The blog for books and movies

Australian teenager Ellie and six of her friends return from a winter break camping trip to find their homes burned or deserted, their families imprisoned, and their country occupied by a foreign military force in league with a band of disaffected Australians.

As their shock wears off, the seven decide they must stick together if they are to survive.

After a life-threatening skirmish with the occupiers, the teens retreat to their isolated campsite in the bush country and make plans to fight a guerilla war against the invaders.

  1. Tomorrow When The War Began is such a good series. I got the series for Christmas, and I can say I really enjoyed them. This is a type of series that you don’t want to put down, and can’t wait to find out what happens next. This whole series is action-packed, and there is not a single second that you are bored. This book would be good for people 12+, and I think it is a great read. I would rate it a 8/10.

It was a great series that followed the journey of seven teenagers who came back from there winter break and came home to see nothing. 3. Tomorrow When the War Began is a one-of-a-kind book. It begins rather normal, but if you read on, it turns into something else altogether. This book, true to the blurb, will make you ask yourself the hardest questions you will ever have to answer – would you fight? Would you want to be a hero and would you have the courage? Would you give up? Would you fight for everything you know, when your own life is only just beginning? This book will take you on a heart- warming, adrenaline-packed journey of war, love, life, friends and family! I loved this book so much and would definitely rate it a 10/10

  4. Tomorrow when the war began, where shell I start, there are so many things I love about this book. How it makes you full of so much adrenaline and love for each character. That it is so mysteries yet exiting, sharing it’s knowledge with every one of us. This is all about a group of friends who escape their busy lives and relax in the bush but boy, do things change when a full army has come to take their land and bad things are happening. This group do not cower though they become courageous and start taking back what is theirs! There are points in this series where I am criying my eyes out and other parts where I am laughing my head off, but this is such a great book and I would say that you would love it! I rate this a 9/10.

  5. Alongside Harry Potter, this is definitely one of my favourite book series out. I have just read the Tomorrow When the War Began Series for the second time now, and loved it just as much I did the first time.
This series is one that definitely relates well to a teenage audience, and being set in Australia makes it even more relatable. John Marsden is an exceptional writer definitely knows how to end a chapter and make it impossible to stop reading! The books are written from the view of Ellie, a teenage girl, fighting an invasion with her friends. The style is casual and easy to follow and John Marsden has written this book so you are really able to see what is happening and create a good visual.
I was hooked all the way through the seven books, and I was genuinely sad when they finished as it was a really thrilling series. The Ellie Chronicles are also really good, they follow on from the series, however I think that the book I enjoyed the most was the very first one in the series because you just don’t expect it to be that good!
    I would rate this series 9.5/10 🙂

I started to read this series because the movie came out but that was ages ago when I was in Grade 5. I started to read the series then but lost interest. This year I started reading it again. I have no idea why I stopped reading the series in the first place. John Marsden is an amazing reader. These books are packed full of adventure, romance and action. I love how Ellie and her friends think of those great ideas in protecting their hometown- Wirrawee, and their Family and Friends. I Would recommend this book and series to anyone how enjoys Action packed reads with a little bit of romance. I rate this book 10/10…… IT’S AMAZING!!!!

  7. I have finished reading tomorrow when the war began by John Marsden, I really enjoyed the book but I was shocked by the reality of the situation. I think that it was unfair to capture all the people on the fair day but I also think it was very smart to struck their invasion when everyone is clueless and in the same place on the same day. The teenagers all consider them selves the lucky ones because they were away when they invaded but they also think it was a sign from God to help the situation by fighting all the soldiers. My favourite part in the book was when they found ‘Hermit’s hut’ because it proved that he actually lived there. I really like the character Ellie because she is brave and fearless. I think this book is very well written and based on a true story. I can’t wait to continue with the other books in the series.

Tomorrow and the war began is a must read. Its one of those books that, if you don’t read, you haven’t lived! It such and emotional journey about a teenager called ‘Ellie’ in the town of ‘Wirrawee’.
Ellie, gathers up a group of close friends one day and organises for her and 7 of her friends to go to ‘Hell’, of course its just a remote area of bushland that the locals have called Hell’. Its all fun and games, and socialising as the teenagers enjoy there time away from there parents. But one night they see a large number of planes fly overhead, although they think little of it…But in a few days time they would discover, there whole world would change…
This book is a brilliant balance of romance and action. It keeps every reader that enters the world of Wirrawee on the edge of their seat and instantly hooked.
This is also the tale of Ellie who has to deal with her emotions and make decisions, I liked how it was written, that you could feel what Ellie felt and go on her journey as she straggles to come to terms with what is happening. Its amazing how much you get attached to these characters! The are constantly changing and growing and their bravery is simply astounding, I guarantee you will not put in down.
My favourite character has to be Fi, she is so funny, and pretty and she sounds like a great friend! She is a City girl who came to the Country to enjoy the trip with her friends, she is the one the i believe discovers her true self and progresses the most and fights her fears, head on.
I have read all the books and i have to admit it was one of my favourite series. I defiantly recommend this book to all action seeking teenagers! 10/10!

  11. This series of books were amazing!!!!! I loved and felt like I was living every part of it. It was brilliantly written to sound like it was a diary kept by Ellie, the main character. It was so full of drama, love and action that there was never a boring part. When the movie came out for the first book I was very excited that it lived up to my expectations. But I would recommend reading the book first, because then you know all the background information. I loved this series I would rate it 10/10.

  15. I recently finished reading ‘The tomorrow series’ by John Marsden. I absolutely loved the books and found them gripping and intense the whole way through. The series are based around a small group of teenageers from Australia. They are shocked, stunned and devostated when they come home from a camping trip and discover their country has been invaded. Together, they make the decision to fight back against the enemy side, using the bush as a major help. Every book in the series was amazing and as I read them I began to understand each character more and more. Throughout the series, courage, bravery, romance and determination are shown in the hardest of times. I would recommend these books to anyone in the age group of 12-17, but this could easily vary. I would rate the series a 10/10 🙂

The teens in this series show great leadership, bravery, courage and grow to be more mature as the books progress. I love how every character has their own personality. I especially admire Robin because she is brave, kind, courageous , loyal and does what she can to keep the others safe. I loved this book but it had some unnecessary things that i think could be removed but other than that 10/10!!!

  19. Tomorrow when the war began John Marsden- When i first read the book i fell in love with it straight away. I’ve been reading the series ever since i started the book. The book is filled with action-packed chapters and John Marsden even had time to put romance in there! I would recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a thrilled action-packed adventure. If i had to choose a character in this book to be i would choose Fi (Fiona). The blonde city girl. I would be Fi because her courage is amazing she’s smart, kind, pretty, considerate and is very courageous. Even though Fi doesn’t have a major part in the book i still admire all her qualities. My favourite part of the book is probably when they started their trip up Satan’s steps and into Hell. All the characters in this book inspire and i still can’t believe they’re standing strong with a shortage of food and water. They have all coped so well with it and they’ve coped especially well with losing friends and loved ones. How much courage they have is incredible and how they can fight back and take what’s rightfully theirs.

This is the second best series ever, after Harry Potter!
These books are simple amazing, the way John Marsden writes and describes events and people and feelings is phenomenal, it really is.
This book follows a war, through the eyes of teenage Ellie Linton and her friends.
Throughout the series, the group of teenagers is constantly changing, growing and becoming braver as they go. They accomplish many things such as blowing up bridges, petrol stations, infiltrating missions and become completely fearless on the breach of death. Together, they face numerous challenges and make daring decisions that don’t always turn out so well, but they always learn something from it.
As much as this is an action novel, it’s also a romance, as relationsships grow and blossom and each realises who they are most loyal to. They lose friends and gain friends, but through all they stick together, and make this amazing series what it is.

I have only read the first book but I couldn’t put it down it was fantastic. I saw the movie first and thought it was wonderful and then I read the book and thought it was just as good. I would recommend that if you would like to read and see the book/movie, then read the book first then watch the movie as I find it easier to read a book then see the movie.
The book is really well written and it gives you pretty good visuals. I do picture the characters as the actors as I saw the movie first.
I would recommend this book and I rate it 9.5/10

It is a story of when a group of friends go out on an overnight trip to ‘hell’. when they are there a war starts in their home town . when they return home there families are gone. This is a great book and the author is fabulous. You might have seen the movie, but you should read the book it is much better. This book is by John Masden. I would recomend it for people who are 8 -16 years old.

  25. I have only read the first book in the series, and (this sounds like something you get out of the back of the book) it was ‘an absolute must read’ and I couldn’t put it down! I sometimes ‘accidentally’ went over my bedtime because I just wanted to see what happened next!
My favourite character was Ellie, not because she was the main character, but because of her bravery and determination to keep going.
If I had the opportunity to change anything in the book, it would be to stick all the books together so that you wouldn’t have to go to your bookshelf when you finished one; you could just flip the page and start the next book!

I would recommend this book to the ages of 13+ as there is a lot of violence, and rate this book ☆☆☆☆☆ five stars out of five, for action & romance.

  28. Tomorrow When the War Began is a capturing and adventurous book full of trust, teamwork and strength. Tomorrow When the War Began illustrates the tough lives of seven brave and determined teenagers who didn’t realise they had landed themselves in the middle of the war until they arrive home from a joyful escape to discover their deserted and empty town.
Tomorrow When the War Began starts off as a story of adventure and a chance for some country teenagers to get away from their nagging parents and go on their last adventure before school begins.
Their worlds are soon flipped upside down when they come home to discover their town has been invaded and everyone is gone.
I absolutely loved this book!!!! It is one of the most well written and interesting books I have read in a long time.
As this book is based in Australia, I was able to relate to it more and for this reason I enjoyed it so much.
My favourite character is Ellie, she is so determined, strong and a great team leader. She is such a great friend and she is always there for her friends when they need her. I loved the chemistry between Lee and Ellie, they are so cute together and I hope their relationship evolves even more in the next book.
My favourite part of the book is just before they go on their trip to Hell and before the invasion begins. As I am not a farmer, it was interesting to read about life from a country girl’s perspective.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an adventurous and well written book. This book is aimed for teenagers as it involves some harsh concepts.
    Make sure you read it!!!

My favourite character is probably Lee or Fi. I find Lee very interesting and he has a different view about a lot of things to the others. Fi is quite funny and her town-life and ideas can prove quite comical at times.
My favourite part of the series are the times when they plan an attack on the enemy. These are the most interesting and intense parts of the books. The teamwork and creativity they show is amazing and can be quite inspirational.
The main thing I dislike about the book is that it can be quite wordy in places. I feel there are some things in the book that are not necessary and can be cut out.
I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 12 and rate it 7/10. If you read the series you do have to start at the beginning though.

When you are just about to finish reading a chapter John Marsden will write something that makes you keep going, just to find out what happens next. Just when you think everything is calm something big will happen, except I think that’s what makes it so good. I really like the fact that this series is set in Australia. I can relate well to the bush scenes as I know what they are like.
I am blown away by what John Marsden has written. He puts in so much detail about how Elle feels and includes plenty of detail about their plans to help save their country. When he writes about their attacks you can tell he knows what he is talking about.

If you don’t read it you’re missing out on ALOT! John Marsden really takes you do a different world. Before reading the Tomorrow series, I had only read one other book by this amazing author that didn’t appeal nearly as much to me as the Tomorrow series has. My favourite character is Homer. What’s not to like about this hero? He’s a funny, careless guy who doesn’t care about what anybody else thinks, except the girls of course. Homer’s a strong, warm hearted person and is always looking out for his friends. There are 7 of these gripping books that you must read and what’s better you can even watch the movie too! It is such a great book with mysteries and secrets. It is all about how a group of teenagers go away to a place they call hell and come back to find their country in ruin and parents and families locked up and being kept captive by a foreign army force.

Ellie is my favourite character, who is one of the teenagers. She is fiery and ready for a fight. She is not scared to go in full force to fight the enemy and get her family back. She is full of surprises and while trying to save her family and friends gets to know her true self. I like that she has a go at everything and is not willing to give up without a fight.

There are 7 books in the series and you have to read them in order to really get the concept of the story. Anyone of all ages who loves reading with thoroughly enjoy this book. It is fantastically written and I cant wait to finish the series and find out what happens, yet I don’t want them to end!

Ellie is a 17 year old girl who decides to go camping in the bush with several of her friends. All goes well until they make their way home from the trip-they find that their small home town has been invaded.
Together, the friends work to take down the inveders and result in many shocking and amusing twists to the story.

I really enjoyed the series and i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys action, romance, drama and fiction all in one!

They venture down there as a group, on the night’s planes without lights would fly over the group would wonder, why are the light’s off? When the group went back, the country had been invaded, where were their parents, and what would happen to all their beloved family members? Go on the journey as they make a home at ‘hell’ and fight the many soldiers, in order to restore their town.

  56. I read these books ages ago, but still remember the moment Ellie and her friends found themselves in the midst of a war. Ellie and her friends are alone in a country where there families have been captured, and they must fight to survive. Ellie and her friends are forced to go into hiding, where they live each day in fear of not being free the next. Everyone should read this book!

  57. heyy..I love books, read them all the time, and i’d have to say that ‘The Tomorrow Series” by John Marsden is one of the best series I’ve ever read. Even, maybe, better then Harry Potter and Twilight. Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter and Twilight to, but i think ‘The Tomorrow series’ takes the cake. Give it a go, and read ‘The Ellie Chronicles’ afterwards if you like.

  58. Last year i read the book Tomorrow when the war began by James Marsden. The book is about a group of teenagers that go on a camping trip by themselves for the weekend and when they come back they find that the entire town is in captivity. This book is part of a series and the main character Ellie is a really well thought out character, i love the way that the author has added suspense all the way along, it really keeps you hanging all the way to the end, so that you want to read on! i would rate this 9 out of en. i recommend it to anyone that like war and adventure books,
