fascinated me the most was the writing. It’s divided in dairy entries by Anna, which her mother reads while she’s sitting next to Anna who is in a coma.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes stories who are real and wants to know how lucky they really are, I give it a 8/10. I would reccomend to teenagers + because you need to be mature enough to understand.

  15. Blue is a book about Anna, who gets bullied by her ‘friend’ Hayley. Anna feels so alone and she doesn’t know what she did to make Hayley mad at her. The book is done in three points of view, Melanie’s (another friend), Anna’s and Anna’s mum’s. Blue has left me with a new perspective of bullying and I am going to keep an eye out for bullying in my life (so I can stop it). I think this book might be good for people who think that suicide is the only option because it gives you an insight to how it can affect the people you leave behind, to see that you were never alone and that there is always help. Blue is a good book and I would rate it 7/10.

  16. In the book Blue by Sue Mayfield, Anna Goldsmith is bullied by Hayley Parkins and doesn’t deserve one bit of it. Personally to me i don’t like Hayley at all she is mean and nasty to everyone and makes them do everything for her it annoys me because Anna seems like such a sweet girl. Melanie is Anna’s friend but i still don’t know if i like her or not because she sucks up to Hayley and then is also nice to Anna. I think Melanie is a little bit of the reason why Anna tried to commit suicide. I wonder how Frances felt reading Anna’s diary because it would have been heartbreaking reading about all of the stuff that happened to Anna with out her even noticing it. I think Frances pushed Anna to far with studying because she was always on her back about all that. I think Frances just wanted to give her daughter the brightest future she could have. I really like this book for its detail and the way its written the author Sue Mayfield has put it in different fonts and sizes to tell which is normal writing and which is Anna’s diary. this is a great book and i really enjoyed it.

  17. Blue. A great book, a great story, a true reality and a ‘let’s just leave you hanging’ ending.

Blue is the only book I have read and finished that was about high school and bullying. I like how I could read from the different perspectives of the characters. My favourite perspective was Anna’s because her diary was the most influencing, as in it made me feel what she felt and it made me feel all these emotions for her. My favourite pieces by Anna were her poems. They were amazing! They were the main reasons why I was so sad, each and every word was powerful. I really wanted to read from Hayley’s perspective, I think it would have been good but her words would be mean and cruel.

I think most people would say their least favourite part was the how Anna was bullied mine was the ending. An epilogue would have been nice. I was really hoping that Anna would wake, move schools, Hayley would move schools (because everyone deserted her) and that Melanie and Anna would be great friends but I guess I wont ever find out.

Blue is a very sad book, I would recommend this book for mature people (+13). I rate Blue 8 1/2 out of 10.

  18. This book is very shocking and eye opening. It is and eye opening book because it shows the bullying from 3 different point of views. The point of views of Anna’s mum, Melanie and Anna’s diary. By showing the point of views, it shows how the changes in Anna are expressed differently and how they have been dealt with and accepted with the people around Anna. Why Haley started the bullying is unknown, why Haley went so far in the bullying is unknown and why and how their friendship ended is unknown. What annoyed me the most was that Anna didn’t say anything, she thought that it would be easy to notice the changes with her but no, they weren’t and what also annoyed me is that Melanie didn’t stand up for Anna or tell anyone. Melanie was more worried of what would happen to her if she did this or that while Haley was bullying Anna more than what is happening to Anna.
If the book was rewritten as a real life story and I was Melanie, I would have made sure that Haley was exposed. Exposed in the way that she is watched 24/7 at school so she doesn’t bully anyone. Exposed in the way so that she has to go to get help. If Haley was bullying Anna there was a reason for it, she was either jealous of Anna or having troubles at home. Why did Anna lie and agreeing with Haley when they were in the head of the year’s office. This book was shocking because of they was that Haley bullied Anna, how she had the ideas of doing certain things to Anna. There was one certain part of the book that was very horrifying, well two actually. The first was when Anna took the overdose and her mum found her in the bathroom and the second was when Anna was cutting herself to get the pain flow out. Overall the book was a great book and I hope someone else enjoys it as much as I did.

  19. Well this book was very intense and there was some parts I had to skip over because I just couldn’t handle it. Over the whole book my favourite part was Anna’s diary because you get an idea of how bad bullying can actually be. This book was very heart warming towards me because it helped me realise so much and how much bullying can actually do to someone. I think the message in this book is bullying and self harm. This book taught me about all the struggles people who get bullied go through. I liked the ending of the book but it only told us that Anna was going to be ok, but I wish there was a second book so I could know what happens next. Overall this was a great book and I think lots of girls and boys should read this book because it really opens yours eyes towards bullying and self harming yourself.

  20. Wow! This book is so emotional and amazing all at the same time. Its sad how such a bright and talented girl could end up so rotten inside. Hayley was the most popular girl in school but when she found out what she had done to Anna she would’ve been shocked, because i no i would have been. But what you do if you found out that you have bullied a beautiful bright girl, smashed her whole life and dreams like she was an ant? Watching all the dreams slide away like they are on the side of a hill and there is a big mud slide coming there way. Listening to her life being crushed by a giant rock and brake into a million pieces. Feeling like your the monster who killed a beautiful, young girl who just wanted to be loved by everyone.

  21. I have never been so happy that someone survived in my whole life. The moment i finished the book i just felt a sense of relief go through me, like everything was all good again. As happy as i was that I finished the book and Anna was okay, I was sad that it had to end as well. I was so mad when Melanie brings the letter to Hayley and she told her that Anna had overdosed and all Hayley said was ‘Thats such an Anna thing to do’, it makes me feel so angry inside that Hayley still doesn’t realize what she had really done to Anna. This book has really mad me realize what bullying can do to a person, how every little remark, every little push shove and lie just pushed her more and more away, and really changed Anna, not for the better, but for the worse. What happened to Anna was a horrible horrible thing ! And knowing that she will live the rest of her life, remembering what had happened on her, knowing that Hayley changed who she was, I would just never forgive Hayley. Its like when people say you scrunch a piece of paper up, and then you try and flatten it all out again, the creases are still there and those scars on Anna’s arm will anyways be a constant reminder of how terrible she felt about herself, and I just really hope that Hayley is horrified with herself. On the day she tried to kill herself, she wasn’t herself anymore, she was who Hayley made her to be and she finally pushed her way too far and her fight with Melanie just did it for her. Imagine feeling like you had no friends and no one likes you and your one friend and you have a fight. I was so relieved when i found out she didn’t die, i was so happy but it just made me wonder what would happen next? would Hayley realize that she went to far and say sorry? or would she just push Anna away again? really makes me wonder, and I would just love it if they made a second book telling us what happened after the happy ending, its like those fairy tales where the princess finds her true love and thats just the end, but what happens after that happy ending?

  22. I finished reading blue this week, the ending was whats called an ‘open ending.’ I wasn’t particularly a fan of the last few chapters because I just didn’t like the way things unfolded. The ending was to under-descriptive, it was basically what ever you made of it, and a lot of people could have interpreted it falsely which perhaps could of ruined their experience of the book. I think over all the book was fantastic, there is nothing better then a book that is actually real and can teach us something about how people feels and everyday life being a teenager. It’s quite ironic how sometimes we can completely forget what could be going on in others life, whether it be the person who sits next to us or somebody on the other side of the world. I think this book really brought me down to reality and reminded me that life isn’t perfect and everything is not as it seems. I recommend this book to adults to give them a vast knowledge of bullying and how somebody feels when it happens so they can be aware, and I of course, recommend it to girls and boys from the age of 13. This book is good because it gives us an insight on the victims feelings, something we all often forget about.

  23. I read this book a while ago for my lit circles activity, and I decided to do a review on it because it really showed me how serious bullying can get. It’s about a girl named Anna, who moves to a new school, and at first, everything turns out right. She had heaps of friends and one really good friend (Hayley) who she can trust and tell everything to her, but very soon, she finds herself with hardly any friends at all, and Hayley starts to bully her and turn everyone else against her for no reason at all.
It teaches us about why people shouldn’t bully each other and give each other a hard time, because it can become very serious, even if you’re only joking. I would rate this book 9/10 🙂

  24. Reading this book has been really amazing. I think that everyone should read this book because it has been such an eye opening experience. The two main characters, Haylie and Anna should have talked about their situation before it was blown out of proportion, which is generally the case in most situations. The author has written a fantastic story line, with plots that some teenagers can relate to. I was really disappointed with the ending of this book, will Anna survive? I hope that their is a sequel to this book so that I can read on and find out what happens to Anna. I have found Lit circles surprisingly fun and I really enjoyed reading and doing the activities each week. I would of liked it if lit circles went for longer because it just doesn’t seem long enough to me all of the books this year sounded amazing I wish I could of chosen all of them.

I loved this book. It didn’t get me at first but then took me away a journey of sneaky, lying and how mean girls can be. The ending though wasn’t my type, I really wanted to know what actually happened but you could make your own ending. This book is good at showing people that the little things matter and it may not hurt you but everybody is different. Rate: 8/10

  26. This week i was thoroughly disappointed with the ending! The book blue works up such tention and the ending is just a let down. I loved how the book builds up and leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat. I find that its good how Hayley finally realises that what she has been doing to Anna is just wrong, and that if she continues any more terrible things would happen. Hayley is no doubt snobby, a little b*itch and in fact very sneaky. Hayley thinks the whole world revoles around her and anything she says or do everyone will copy her and follow her, but even though how mush she will hate it she wont always gets her way. I was coming up to the finally pages of the book and went to turn the page to find out what happen and nothing there was nothing exciting just the plain old filling me in, i mean i really wanted to find out what happen but nothing i was very disappointed. rate 10/10

  27. I’ve finally finished the book blue, and I was a bit upset to not find out about what would happen to Anna in the end. I was half hoping that she would pass away, and half hoping that she would come out of hospital alive, and that Hayley would apologize to her for everything she had done. The only reason I had hoped that she would pass away is so that Hayley would then realize that people take bullying (or ‘jokes’) in different ways.

I was a bit annoyed that her ‘best friend’ Melanie only decided to stand up for her after she found out that she was in hospital. But I was glad that Anna wrote those notes to Hayley and Melanie so that they realized about how they are a part of the cause of why Anna nearly killed herself. She wrote some really descriptive things in the notes too, and after Melanie showed Hayley the note, Hayley sat there in shock, which made me happy to see that she had regretted everything that she did to hurt Anna.

I hope that Sue Mayfield makes another book called ‘Blue 2,’ where Anna either comes out of hospital, or passes away.

This week I was the investigator, and I chose to investigate on bulling. I made a keynote presentation on it, and I explained about the different types of bullying, how to stand up to bullying, why people bully, and what bullying actually is.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I can’t wait to do our little presentation on it!!!!!!! 😀

  28. Wow! What can I say about this book there isn’t enough words in the whole world to describe how much goes on, how much drama there is. I felt like the ending was not strong enough for how much went on throughout the book. It didn’t believe that the ending did the book justice.

I absolutely love this book. Every night when I went to bed I looked forward to reading this book. With every single chapter that went by it got more and more juicy more and more upsetting more and more addictive. I went through so many stages. I cried at one point, got furious at Hayley at another, yelled at Melanie to stick up for her supposed best friend and sat waiting, reading, for Anna’s mum to go to the bathroom to help save Anna.

Throughout this chapter things just get even more dramatic you find out so much more how much goes on. When you read this book you you get a rush of emotions. It is a great book and I love it.

  29. This was the final week of reading blue. I was speechless at the end when I found out how everyone reacted. I couldn’t believe how Melanie was when she received the message from Anna she looked as though it was lie like she wasn’t a culprit of ignoring what was happening in her life. I really just wanted for her to realize that she wasn’t being a good friend and she should have supported and helped Anna. The book book ended very sudden i am not sure i really agree with the ending because it didn’t really say much all it ended as was the doctor saying he thinks she will be alright. I thought that maybe she would die and everyone would realize what they have done or maybe the opposite she might survive and but still everyone sees how serious it was and they begin to start over and be a better person to her. While i was reading the end i really liked the way Hayley reacted how when Mel gave the letter to her and she read it, her face went pale and then she looked like her face had been swiped with a bad feeling of guilt. Over all i really liked this book i thought it was a really confronting book and it lets you know what you could be doing to someone and how they can react so badly to things. I think that if i were to get people to read this i think it is most suitable for the ages 12 and above about the age of high school because i think that younger kids couldn’t deal with some of the things in the book. If i were to rate this book out of 10 i would probably give it about a 9 the only reason i wouldn’t give it a 10 is because of the ending i just felt that they could have expanded a little more on it and made it a bit better but other than that i really liked it.

  30. Wow what an incredible ending to the book. It was very abrupt and wasn’t what I was expecting. In the last few chapters of the book things became quite intense. The last few pages of Anna’s diary are graphic and heart wrenching. They express Anna’s intense emotion and the feeling of suphocation from the bullying. In her eyes nobody cares anymore. Everyone she thought was her friends has turned on her and he own parents don’t understand what she is going through. These chapters are written so incredibly and the author has managed to portray Anna’s feeling throughout he pages so you truly understand why she tried to end her life. The poems Anna writes express the emotion she was feeling and while I read them I wanted to cry. The pain she was going through was unbelievable and I felt so bad and upset for her and the others way others were treating her!

This week I was really looking forward to reading what was written in Melanie and Hayley’s letter. Anna’s letter to Melanie was quite intense. It explained how she couldn’t deal with the things Melanie told her to simply laugh of. Although I think Melanie is a weak character at this point i felt very sorry for her. It must have being horrible for her to live with the fact she had ignored Anna’s please for help, she hadn’t realised what was happening. I was proud of Melanie in these chapters because she eventually stood up for what was right and told Hayley how she felt. I was so happy when Melanie stormed in and gave Hayley her letter. Like I was hopping Anna told her how it was her fault. She destroyed her life and made her feel so worthless she wanted to die. Now I hope that Haley understands the full extent of what she did and if Anna recovers she apologies repetitively.

The ending of the book made me want more. At the end of the book I was really happy because finally Melanie was there for Anna like a true friend. I was also overjoyed that Hayley had finally being taught her lesson, however harsh that might be. Although my prediction about the end of the book was wrong I was still happy Anna didn’t die because now there is a strong hope she survives.

After reading the whole book I can say I have a great love for the main character Anna. At the start of the book she a smart, popular and loved girl who is confident within herself. She let others bring her down and with their remarks slowly her self esteem lowered until she felt so worthless. By the end of the book I also began to understand Melanie. She was torn between being popular or a loyal friend and eventually she made the right choice and stood by her friend. I was really proud of her after doing this because finally she had found her courage and done the right thing.

Overall this book has taught me so much about bullying and things feel from the victims perspective. I have never read something so intense and serious, yet so addictive and captivating. It is so incredible and I feel as if by reading this book my world has being opened up to the life of a suicidal teen who had being turned on by her own best friend. It is one of the best books I have ever read and I would recommend it to everyone as it is filled with important and strong messages that teach you one thing. Bullying is no joke!

  31. Blue by Sue Mayfield,

I can not explain to you how much I love this book, words can not explain how much this book can teach you – it can show you how it would feel to be in someones shoes where they get bullied to the point where they attempt killing themselves. I can not stress how important it is to let people know about bullying and it’s effects, so many people are getting bullied these days yet not much is being done about it if people are still getting treated this way.

Although this book is really sad, it is worth reading your eyes might water, you may feel like punching the book in the anger of Hayley but thats what makes the book good.

Melanie can be good sometimes but bad others she would sometimes be nice to Anna and support her or others she would just tell her to get over it and walk out of the room, so I wouldn’t say Melanie was one of my favourite characters.

Even saying her name makes me angry… Hayley… she is such a selfish little girl, she hasn’t got one idea what ‘best friend’ means. At the start she would suck up to her and give her compliments and be nice like a real ‘best friend’ would so but then she turned in to a nasty little devil.

So I guess my favourite character is Anna, she goes through so much and not many people give her the support that she needs, sure she got hugs and you poor thing… but all she wanted was for it to stop. But is a hard job when the bully is Hayley Parkin.

This book has to be one the top 10 books I have ever read in my life, it is such a great book once you start you can’t stop. That’s why I didn’t want it as a lit circles book because I could only read it up to a certain number of chapters and I couldn’t read on even though I wanted to so badly.

I highly recommend this book to anyone is mature enough to read some parts which are sad, but other than that I think its a really good book and it really teaches you about bullying and it’s effects.

  32. What would you do when your ‘best’ friend starts playing mean, evil games with you and you feel like no one will listen? This is what Anna feels….

When I read Blue I was shocked to the things that happen but I couldn’t put it down! I read this book for lit circles and when I got to the page I had to stop at I nearly couldn’t!

My favourite character is Melanie because she is so nice to Anna and she stands up to the mean Haley.

My least favourite character is Haley (obviously) because I don’t get how she can be so mean to someone and not feel anything and just get away with it!

My favourite part of the book is when Anna goes mountain walking with her dad because she feels so happy to be with him.

This book is a book that will haunt you for days after reading but it also opens you up to a whole other world on bullying and the effects. I recommend this book for people 12 and above as it can be a bit sad.

I really enjoyed the way the book was written I found that because it was written from different peoples perspective and I think because of this I got a better understanding of the story and the characters actions. The characters Hayley and Melanie annoy me. I don’t like the ending very well but the rest of the book is full with twists and turns.

Blue is one of the most detailed and graphic books I have read.
Blue really pulled me in from the first page, as it narrates Anna who has just taken the pills being discovered by her mum, it does not explain anything, so you just can’t help but to keep reading as it works its way back through the story. Sue Mayfield really is able to bring out the emotions in Anna through her diary entries, I really like the idea of reading snippets of Anna’s life because it leaves you with so many questions which are eventually answered throughout the book.
My favourite part, is when Melanie gives the letter from Anna to Hayley. I had just been wanting so much for this part in the book to come. The powerful words of the letter almost got me crying and it made me realise just how brutal Hayley was.
There are many parts in the book that I would have rather have not read as they are described so realistically, but it just adds to the message that Sue Mayfield is trying to get across, just showing us the sheer distress bullying puts its victim in.
Although I have never been in a situation where bullying can become such a crisis, I have experienced being a friend like Melanie, watching the bullying take place and not knowing what to do.
I won’t say what happens in the ending, although I was slightly disappointed, the author could have elaborated on it, to describe the futures of all the characters.
But overall Blue is such a powerful and detailed book that everybody should read, to raise awareness of the effects of bullying and also to go through the journey of a victim of bullying and her family and friends.

  35. Blue, where do I begin about this book? This book was so con-fronting but at the same time so good. I really enjoyed it and I never wanted it to end. I used to really hate reading but after reading Blue I want to start reading. Through out reading this book I felt so angry because of the way Hayley treated Anna. Anna had no say in anything she did and Hayley was practicality controlling Anna’s mind in the way she thought about her self and the way she looked at things. She was so cruel but kind in other ways. I really recommend this book because it is good. I rate this book out 9/10. I rate it a bit be low 10 is because i didn’t really like the ending but i really do recommend it. It is Great!!!!!

I rate the book about 9/10 only because I would of liked it more if it had a better ending. Blue has really showed me that you should be nice to everyone and help people that are looking lonely or down, I really enjoyed Blue and would recommend it to everyone over the age of 12.

This week I read the last 60 pages of Blue. I was disappointed when I read the last page, not because I didn’t enjoy the ending or because overall I did not like the book, but because I had enjoyed the book so much and I felt disappointed that this story had came to an end. I had became so attached to many of the characters and I was very interest in the unfortunate Bullying journey Anna sadly had to go through. Although, many of my group members did not like the sudden ending, I actually did. The ending sort of leaves you wondering. Wondering what the fate of Anna Goldsmith is. It sort of means that you can let your mind wonder and make up your own ending. The way the book ended to me, meant the story of Anna was not finished. As if she still has a life to live. As if her life was not about to end just yet, because she still had many other opportunities ahead.
My favourite part was when Melanie ran to Hayley’s house and gave her the letter. Melanie was expecting Hayley to just shrug her shoulders and laugh at the letter Anna had wrote. However, she did not laugh or smirk, she just sat on her bed with a blank face, she almost appeared shocked. This was the first time Hayley had ever reacted in this way. She reacted stunned, she had taken this letter seriously, to her it was no joke. I think the author was trying to hint that the letter Anna had wrote was really saying something to Hayley. Almost as if Hayley had a sudden flashback and remembered all the mean jokes she had played on Anna and she had only now realised how rude and cruel they really were. Only now had she realised she was a bully, she had done cruel things to many innocent people. Only now had she realised that she was maybe even a “murderer”.

wow, this book was amazingly good. honestly at the start, when i received the book from the teacher i didn’t think it would be very good. For the first few weeks of me reading this book i struggled to keep concentrated because i didn’t really get into the book, but one night i was so bored and so i decided to read, i really got into the book. i loved it i started from the start and read all the way to the end. this book is magnificent, it really shows what people go through. this book was written in about 1988 or something, and since then bullying, as bad as that still occurs. although, now its mostly cyber bullying. nasty comments and aiming to get people depressed and disliked happens a lot i think. in this book i think it not only showed bullying, it also showed peer pressure. Hayley pretty much peer pressured girls , and even guys into bullying anna. i thought it was disgusting, and in the end anna ending up in hospital was just pathetic, Hayley needs to GET A LIFE!. i very much enjoyed the book, but i thought the ending wasn’t as good and interesting as it could have been , i think that they should make a second blue book, i would definetly read it 🙂 . i know some people have been bullied and it has always turned out fine but with others i know some people cant get through it, ive seen on the news about people dying from getting bashed (bullied) and others just committing, it makes me feel sick and just wish all bullying could just stop! , i recommend this book for everyone. this book is the best book i’ve ever read and i know it will be the same for everyone else 🙂 xx

I’m glad that everyone finally found out how bad Hayley was in the end and started to do something about it. In my opinion she needs a vistit from Taylor’s Lefty and Righty.
It’s a good book and i’d recommend it to everyone, however the ending lets it down, a lot.

I think that Hayley is a horrible cow and she must either be a complete b**** or just dumb and oblivious! I feel proud of Mel because she faced her fear of the school bully!! Anna was stupid for trying to take her own life but I can see why she was soo upset, If I were her I would have stood up to Hayley and told her how I felt and Never talked to her again, but that is me!! I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone……everyone would love this booooook!!!!!!!!!!!!! YYYYYYAAAAAAAYYYYY I AM SOO GLAD THAT ANNA IS OK!!

I read this book for Lit Circles, and all i can say is that it really is an eye opening book, and it was interesting, yet somehow kinda sickening to read it from the point of view of the person who’s being bullied, because some of the things that happen are a bit….eww…and the way Anna thinks is just a little bit weird. I was a bit let down by the ending though, and I think that the author should definitely have made a better ending for he book, that fits the story more. I’d recommend this to people who can sit down and read a book, no matter what happens inside it.

This book follows the life of Anna Goldsmith, who is a bullying victim. It reveals how she responds and reacts to when she is bullied and who is her true friend. Anna is seen as a threat to the popular girl, Hayley Parkin, because she is pretty, smart and talented. This book makes you want to keep on reading and it is hard to stop. I hope more people read it so that everybody knows how dangerous bullying can be.

I have a whole new view on bullying myself. it is a good book because it shows how horrible it is to be a bully or suffer from bullying. This book was fantastic i just didn’t enjoy the ending i think that it could have given us more depth on what happened to Anna when she went back to school and what happened in the future. 🙂

I am not a bully myself, but i know now that when I see someone being bullied, the best thing I can do is stick up for them and become friends with them. I think bullying is really terrible, and after reading about people cutting themselves and attempting suicide, I have a whole new perspective on it now. I think the book got a bit confronting at times, but I think it was like that to show how horrible being bullied is. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t fully understand the effects of bullying, and who can handle the confronting and horrible ways some people choose to deal with it. (:

When Anna, the new girl, starts at a new school she begins to become close friends with the popular girl in school Hayley Parkins. But little does Anna know Hayley is only pretending to be good friends. She is bullied and criticised and is so bad she feels vulnerable and tries to commit suicide.

Then my friend Laura said I should read Blue and I did. I was really glad that she told me to read it because it was such a good book and related to teenage crisis’. The book is all about a girl called Anna Goldsmith and her struggle with bullies when she joins a new school. First of all she has friends and even the most popular girl at school, Hayley, likes her. But one day they start playing cruel games and her whole life changes. The main characters in this book are Anna Goldsmith, Melanie and Hayley, the class bully. Anna is a complicated person; to her parents she is a popular and clever girl, who can stand up for herself. But in reality she is a quiet, lonely girl with a low self-esteem. The main point in this book is bullying and self harm. It talks about how bullying can affect someones life so much, that it haunts them for the rest of their lives. I really liked Blue, and I hope more books like this is made, they are such eye-openers!

At the end of the book i hoped Hayley felt really bad for what she did after getting the letter and that she deserved every bit of guilt in her. i was really glad that Anna didn’t die but was a bit disapointed in the ending of the book. It should have a least had Anna going back to school or her seeing Hayley. Although blue was very sad and depressing at times it was really good, detailed book and i liked it very much.

She has a healthy relationship with her family, (except the occasional fight with her mum, which is normal with every teenage girl) a best friend Hayley who she can tell all her secrets to and she is very smart, is going extremely well at school and her teachers adore her. Her life is great until her her best friend Hayley decides to bully Anna and sure enough, she gets the rest of the class to gang up on Anna. Anna doesn’t know what has changed in Hayey, but she tries to ignore her and not let it upset her. Anna becomes friends with Melanie, who is also friends with Hayley and does not stick up for Anna when Hayley bullies her. Anna decides that the only way to escape the blanket of hell that Hayley has smothered her with, is to take her own life. She knows it will be hard on her family, but in the letter that she wrote to Melanie before she attempted to kill herself, she said that she felt like her problems were too big and she was too small. This book is heart wrenching and it really helped me to understand how it feels to be bullied and humiliated to the point where you can’t bear to live any longer.

This made me aware of how much bullying destroys a person’s life at even young ages.

This book is about a girl whose name is Anna Goldsmith and enrols at a new school. She easily fits in at first but then her most trusted friend turns on her and turns her life into a depressing miserable place to be. The bullying goes on and on until Anna cannot take it any more and tries to take her life. Anna faces some tough times and is treated cruely. Anna can no longer take it, she doesn’t tell any one about her miserable life. And thats when she goes off the rails. Her mother finds out that Anna hasn’t been happy for a long time.

  71. What a book, i ended up loving this book from the start to the end. When i finished this book i wished there was a second book because i want to find out what happens with Hayley Parkin and Anna Goldsmith, the reason why is because i want to see what Hayley does and if or how Anna recovers. This book is really good as i have said before but it does show how much can happen to a teenager when they have been bullied or the are depressed. I think teenagers, if they are dangering themselves need to get help weather from their parents or a teacher they can trust because Anna Goldsmith could of died because of a bully bullying her throughout high school. This isn’t how teenagers should be having a life, they should be happy and having fun. I think Hayley Parkin was jealous of Anna Goldsmith because she was either being nice to her and inviting her over to her house or either being nasty towards her and treating her like a chid and a nobody. But over all this book was really good and I’m glad my friend picked this for me because i was away the day they picked the books and she picked Blue as my first choice which i am extremely glad about. I loved this book, i can’t get over about how much i actaully enjoyed it.
